price is currently showing at $699.88 w/ free shipping
Canon XSI

after you go through MSN live cash back , you'll receive an extra 15% CashBack in your account, which brings the total down to (699.88 x .85) = $594.90

This is the lowest I've seen for this camera so far.
Just recently ordered the acer aspire one from JR.com and shipping was fast.

*UPdate*
sept 03, CashBack from msn live now is reduced to 6%, congrats to those that got in earlier!!

Super slick, I bought it from JR a week ago with 12% CashBack.

i hope this pricing stays or goes further down (along w/ the extra CashBack). I'll need to order this kit 2 weeks from now.

Not a bad deal at all now that it's under $600

Hi, I am a DSLR newb. What's the major difference between this XSI and 40D? Is it worth a few more hundred bucks to get a 40D if it's much better? Thanks in advance.

40D is better, definitely. But not that much better.

And the 40D is a lot bigger and heavier. Some people like that. I don't.

Picture quality between them will be virtually identical, as will focusing performance. The 40D has:

Bigger, better viewfinder
Higher FPS with a bigger buffer
Top LCD
Slightly higher shutter sync

That's about it. Personally, I'd take the XSi over the 40D if they were the same price just because of the ergonomics. I guess I have relatively small hands and like a lightweight camera.

The XSi with the new 18-200mm IS lens would be a *bitchin* "everyday, everywhere" kinda setup.

Thanks for you informative answer.
So this kit comes with the standard (non-IS) lens? How much does the IS lens cost? Thanks a lot

OK - I own them both, as well as a 1d Mark 2 and 1ds. I use these cameras a lot and while I agree with this post concerning the "differences", there is no way the focusing performance of any Rebel class camera compares to that of the 40d. Focusing with the 40d is every bit as good as the 1d Mark 2 in MOST circumstances.

That said, I couldn't agree more that the new 18-200mm IS will be a great addition to the ef-s lens line!

How long the MS Live Cash Back take? Anybody had experience with it?

I'm a newbie too when it comes to dslr.

I've got this camera on my list and will be purchasing a dslr soon.

I wanted to get everybody's advice on this camera against the Nikon d60 and Olympus E-520.

I want the camera to take nice shots without really having to play too much with the settings. I really don't anticipate buying anymore lenses then the one that comes with the camera. My budget is about $700-$900.

Please give your thoughts as to which one you think is better for my purposes.

TIA.

GMaxx

thats almost as cheap as i paid...the best i ever did was 519.00 for the kit.

If you want to call a $750 lens which does not even have USM a 'great addition'. Sorry...but Canon dropped the ball on this one.

from purchase date to available date is 60 days, after that you can choose to cash out by either have it sent to paypal or have them send you a check.

here's the live CashBack FAQ

that's an incredible deal, eBay CashBack i assume?

how do you like the camera for everyday shooting? ease of use, comfort grip? (im intending to buy this as a gift my gf, and she's very new to this dslr realm)

From what I'm told, the AF systems in the 450D and 40D are virtually identical, representing a big upgrade in AF performance for the Rebel line.

I might be wrong though.

MSRP of $699, which is $40 over the current MSRP and $50-$60 over the current street price of the non-USM Nikon 18-200mm VR.

Which means street price after the initial frenzy will be the same as the Nikon version.

I too wish it had USM, but that would make for a much more expensive lens. And a bigger and heavier lens.

I have XSI and 20D. XSI isn't as good as 20D although it has much higher Megapixel. Especially for portrait, 20D is way better. 50D (replacement of 40D) is coming, body only is only $1200. I got XSI from live.com CashBack, it was $581 for body only without tax.

The 50D is not a 40D replacement. It's a complement. They will both continue to be produced by Canon.

Out of curiosity, what about the 20D makes it better for portraits?

Here's a good comparison by a reputable guy...Bob Atkins Comparison

I own both.

I prefer the XSi because it's much more portable.

you're better off getting an Xsi and spending the couple hundred on a lens unless there's something you NEED on the 40D only.

Thanks all for your suggestion. I think I will go with the XSI. Can you recommend some good lenses to go along? Thanks.

zhutou said: Thanks all for your suggestion. I think I will go with the XSI. Can you recommend some good lenses to go along? Thanks.

Before anyone make any suggestion, can you tell us what type of photos you are planning to take? (like sports, portrait, structures, macros ...) And how much you would like to spend on lenses?

basically protrait, landscape for travelling. Macros will be nice, too, but not a must at this moment.
If there is a good walk-around lens that I can buy and won't cost more than this kit, it will be great.Thanks.

Followed the link "MSN live CashBack". Placed an order for XSi in J&R. Haven't seen any CashBack e-mail from MSN yet. Do I need to have hotmail account. I am using gmail account.

Does this lens has Image Stabilizer ?

^-- lolcat

zhutou said: Thanks all for your suggestion. I think I will go with the XSI. Can you recommend some good lenses to go along? Thanks.

The kit lens is excellent. It has IS.

The EF-S 55-250mm IS lens is an excellent, inexpensive ($260 or so) telephoto lens to supplement the telephoto end.

The EF 50mm F/1.8 II is another great lens. It's under $100, and it's an excellent performer. It's on my Rebel 90% of the time, even though I own the 18-55mm IS and 55-250mm IS. I love the large aperture.

It can haz image stabilizer!

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8

Its image quality rivals some of the Canon L lenses and it is only $400.

what's the 18-200mm IS lens people are all talking about? I searched and only found one Tamron one which costs about $700. Is that the one you guys are talking about?

It's brand new. Just announced. Not on the market yet. Not sure how good the IQ is, but given the outstanding quality of the new 18-55mm IS and 55-250mm IS lenses, it is assumed that it will be excellent as well.

Anyone know if the Xsi can handle new 30mb/sec Extreme III cards? So far I heard only the D90 can support 30mb/sec.

To each his own, I guess. Canon will sell many thousands of them.

It doesn't take CF cards, only SD/SDHC.

LOL. Thanks, but I was talking about this: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-9314-9578

40D has ISO3200 and higher pixel density over XSi resulting in better low light performance.
But the price of 40D is very close to Nikon D90 with seems like a better camera.
I shoot with XTi and Olympus E520, I like the Oly for its better handling and in body stablization and availblity for highy quality, reasonability priced Zuiko lenses like 14-54mm F2.8/2.5 which is every good as $1000 Canon EF 24-104 F4L IS.
