Was $123.49 delivered at Buy.com last week. |
Might be hot. Question is: is that one of the many factory recertified drives that are out there and have a shortened warranty? I don't trust ZZF's description, and don't want to rely on their "customer service". |
i just got my Buy.com green 1TB drive with cables and lame backup software from Buy.com; brand new; 3yr warranty. these are great for external enclosures (D2D2D backups) since they don't generate much heat; 5400rpm is perfect for usb 2.0 you should consider ESATA if you need to do multiple external drives as usb 2.0 is terrible with contention on most mobo's (ie copying from usb to usb drive). esp if you get a nice 7200rpm. but honestly for NAS or d2d2d 5400rpm is quite nice. less heat. probably last longer. |

They should specify on the webpage that WD10EACS is one of those green storage drives, not quite appropriate for use as a primary hard drive (it's fine for most as a secondary internal). They also have it listed as 7200 RPM, but as far I've heard everyone has received 5400 RPM and no one has ever reported receiving one that is 7200 RPM. |
Seagate 1TB is avail for 139$ if you need speed. 32MB cache and 7200RPM |

I disagree. It can be appropriate as a primary drive. While the performance isn't stellar it's not as slow as the 5400RPM drives of the past. For browsing the web and doing office work the difference in speed won't be noticeable. And isn't that what most people do? |
If i need it for MPC will it be sufficient. |

These green drives are suppose to be replacing primary drives. However, if you are buying 2 or more for a RAID setup you should not use these and buy their Enterprise one otherwise I hope you have a backup of your data... |

I was doing some research on using these in a RAID array and found a utility called WDTLER.EXE that can change the TLER to 7 seconds so it can be used in a RAID array, just like the enterprise version. |
