This lens is the king in its class. Most places sell this at $1799 and is often on back order. The used lens is selling much higher on eBay. You can get a brand new one for $1426 after MSN live CashBack.
Go here first to get 12.5% live Cash Back at etonics:
Search completed listing on eBay, you will find that the used one is selling at around $1500. It is rare that you can get an used one for 1K.

This is a must for the Nikon / Fuji pro cameras.
Then if I were you id be buying them and making 500 buck profits off them. Where ever you saw this lens SELL for 1k that means the seller needed the cash in a hurry or it was stolen.
I have this lens and its a brute on long shooting days with the batt grip also. Buy it if you have the money!

So sorry about the pricing. I was looking at Nikon 80-400mm. Yeah this price is great deal after all.

I can't justify the price for my needs. But I also wonder if buying VR lenses is the way to go. My guess is that eventually Nikon is going to move the VR mechanism into the camera body like Pentax et al. It seems to have the same benefits, should be less expensive, and the complex machinery is in just one item instead on many.

But apparently they and Canon have customer base loyal enough to continue selling VR lenses like hotcakes and making good $$$ on them.
If I were betting on future technologies, I'd say that VR in still photography will become unnecessary in a few years. The latest cameras already shoot at 3200 ISO virtually without any noise. Long shutter speeds will be soon a thing of the past along with the need for vibration compensation technology.

Great price on a brand new one. I have seen used ones sell for more. Have it and love it, green all the way for the OP. Now if someone could find a Nikon D90 with 10% or more CB at live.com I would be in heaven

Funny that you comment on it being a brute... after borrowing a friend's lens, I decided to keep my old 80-200 f2.8d. I have the version just before they added the tripod mount. While no VR, the reduced weight makes it a bit easier to carry and handhold...

In the body you can't see the stabilized image through the optical viewfinder.
Dang... i might just want to buy it. I might have to sell my 80-200 f/2.8 NIkon, 80-200f/2.8 Tokina ATX-pro and the 18-200 VR ... to fund this baby.

Who makes this wunder camera that you refer to?
NIKON! With their D3 and D700 you can shot @3200 and have virtually no noise. In low light@3200 it still has a VERY small amount of noise in the deep blacks but compared to films graininess or digitals like Nikons D2x or Canons offerings it is virtually noise free. I know this for a fact as I shoot with a D3 daily. Check out some of the Olympics pics of the sports shooters. Used to be mostly White lenses or Canons. Now it is about 50-50 Canon-Nikon and that is in less than a year. The original quote is a little miss worded. It should say, "The latest cameras already shoot at 3200 ISO without virtually any noise". It is not 3200 virtually but actually!

I've read several reviews saying that in-body VR doesn't do as good a job because of the location of the parts that are moving. +1 recommendation for the lens, it's an amazing and versatile lens.

Treat it as free leasing. Used it for a few years. You can re-sell it about the same money or at most $200 less.
I have collected $3000 worth of lenses based on this theory and I have never sold any.

Is it because you like all those lenses or just procrastinating? I am not trying to judge you. Just trying to understand the reason behind not selling unused stuff.

Be careful with CashBack from Etronics. I purchased a Sony product last month and the CashBack showed up in my account within a couple of days but Etronics notified MSN Live that the product was returned or refunded and they (prior to my receiving the initial shipment) removed the CashBack award from my account. I emailed MSN with the UPS tracking number plus my initial purchase order and convinced them that Etronics was misrepresenting the facts and they reinstated the CashBack award but upon investigating with Etronics they were told that they paid another CashBack service so I never received the initial CashBack to my account and decided that Etronics could not be trusted to deal with.
I regularly recycle my lens through craigslist. I do not trust eBay for expensive items.

If you're going to shoot FX format, I wouldn't sell the 80-200 Nikkor because the 70-200 one is much softer on edges in FX and 35 mm. VR is very useful feature for this kind of zooms, though, so I would keep both.
Anyone get a MS notice email for CashBack on an order placed from Etronics? How long did it take? I placed an order Friday and have not received an email yet. I placed an order with OfficeMax this morning via live CashBack link and have already received a notice from MS to finish my CashBack transaction...

I placed a Nikon 70-200mm AFS VR order with etronics and my account shows the cashback after 10 minutes. I paid with AMEX, not Paypal. The cashback sometimes is slow, I purchased an Ebay item last month and the cashback does not show up after 2 days.
Darn, I paid with AMEX via Paypal! =) I'll hope it goes through soon... not a great deal without the $200 discount...

This is my all time favorite piece of glass! I have used it for everything from covering pro basketball to weddings and chasing my little niece.
Back in June I spoke with a longtime Nikon rep and he mentioned that it takes about 18 months to create the lens including cooling time. The reason it was tough to find for awhile is that they were not prepared for such demand. Many pro Canon sports shooters switched from their gear to Nikon before the Olympics. I am not a Canon shooter so I am not familiar with a specific problem that their top of the line camera body was having, but heard about it at recent workshop I attended.

Great lens. If you need it, you'll know already. If you'll just want it, well, it's a different story.
For DX shooting (due to soft edges on FX mentioned before), it is the unqualified king in its category. For most people though, the 18-200dx will suffice. Coming from an addict; you really need both...

I have 17-40 F4/L, then I got 24-105 F4/L IS, I thought I will sell 17-40, but kept as I like it very much.
I have 70-200F4/L, 17-40 F4/L, 24-105F4/L, 50 F/1.4 and 100mm macro. I don't want to sell any of these as the copies that I have are very sharp.
