Since when is a handbag a necessity? Shouldn't charities deal with necessary items? Why not give a homeless person some food instead?

Charities aren't limited to homeless people. What about the ones that help battered women restart lives and get jobs? They might need a handbag to complete an interview outfit.

One charity that helps vulnerable women get started or re-started in the work world is "Dress for Success", which fits them with an interview outfit, purse, pantyhose, shoes, jewelry so they can make a good first impression. They have frequent donation days and, at least in my state, there is a big dry cleaning chain which accepts donations for them at all times.

Some charity organization has a shop (i.e. Goodwill) They love to take those items and sell them at their shops. After that, they can use the money to do what they need to do. And yes, often that you will find brand new items there with good price. For example. an $1.99 items may sell for $7.99 or more over there. In that case, the charity organization may have more cash(minus the expenses) to help others.

As long as we're going slightly off topic, just heard on the radio today that the Salvation Army has set up a coffee shop (similar to a Starbucks in concept) where they give some "dignity" to those who haven't had much lately. Free coffee & snacks in a coffee shop environment. What a nice idea. Dignity is hard to come by when you're down & nearly out! Hooray Salvation Army!
I think a cute, little, donated purse is a perfect, thoughtful thing...
Good for you, Rameez786.

dead? or is site just swamped or are they currently fixing it? sometimes i get the "We are temporarily out of items in this category", and sometimes many pages of items will show up. not sure what's going on. have tried both ff3 and ie6. haven't tried chrome yet kuz i haven't installed that on this comp.
They sold all these in the B+M for 75-90% off a month ago. They totally cleared out the section in the stores around here. It was probably posted in the clearance thread, I know it was on other sites.
Edit to add they are all still showing as 75% off in the OP link for me.

Also... donating these items to a thrift store means it would be resold and the charity gets the proceeds.
