i really like the network features on the latest generation of brother multifunctions, but too bad this one has no duplex printing.
What do you like about the networking features? I know that this model has Ethernet built in. Is it just that it hooks up to a network directly?
Also, they do offer a model that has duplexing and wireless for $699. It doesn't have a rebate available apparently.
I bought the MFC 8820D (D for duplexing) about five years ago and have been very happy with it. I've probably used the duplex feature about three times.
i got my mom the 8660DN a few months ago. the cool networking features go beyond just printing over your LAN. it can scan a stack of documents and email the PDF to you or upload to a FTP server. this is way more useful among wired folks than faxing nowdays.
you can set up remote printing to it so I can print to my mom's printer at her house from my house or anywhere on the internet. this is soooo much easier than getting on the phone with her and, for example, talking her through surfing the IRS website to find a form and then all the steps to download, open and print it.
there are more network features, but those are the ones I set up and use the most.
I bought this for the office a month ago from CDW (have the same pricing and rebate). Love it, a little loud at start up but the quality and speed is great. And the even bigger plus is that it comes with full capacity toner cartridges. Some of the others only come with starter cartridges.
Is it loud when you turn the machine on, or is it loud on the first page out?
OD guy said that have had few returns with this unit. It is heavy and built like a tank. I had to un-box it and cram it into my trunk. It seems to be worth the heavy lifting. I am looking forward to trying the network and PDF capabilities. I also saw HL-4040CN Color Laser for 199 after $200 MIR (50% off). I am sure that was mentioned in another post. I ended up going with the 9440 because I needed a sheet fed scanner.
