Best to read the reviews before buying one of these, imho.
Judging from customer reviews, it appears that any individual drive is either excellent or dog hockey. About 20% of the ~80 reviews indicate problems, with a significant number being DOA or infant mortality.
It *is* an attractive price, and anyone with the guts to buy and hope for a good one might do well. But I wouldn't want to deal with warranty replacement (plus paying the shipping to have their problem fixed!), and get a probably refurb drive back.
My personal impression is that the quality of all IBM / Deskstar / Travelstar drives went significantly down when Hitachi bought the line. When a customer says "What's this SMART error thing?" the drive's usually Hitachi.

I've never heard of a company doing an RMA then replacing the item with a brand-new part, they've always replaced with remanned stock. This holds true for hard-drives, video cards, laptop parts, motherboards, etc...

I just had a PNY 8600GT video card replaced via RMA. PNY sent me a brand new video card, shrink wrapped. It was definitely not a refurb.

It was definitely not a refurb.I just got back a PNY 7900GS yesterday and it was definitely a refurbished card. The packing list said as much. Just depends on what they have in stock. Usually refurbished parts if availalbe, and that depends on the number of returned parts that are fixable. If the product returns are mostly not fixable, then they'll need more new products to replace them with.

If you consider the logic, wouldn't the drive you send in, when repaired, become a refurbished drive if it was then sent back to you anyway? They are doing you a favor when you receive the replacement when you don't have to wait for the actual drive to be repaired...
