maybe I am bit off topic --- but I'd rather go out and buy $75 worth of canned goods on sale and keep my shelves stocked --- I know canned goods expire sooner (but you can donate them in annual food drives) my biggest problem is keeping a supply of beer around in case of an emergency --- no matter how much I buy to put in reserve --- it always seems to disappear ...

Shelf life is far less (two to three years), but it's so cheap (10 cents a meal or less in quantity), you can either use it and restock as you use, or rotate it out every couple of years with new stock. Can be eaten uncooked/dry in an emergency. The little flavor packets can be used to season almost anything, and have high sodium content, which is useful. $30 gets you about 300 meals. Not nutritious, but it has usable energy calories that would keep you alive and functioning for an extended period when no other food was available.
Add a small quantity of cheap, canned tuna (five year shelf life), spam (100,000 year shelf life ), some bottled water, and a bottle of multi-vitamins...you're good to go! your not only good to go --- but you have the diet of the average college kid in Hawaii |

Well that argument would be convincing if it wasn't for the fact that if you are in the situation that you need the emergency food its not like you have something better to do in those saved 25 minutes. After your done eating your MRE and laughing you will be sitting doing nothing in the dark while the other guy at least has a fire. So according to your logic if I get MREs instead of this food I need to cook I'm going to be unable to start a fire? o.O |

You said you were laughing at the guy starting a fire and eating his meal. Why would you laugh if your just going to eat your meal then start a fire? How did you save any time and what is the point of saving time when there is nothing to do? I thought the whole point you thought you were superior (and thus laughing) at the next person is because you didn't have to start a fire. Thus my comment. |

Use your imagination folks! You can heat rocks and drop that into water to boil it. Don't taste good, but also:
1. Find metal container suitable for edible things. (Gas cans are maybe bad to use.) 2. Place in or next to fire you've made. (See 'combustibles' and 'ignition sources'.)
Sheesh. No wonder they riot in cities, they evidently don't have a bic/match/high current electric source (car battery)/survival match/high friction heat generator and some wood/paper/charcoal/cardboard/petrochemicals...
Yeah and how convenient is that?
Starting a fire/wasting precious battery power. Many people may be in a bunker/basement/safe room, you think they really want to be starting a fire twice a day?
While you're out spending the 30 minutes to start your fire and cook your Where to start? 1. Fire=entertainment (sit around one, watch it, throw in stuff), warmth, and light. It's kinda a favorite tool of humans. 2. A battery was only one example of a fire starting tool. I have many sealed lead acid batteries, a few car batts, and a couple of solar cells. 3. I'll be laughing when you WON'T need the paper in that MRE. Ever wonder why they give you just a little teeny pack? |

The point is that he is forced to start a fire to eat this food no matter what, in emergency scenarios you want the simplest means of survival.
You won't always have the time/capability to be sitting around killing time around a fire in emergency situations. I don't see how you think MREs (that require nothing to eat) are inferior to food you must have water, fire (and as a result fuel for the fire, proper air circulation, and the work/tools to start a fire). Thus my comment. |

1. Fire=entertainment (sit around one, watch it, throw in stuff), warmth, and light. It's kinda a favorite tool of humans. So..you think people with food that doesn't force them to start a fire are unable to start one? If they have the time and desire they can start a fire if they wanted..if they don't have the time and desire they don't have to. This as opposed to you, where you are forced to start a fire no matter what. 2. A battery was only one example of a fire starting tool. I have many sealed lead acid batteries, a few car batts, and a couple of solar cells.
More tools, more factors that must be needed just for you to eat. What if you are on the run and can only carry what you can hold? You gonna drag along you car batteries, solar cells, and portable stove? When you're in emergency survival mode you want the simplest solution possible. |
