Why build a fire? You can set your house on fire with an open fire and its not needed. Long ago, when I was in college, bought something along the lines of this to use where standard grills were not allowed, and they work. Solar cooking anyone? This should take a few minutes to obtain the components for and build, you can even buy the kit cheaply if you cannot find the few parts they actually ship you. This will heat ANY kind of food, rendering it more edible, as long as you can get some sun. They really do NOT take all that much sun to work as they concentrate the sun into one spot to heat. (Think setting a piece of paper on fire with the sun using a magnifying glass.) As for the Costco bucket, no thanks, will opt for the freeze-dried stuff myself. Lasts forever and actually can taste pretty dayum good, especially warmed up. |

Food I wish I could send this to flood victims in India ... much better than Maggi(similar to Ramen noodles) being distributed there. |

What if it's a nuclear winter In that case, you are so screwed no matter what you do, so have your snow skis ready, (yes, even in Phoenix or Miami) and go skiing, enjoying yourself knowing that you will die rather quickly. Haven't done a search yet, but maybe you can get a "deal" on a "suicide kit", unless you prefer to become a "human ice cube" from the next "Ice Age." On second thought, in the case of a "true" nuclear winter (war), at least if your turn cannibal, your food will already be irradiated for you! |

Apparently the "meals" only break down to 455 calories per day including only 18 grams of protein

How about a lawsuit about this product? http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:Qfm4RzX7XvYJ:soundpolitics.com/PopeCostcoLawsuit.pdf%2BCostco%2BSurvival%2BFood%2B#104893&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1 Good find! From the lawsuit:
"12. If the contents of a bucket of Costco “Emergency Food Supply – Three month food supply for one person” are consumed at 3 servings per day over a 91-2/3 day period as directed, a person would receive average daily nutrition of 455 calories, with 18 grams of protein. 13. The recommendations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for minimum nourishment to sustain adult human life are for 2,000 daily calories, with 50 grams of protein. 14. To put things in perspective, the Nazis provided concentration camp inmates at Auschwitz with a diet of 1,300 calories per day for light work prisoners and 1,700 calories for hard labor. The average prisoner at Auschwitz died of starvation within three months on this diet. Of the many millions murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz, probably just as many died from the effects of starvation as perished in the infamous gas chambers. Costco’s “Emergency Food Supply – Three month food supply for one person” would therefore provide approximately one- third the daily caloric intake of the starvation diet that the Nazis imposed at Auschwitz. 15. Consumption of the 455 calories Costco “Emergency Food Supply – Three month food supply for one person” diet would result in extremely rapid weight loss, starvation, and death. A pound of fat in the human body is roughly equivalent to 4,000 calories. A pound of muscle is roughly equivalent to 1,800 calories. These are the dry weight caloric values of human tissue, while the human body consists of over 60% water. Someone consuming this Costco diet would probably lose at least one pound per day on average, with weight loss being slower at first when fat was burned, and faster towards the end as muscle tissue was consumed in the final stages of starvation. It would be unlikely for anyone to survive for three months of one bucket of Costco’s product, and impossible for anyone to survive for one year on four buckets of this." Maybe Costco, et. al. should be selling this as a weight loss diet pack? |

Why pitch a fire every time you want to eat? Just have your producer or camera man give you flint to start the fire. It's really easy on Man vs. Wild.

I knew I saved that old 12 foot aluminum mesh satellite dish for something... cover it with aluminum foil, point it the right direction, and it should be a tool-time style cooker - BZZZ - done! *L* |

Not for those who crave meat. Otherwise, fine deal. Seems cheaper than MRE's. Appears to be a dietary supplement for individuals who resort to cannibalism. |

Interesting Lawsuit...couldnt they just change the wording from 3 month supply to 1 month That would "increase" the calories to around 1500 per day and and a pamphlet that states you may have to increase servings if your dietary needs differ.... |

This would not work in Galveston,TX, there is no water there !!! For this to be of any value in an emergency it needs 100% of what you need to survive "INSIDE" this bucket, no extra ingredients needed What no chain and padlock, were do you think a 23lb bucket will get tossed to in a Hurricane, this puppy could end up a few miles from your house after a 'Cane |
