This has been the lowest price this unit has been at AFAIK. The Samsung 50" 720p counterpart has nothing on this. At this price this unit cannot be beat. I was at BB and looking the three 50" Panasonic plasmas they had on display it was hard to discern the differences between the 850u (~$2000), 800u (~$1600), and the 80u ($~1000).

I have the older 50PX75U and it is amazing! This one is even better for contrast/blacks/24p!

I paid around $1500 when I bought mine just this past March or April. I would jump at this in a heartbeat if I needed another (or if the wife would give permission )

Awesome find OP - sux we dont have Frys close to me though

This unit is $1099 @ Sears B&M. You can use 10% Clearance/Open box Electronics cpn, get another 10% off using Sears card or 24 months no interest.

The picture quality is excellent, tempting to buy one.

The final price will be cheaper than the OP's.

Do you have the full scan of the paper ad rather than the cut-out?

i'm headed to my local Sears tomorrow to check this out.

i printed that 10% off coupon linked here. (thanks)

so with that 10% off coupon and if i put this thing on a Sears card for another 10% off -

am i correct in interperting that if i do see the TV there for $1099, i'm lookign to get 20% off the $1099 price makign this tv $881?

that seems to good to be true but it's worth the trip there to try for that price.

has anyone already tried that with success?

I called Sears. They will only apply 10% Sears card coupon. Other coupon is only for clearance items. Also they mentioned that they will use only one coupon. . So 1099 -10% discount i.e. 990.

BEWARE RED TAPE PROBLEM WITH PANASONIC TH50PX80U!
I had a bad experience with it and just returned 50" plasma to Sears 2 weeks after I bought. Suddenly a red tape line came up from the top of the tv screen all the way bottom and effected every input. I called Panasonic support and they confirmed that tv needs repair probably an PDP (plasma display panel) replacement. Since I bought it brand new from Sears I returned it back and got the full credit within first 30 days.
After a search online I found that this might be a common issue with Panasonics and probably the reason they are being offered cheap!
Here is the link to photos from my tv and and other complaints I found;

No, the reason it's cheap is the new models are out and they are clearing these older ones out. I've owned 3 different Panasonic plasma's and this is the first I have seen the Red Tape problem, none on any of my sets though. Maybe a bad batch or something.

thanks for checking that out with Sears hereforadeal.
i didn't have time to go there over the weekend (sick child) and try that.

20% off seemed too good to be true - but then again you never know until you try and deals like that are why we are constantly checking fatwallet

i'm going to give it a few weeks to see if the price drops on this model any more.
i don't know when the "model year" ends on these things but seems like we are getting close to it.
the current $1199 Sears price says 'until 9/13/08' so it'l be interesting to see if it goes up/down after that...

and will keep watchign to see what Fry's lists it for.....

I'm having hard time dealing with ~Fears.

1) Visited their store. They were ready to price match but refused to give 10% discount via their card. Manager said, it only applies for ~Fears marked price.
2) Called their .com CSR number. They refused to match the Frys price as there is no Frys in my area.

What are your experiences?

You need to improve your research skills. That posting from AVS forum is over 2 years old, for a 4-year old model, and looks NOTHING like the problem you had.

These are still current model year -- price is going down due to the over-hype of 1080p. The 720p models still being made in the current model year are moving slower, so prices have dropped to move 'em out. This may be the last year that any of the major makers offer plasma in 720p resolution.

IMHO if u r sitting more than 7'-8' away from a 50" panel, you will probably not see ANY difference between 720p and 1080p (all else the same). The Panny panels are the best bang for the buck right now.

I think you were getting a bargain with the offer to price match if there are no Fry's in your local. Have you read their price match policy?

This just in: Panasonic reliability not 100% - and neither is any other manufacturer.

For the record, we had a Samsung Plasma panel go bad within the first month. It happens to ALL the manufacturers. The difference is how OFTEN it happens, and how WELL they take care of you. We've never had a stitch of trouble with any of our three Panny Plasmas nor our ancient 1st gen Fujitsu Plasma (that still works, going on 10 years).

well, I didnot say they were the exact same model or same problem, I said similar. There was 3 people in the same forum complaininng about red lines and bad plasma panel. postings might be old but technology is still same with these tvs. You can believe what you want to believe but I wont pay over $1000 for a tv that would require major service in the 2nd week of usage. You would call it bad luck, I will call it poor design, poor quality control by panasonic. did you know that Panasonic asks $500 for 3 years of extra warranty for this plasmas. isnt that too much 50% premium for a 1000$ tv? they are aware of risks in this tvs.
I own 2 cheap lcd panels (40" Proview and a 32" westinghouse) for last 3 years and did not have any issue. I am not saying they are better or worse but at least they are more reliable up to now..
