NEW YORK, Sept 05, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Wixi, Inc. ( http://www.wixi.com), a Web-based desktop where users interact with each other by privately sharing media content, including photos, audio and video, announced today the launch of its public Beta. The Web site, in private Beta for twelve months, offers users the ability to build an online media center that they can access any time, anywhere, and from any device without installing any application.

"Wixi has seen a tremendous amount of growth during our private beta phase," says Arthur Madrid, CEO of Wixi, Inc. "The main feedback we've received from our users is that Wixi offers a unique experience combining an online media storage service with a social network. People say they use their Wixi as an iTunes online. We now look forward to bringing our service to the masses and to our next levels of success."
Since the network's launch at TechCrunch40 in September 2007, Wixi has grown to a membership of more than 200,000 Beta testers worldwide, hosting more than 1,000,000 files. Wixi continues to expand its offerings daily, improving upon its user interface and features to manage thousands of media "in the cloud."
Among the features added since its launch:

-- New design make the navigation easier to manage large amount of
personal files/folders inside the Wixi online desktop.

-- YouTube channel & Bookmarklet: to add any YouTube video directly to
Wixi

-- Restrictions rules: to only add media inside the Wixi network when
users are friends.

-- iPhone version on http://iphone.wixi.com (15,000 streams per day)

-- New Wixi universal player that offers Web semantic suggestions for
media playing.

Web users who register within 1 month of the launch will enjoy the benefits of unlimited file storage for free. Beginning in October, new members will enjoy 3 GB of media storage on the network for free, or opt for Wixi's premium service, which will allow unlimited file storage for $4.99 per month and $50 per year.

you can't delete your own files if not done within 60 days?

Interesting from what I've seen so far. It's basically on web-based desktop where you can upload your media files and play them right from the desktop. obviously it requires a broadband connection. Note that the terms of use say you must own the copyright to any media up upload (or have permission otherwise to be doing so). I would imagine this means it's meant to be used to your personal photos and music you've created, but not your entire mp3 collection. Who knows whether they'll try to enforce that.

I think it can't be free and unlimited forever. Even $50 a year seems too cheap. Not sure how anyone could have "unlimited" anything on the web, there must be a caveat in their terms and conditions.

If I DVR movies and upload them, as long as they are private, I should be ok legally right? I'm not a lawyer so I didn't look real hard at their T&C.

I'll start to upload my first TB, will see how long it stays "free". It will take a week. Hmm, at 162GB a day. Thats 59TB a year. I don't think their servers can keep up with everyone who has Fios.

(please don't jump off the deep end, I was just being theoretical, I'm not going to upload 1T to this poor startup)

You are only calculating the low end fios. All the new packages are up to 20Mb upload. 1.6TB/day and 590TB a year.

READ the Terms and Conditions! There was a story in the Houston Chronicle recently that said
that the T&C of most online cloud computing applications give the provider (that's them) almost
unlimited right to use the user's (that's you) uploaded files.

I haven't read this company's T&C myself, but *you* should, before uploading anything you don't
*really* want to share

... with the world

... forever.
