Can I use this in my computer which has broken LAN chip so of not much use for internet surfing. Can i use it along with a cheap video card as a Blue ray DVD player that outputs in HDMI on a HDTV. My compy has a toslink port so I can get channel sound. Just thinking of using it as Blue ray players cheapest of those sells for 319 as of yesterday. SO maybe 99 for drive and say another 50 for decent video card can give me a blue ray dvd player for half the price of an actual hardware based blue ray dvd player. ANy inputs and user experiences doing this way will be appreciated and will help everyone here.
PC spec AMD athlon 64 3400+ 512 MB memory for now but will upgrade SLI enabled mother board with integrated video two HDD 320 and 60GB WInXP SP3

You'll need a decent video card and lots of ram to run blu-ray. Entegrated video wont cut it with blu-ray. If you have SLI enabled mobo, you could get a better video card to run this.
The short answer is... it will work if you also add BlueRay decoding software. It may not work with some regular PC monitors due to encryption, but will outplay to a HDTV with no issues.
It may not work as well as you want it to though, unless you have gone to the trouble (and few do) to implement a remote control then its not very user friendly unless you are sitting AT the PC. (I have 2 different remotes that I haven't ever gotten to work reliably- and I am pretty PC savvy) You could also just get a Sony Playstation as a player too.
My laptop has a BluRay drive on it, but I find myself just as likely to rent DVDs instead of BR and not deal with the hassles involved. I suppose I will end up with either a standalone or Home Theater system with BR next year though.
System Requirements for Blu-ray Video Playback: Pentium® D 3.4 GHz or faster (Recommend Core™ 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or higher), 512 MB RAM or more (Recommend 1GB or more), HDCP-supported display with HDMI or DVI video input (Recommend 1,920x1,080 resolution or higher), PCI Express compatible, HDCP-supported graphic card with HDMI or DVI video output with 256 MB video RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 or ATI RADEON X1600 or higher (Highly recommend NVIDIA, GPU with PureVideo HD technology or ATI GPU with UVD technology e.g. GeForce 8600/8500/8400 or RADEON HD2600/2400), Internet connection (Recommend broadband), Windows® Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Business oder Windows XP Home/Professional, Blu-ray playback software.

It's also unlikely that her integrated supports HDCP, even though AnyDVD takes care of this.
Heh, I was keeping it simple by not getting into detail on HDCP. I assumed she would be outputting to a HD screen -- which WOULD likely be HDCP. Otherwise on a smaller than 32" display there isn't any noticable quality difference in DVD and BlueRay. I have a 24" HDCP monitor on my PC as well as a 42" 1920x1080 Panasonic Plasma. The quality difference is very noticable on the 42, its impossible to tell on the 24".
Some integrated video can handle it, and a 3400+ is strong enough though it will be slow to start up -- especially with the 512 Ram. You can get a decent video card pretty cheap now --

you have got to be kidding me. there is a HUGE difference between DVD and just 720p video on my 20" lcd. Now the difference between 720p and 1080p is a little harder to tell, but its noticeable

This argument is missing the third critical component for determining what resolutions are noticibly better: Viewing Distance. I've found this chart pretty accurate to take this into account.
Is this Bluray more than enough, or are there BETTER ones. I don't know diddly about Bluray. I have an HD-DVD player (Toshiba HD-A3), so I don't need to get a combo drive anyway. I just want to know how this Bluray drive compares to others, or if they're all the same. thx.

So basically you want to have a bluray drive to watch HD movies, yet not put any money into it. $50 for a graphics card that will output HDMI? You're joking right?

Huh? There are serveral descent ATI & Nvidia baased video cards available that support Blu-Ray playback (ie HDCP, DX10, Native HDMI connection or support DVI-HDMI) for under $50

Search for HD 3450 hdmi I got it for $20 AR from Newegg. Was ASUS brand.
If you need software you can get WinDVD 9 plus Blu-ray (plays back both Blu-ray and HD-DVD if you have a combo drive) from this link with checkout code WINDVD20GIFT for a total price of $39.99 (normally $99).
Thanks everyone for their input. I think in my MOBO there is something wrong with VIA chip since it is AMD board and there VIA handles LAN. I even tried installing a LAN card from my old computer still I dont get right IP address when using verizon dsl. I get 169.x.x.x which I know is not right. I can't connect to internet because of this.
I tried pinging my modem ping 192.168.1.1 and ping 192.168.1.1.0 both queries returned with 100% lost packets.
Tried pinging LAN card ping 127.0.0.1, no packet loss.
Even tried connecting a USB wireless adapter and Verizon modem thru USB since now it comes with both rj45 and usb y cable, both dont work, so I believe problem with my ASUS A8V MBs VIA chip. I updated Lan card driver too.
Now I am now getting a cheap FoxConn MB with SLI from www.Geeks.com to at least get a working LAN. Thanks for your input.
I cant think of any other solution.

Not really 50 but 66. Provantage has a Hdmi card I think it outputs in HDMI if I am not mistaken. Radeon HD2400PRO PCIE 256MB HDMI DVI-I VGA. http://www.provantage.com/visiontek-900174~7VSTV046.htm But as everyone pointed out it is not worth it. Maybe best is to buy a bR-player or PS3. Thanks

I just have to ask... why are you buying SLI mainboards if you aren't putting dedicated graphics cards in them? No offense, but you know SLI does nothing for your integrated chipset graphics. =(
Until they get native Blu-ray playback in VMC (looks like that won't be until TV Pack 2009 now) I don't have a use for this...but the plus side is by the time that happens drives will be this price on the high-end. =)
Well I got good deal on this Foxconn board, actually it was cheapest for $35 + $10 shipping but after using coupon I ended up paying $42.xx shipped. I thoght even if this one does not work then I just loose $42. If it works then great. My old supposedly broken does work fine since 2005 only till last week when I first time or maybe 2nd tie connected to lan. Before this it used to work fine with wireless USB adapter, but since last week it even stopped doeinf that so I think its chip broke down. Asus A8V has speech feature which I believe tells you whats wrong with MB by emitting beeps at the time of start up but I cant decode the beeping it makes at the time of startup, so through maybe VIA chip broken. DOnt care for SLI, but if I am getteing for free I think wont hurt as I believe. In fact will give an option to run SLI cards in future, but maybe not as I am doing this to just rescue my AMD 3400+ socket 939 processor and doing so by spending least to at least get a PC running again with an ability to connect Internet. Other than internet everything works find, by this I mean all programs etc. So just trying to spend minimal to atleast make use of my dsl connection which practically use for last 2 weeks. INfact I must tell you I even asked verizon to send me new modem and they did. Even with new modem I could not connect, while same modem works flwalessly with my latop, so I think VIA chip is broken.
Link for MOBO (Foxconn NF4SK8AA-8EKRS NVIDIA NF4 SLI Socket 939 ATX MB)

I used both a cheapo Nvidia 8400GS and ATI 3450(both less than $30 after rebate) for blu-ray with my 720P projector and LCD-TV. These cards both play blu-ray perfectly fine, even though they are relatively cheap. For my money, the Nvidia just looks better with blu-ray. Maybe the purevideo is better than ATI's version, or maybe my software wasn't using the ATI version to the max.
So my point is, you don't need to break the bank when getting a video card, especially if you are running 720P. These might even run 1080P OK. I tried onboard 7150 Nvidia and it played OK, but it did skip a little bit at 720P.
I think it might be more important to have a dual-core chip, either AMD to intel.
Blu-ray looks awesome at 100" with my DLP 720P projector. You don't need 1080P to get a real nice picture with blu-ray. This is a nice cheap way to get into to blu-ray, and you might even be able to rip files to your hard drive for viewing later.

3400+ isn't a bad processor. (I have a 4600+ X2 gathering dust ATM)
DVD playback that is upconverted and formatted right is pretty close to HD on a small screen. Its not even close on a big screen. (the panasonic is literally almost 4x the size of my Samsung 245BW monitor -- but the same native resolution)
