Oh, our elantra gets 35-37 hwy mpg depending on ac.

Thats less than I would expect from that lil car.
My 03 MB C320 6 speed manual gets 30-33 on the highway.

My 04 5.7L Corvette gets 27 MPG on the highway.

don't really know why these people are comparing cars costing 3x the price to econocars, seriously? Both the accent and elantra are good cars, cheap to maintain and cheap upfront cost. don't let the brand fool you nor people saying oh I have (google cars costing x3 the price and enter it here) discourage you from looking into these type of cars. If you are in the market for a reasonably priced car and do not want to buy used, these are good cars to consider. These are reliable cars equipped with modern safety features and again, cheap to maintain. Not everyone needs a 40K+ car as a daily driver. I have a Kia Spectra 5 SX as a daily driver and also an S2000 for weekend fun. The kia has been just as reliable as the honda. Do your research people, thats all I'm saying.

Even prostitutes will probably look at you lowly in a Hyundai.

Ha ha. That was funny. However, i think a few folks still think of hyundai as the crappy Korean car company of the 80s. Those days are over folks. They now build world class cars that has Detroit execs spending long nights at the office. Witness the upcoming coupe...

Didnt Mazda dropped Millenia way back in 2002 for US Market?
The Millenia uses a Miller Cycle Powerplant that breaks down and is expensive to repair.
Mazda doesnt have a luxury contender in US. Anyways their cars are slitely more expensive than honda and Toyota. And they are more focused in the sporty and stylish cars....

I think Mazda discontinued the Millenia in 2003 actually. It was a really good looking car I thought. Still see them on the road.

I don't think all Millenia received the Miller cycle engine in all model years. (That was only the S).

I know the regular Millenia got pretty good reliability.

I have never heard that the miller cycle versions were unreliable and expensive to repair. What have you heard?

(Mazda still uses Miller cycle engines, but not in the USA I think)

NoPieForZeus said:The problem is that once a car climbs over 30k in price, image and status become part of the equation. Every review I have seen of the Genesis says it redefines the quality a 35k car can be and compares favorably with much more expensive vehicles as well. People just have a hard time paying that much for a "value" brand name. Toyota succeeded not only because their Lexus vehicles were excellent but they differentiated them significantly from the "value" Toyota brand name and provided a "Better" dealer experience (e.g. not having to rub elbows with common peons driving Camrys).

Upscaling without that market differentiation doesn''t work. For example, Mazda dumped their plans for the Amanti luxury brand and dealer network. They just released their first "Amanti" vehicle (the Millenia) under the Mazda name - the vehicle was much better than the base Mazda but failed to draw buyers who saw the car as too "pricey" to be a Mazda.

It's only in America that we have this problem. The Lexus brand doesn't exist in other parts of the world. For the most part they're all badged "Toyota".

Actually Lexus does ( http://www.lexus.eu/ ) While many other luxury brands don't (Acura, Mercury, etc)

My cousin bought 2006 Sonata V6 for just over 20k after taxes and licenses(WA 9.8% tax) in 2006. After riding and driving their car for awhile, We decided to buy one. Our 2007 Sonata V6, which we bought just under 20k after taxes and licenses, are doing great after 1.5 years later. I'm thinking we might need a second car... perhaps a small elantra.

hmmm...

My sonata didn't give me that feeling...not anymore than my mother's accord or my previous tacoma truck(v6)

Hyundai couldn't have picked a worse time to unveil the Genesis, and their 'cost saving' move of not setting up a different dealer network and brand name will end up being their great undoing.

I've driven the Genesis, and while it's okay, it is not the equal of the proclaimed benchmarks. The only areas it meets those lofty goals, specifically, is in noise levels and content ('goodies').

But for the right price, anything can sell. Don't be surprised to see heavy incentives on the Genesis once the 'honeymoon' period is over and they start importing them in heavier volume.

Hyundai has manufacturing facilities here in the US, they don't import cars here.
Also, Hyundai has a model that allows them to build cars at low costs, hence pass on price saving to their customers. Starting a new brand means starting new manufacture facilities which means higher prices...soon you don't have any price advantages against BMW/MB/Lexus...

Hyundai does much ore than just autos...they are enormous. From doing a lot of overseas travel, Hyundai is top-notch -- not just vehicles, but electronics especially. Hyundai has a great brand, it's just the US consumers that doesn't see Hyundai as a top brand. Eventually they'll change that; changing the name is not the answer...providing a great product less than competition is the way to do it.

Speaking of being enormous, i'm sure most of you have seen containers on the 18-wheelers with "hyundai" on it. It's the same conglomerate. They are actually also known for #1 Shipbuilder in the world. Hynix, the chipmaker is also Hyundai.

Well, Go here for the wiki details
