I have yet to see any Kia get consistently high ratings as Hyundai.

Wow, but not really surprised to see Hyundai getting such good reviews here. This is a savvy bunch. I got my 07 Elantra for my commute, put 27K miles on it last year, not a problem at all...a very comfortable (me 6'4") and fun car to drive. The extras in the package I got were great for the price. For 12800 plus TTL it ain't my other car (G35 coupe) but I am getting 34.7mpg averaged over the year. Nice car.

Actually, this is somewhat true. There are minor differences between Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

The Optima and Sonata for the 2009 model year will use identical 4 cylinder engines.

The biggest advantage I see with Hyundai is a larger base of dealers, so that service and warranty issues can be addressed more conveniently.

The biggest advantage I see with Kia is that there is a cost savings over the Hyundai counterpart.

A Hyundai, you know that in two years it's going to be worth 50% of what you paid right?

Be smart and by a couple year old honda, best car in the world for the $$$ And you'll be able to sell it for almost what you paid for it!

That is assuming you are going to sell it. I personally, choose to buy a new car and drive it until it dies. That's how I get my return on investment.

Cars are depreciating assets, unless you happen upon a future, highly desirable collectable.

The aim of the game is to achieve the least depreciation on a per annum basis for mass produced, commuter vehicles, and thus, the lowest total ownership costs.

Nothing but good words for the 2003 Sonata I drive, I'm getting close to 150k miles (at 145k currently) without any issues, just regular maintenance (oil, filter, wipers, breaks, tires).

Now the domestic cars the rest of my family drives...that's another story

- i bought Hyndai Accent 2000 model for less than around $10,000
- used it for 5 years - 60,000 miles
- oil change every 10,000 miles
- tire change and brake pad change
- sold this for around $5000 in year 2005, as i upgraded to a minivan.

Do the math.

Well last year i was shopping around for car, and found Honda & Toyota dealers are so ill mannered. Plus there were no discounts at all. Went for Sonata 08. Priced at 19K i spend almost 4 hours negotiating the price and was successful to buy it at 14K
Very happy with the car. Will buy another one for my wife pretty soon.

Also would like to see there Genesis, seems to be a good car.

I bought a Hyundai Accent 2004 new for about 11k
Drove it for 4 years - I don't drive alot so it only had 28k miles on it
Just traded it in for a 2008 Accent. They gave me 5k for my trade
I had trouble getting a 2008 with the power package - none of them had power instead they were trying to get me into a higher priced car. So I said I would wait. They found one at another dealer for me with power the next day. Got the 2008 for 14k minus my trade in. I never had any problems with my 2004 Accent and now I should be trouble free and car payment free for another 5 years. I think its a good car for the money.

32K+... 0-60 MPH in 5.4 sec faster than the Porsche Boxer... rear wheel drive...in snow country rear wheel drive is trouble.
Not sure what Hyundai is thinking here but they have surprised me before!

Kia is owned by Hyundai, aren't they?

Kia is owned by Hyundai.

I bought an accent sedan in 2006 and it rocks. I drive the manual. We get 35 on the highway when I'm travelling long distance. We get 27 in the city. As a commuter and I will drive 85MPH+ at times on most days to work I get average of 31 blended.

As for AC...the base sedan comes with AC and CD (no mp3 port). My kids though get a kick out of the roll up windows. You should have seen the first time they got in the car and had no idea how the windows worked.

N.B. Speaking of the Genesis. I was at an airshow this weekend and got to drive it. That car rocks. I has great lines and handles like a 5Series.

OP..the car shown isn't the sedan for that price but the 3 door. That being said still a great car.

I got a 2008 Elantra GLS for $12,750. 5 speed with the $1750 package that has A/C, XM, etc. Came with floormats, mudgards, and cargo net which is a bit of a ripoff at $240 retail price.

They gave me $400 for a new grad discount. $16,210 sticker but I bet you could do these cars for 13K pretty easy.

13k is a great price for an Elantra!

curious for those who think the quality is comparable to Toyota / Honda, if I were to get a used one how far back would this apply? Even 2000 model?

No... 2000 Hyundais dont have the same quality. 2003 was the first Sonata I bought and it was a quality car. Never had a serious problem!

I wouldn't go back more than 5 years. The '07 year was a watershed for the Elantra in terms of gas mileage and quality. Not sure of other models. The quality in terms of reliability and problems of my '07 Elantra so far is comparable to my older Accord and my Infiniti G35 (though the G35 is a COMPLETELY different car that an Elantra cannot be compared to in any other regard).
