Best Buy's website has the Panasonic TH-50PX80U 50" 720p Plasma on sale for $997.99 with free shipping. I got this set a month or so back from Fry's (Originally @ $1097 but got $98 back when they dropped the price to $999) and have been quite happy with it.
They also have the 42" 720p TH42PX80U on sale for $799.99, also with free shipping, although there have been much better deals on that.
costco is more and the set has one less hdmi...but..3 months no hassle return policy or restocking fee bull...and of course 2 year versus 1 year warranty. 50 bucks more than bestbuy...
also the screen boarders are flat black not shiny black...and its better to have a flat border since it prevents any border reflections.
the thing I like about costco..is they dont torture you when you bring back stuff...
My sons ipod stop working after 35 days..no problem...at other stores..they tell you..tough luck..your past 30 days..
I have the 42 panny and its a great TV, would have no problem recommending it. Like all plasmas, it does not like brightly lit rooms but its not worse than my old Sony 32 CRT.

I am interested in purchasing this. But the sales person at BB was telling me that 720p performance will be noticeably lower than 1080p when i use blue ray player for movies. I understand that 1080p is a better option but how much difference are we talking in using 720p with blue ray player? Any feedback from forum members using this setup -720p with blue ray player - will be very helpful.

It's a great price for a nice plasma with a great reputation - don't let the salesman dissuade you. You can also get it at Sears for the same price less 10% for charging on a Sears card. Blue ray 1080p output displayed on this 720p set will look great. Whether there's no difference, it looks slightly better or noticeably better is really in the eye of the beholder, their viewing distance, etc. For most users, I'd guess the answer would be somewhere between no difference to only a little bit better (but only if you're staring at a 720p and 1080p set side to side playing the same material looking for the slight differences).
They also have the Samsung 50" 720p Plasma, a better HDTV IMHO, for the same price. LINK
From CNET.com Samsung: Overall score: 8.0 The good: Highly accurate primary colors and color temperature; above-average video processing with effective noise reduction; oodles of picture controls and settings; friendly, intuitive menu design; handsome look.
The bad: Subpar antireflective screen; black levels not quite as deep as those of the best plasmas; confusing picture mode arrangement.
Panasonic: Overall score: 7.3 The good: Relatively inexpensive; produces a deep shade of black; accurate initial color temperature; solid connectivity with three HDMI inputs; handsome, understated exterior.
The bad: Color decoding accentuates red; inaccurate primary color of green; ineffective noise reduction.

Less 10% how? I thought a new Sears application would get 10% off but a Sears employee here said that we can't get 10% off with a new application.

10% off on HD TVs over 40 inches per the website with purchase on a Sears card. I think it is instant in store.
Doesn't have to be a new activation, although I think it can be.
I think I'm going to go for it from Sears $900 for a 50incher its hard to say no.....

On a TV this size you will be hard presses to tell the difference. Generally speaking you start to see the difference at 55" and above. I have the previous model (TH-50PX70) and love it.

Is there a thread(or link) describing this "Home theater" offer?
I have the Panny on back order from Amazon for $998 shipped(after tax total), plus another $60 less with credit card rewards.
In the meantime, i'm still looking hard at the Sammy because of it's suitability for use with pc(in spite of my worries about it's reflectivity).
ps. Just returned from a month long vist with relatives, for whom I purchased the 42PX80U for $680($713 after tax total), which included a home theater set. It's really pretty awesome.

I just picked mine up by the way.
Thanks a lot. See it now.
The more I studied this Samsung Plasma combo deal, the more I liked it. The total combo price is cheaper than the sale price of the TV alone. Yeah, one of those deals. Even though I'm not really interested in the home theater set, it does not seem like a throw-away. Hopefully I can net $250-300 for it on eBay. It has a buy it now price of over $350.
If the Samsung deal has not been posted, I certainly don't know why. Seems very, very hot.
I called to cancel my Panasonic set from Amazon. Hope fully they cancel promptly as it was in the prepping to be shipped stage.
Thanks again. I hope the Samsung is the equal of the Panny as at least one of you says. I really liked the Pannys, but like I said, maybe not so suitable for use with PC.

Hope your/cnet reviews of the Sammy turn out to be right. That combo deal was too hot for me to pass up. My set gets delivered in exactly one week. Really leary about the reflectivity/IR/BI, but hey, if it's unbearabe, I can return it locally.
