I have done this two years in the past (when the promotion was at the Mills malls) and it was very easy to do. You simply took the receipts to the customer service center and they would validate them and add the totals up. The did not keep the receipts but they would stamp them to indicate that they had been used. In the past you would also get a $20 gift card for every $200 spent. I bought a laptop at a Circuit City in the mall for $1000 (before multiple rebates) and got five $20 gift cards. Unfortunately there are no malls near me participating this year.

In Cook County (Chicago), our sales tax is crazy 10%. So it's like buying stuff tax free. I may as well do that online and save the hassle of crowd and gas and traffic....

when will cook county learn? I know of dozens of ppl who used to take an annual trip to the Magnificent Mile to shop. With 10% sales tax, we all quit going. Can't wait for 45% federal income tax, I guess i will have less incentive to work as will dozens of millions of other ppl. GoCubs said:In Cook County (Chicago), our sales tax is crazy 10%. BryansAccount said:I absolutely abused this last year. Maxed out by putting $1000 each on 4 different discover cards at 4 different malls and then returned all the stuff. Discover paid for all my christmass gifts last year!

I dont know if I want to do it again this year, it was a big time commitment and quite a pain in the ass to return everything. It is surprisingly hard to find portable, easily returnable items at some malls.

jewelry store????

anyways, i am excited!! does anyone know if its 5 per account per mall? or just 5 per account period? do they write your card number down? so what if I max out, and then ask for a replacement card which then my CC # would change if I "accidently" lose my card.

I'm not sure what the return policy at Apple Store, but most of their products are high ticketed.

It looks like Apple makes you ship the item to return it. Can anyone confirm that you can not bring an unopened ipod back to any Apple Store for full refund?

OK, n00b questions.

Is it a limit of 5 GCs per account per mall, or 5 GCs per account total?

Let's say I have two cards. Can I do both of them at the same time, i.e. buy two items for $1000 a pop each, go to CS with both cards, and walk out with $200?

"On paper" it is 5 cards per account (total). Reality has actually been very different. If you have 2 cards with different numbers, perhaps one is a biz card, then yes you can do it 2x at the same mall. Let's say you have a partner under your account, two different cards but same numbers. Just make sure that you are not standing back to back at the cs line when you get your cards and then you can each take advantage of the deal. Make sense?

thanks tashayar.

I guess we have to wait for field reports to see how strict the policies are this year.

Last year I actually did it 3 times on the same card (different days). They did write it down put don't ever cross reference on future purchases.

My mall runs swipes the card for some checking on discover card, not sure if that will catch how many cards have been issued.

I just got back and they swiped my cards (Lakeforest Mall, MD).

I got my first GC today (paid cell phone bill at ATT store). They were unpacking the boxes from Discover when I got to CS.

They used a special laptop from Discover. They swiped my Discover card, then input the ID code from the Gift Card they gave to me so it would be activated. They didn't write anything down or have me sign anything, contrary to previous years. I expect that this means the 5 card limit will be consistently enforced at least at the same mall. Probably means authorized user cards won't work since they have the same account number. Whether these laptops are networked across all the malls or not remains to be seen--if they are, then we might see an actual 5 card limit, not 5 cards per mall/per different CS worker.

Read the thread...more malls to come. See:

Willowbrook Mall

was added before your post.

They swipe the cards on a laptop this year, same as in the past years. Remember though, it is max 5 gift cards per account, nothing says you can't have multiple Discover accounts
