In that time we've seen that there's no limit to what you can do with a DreamHost account. So we're having a limitless sale for a limited time!
The first 1,111 new customers to sign up with DreamHost today will get UNLIMITED resources, both disk space and bandwidth, for the life of their hosting with us.
We take our birthday very seriously. (We're just a little confused about which direction the presents go.)
UNLIMITED + 50GB Disk UNLIMITED Transfer Plus many more features! Sign up for $5.95/mo*
If anyone wants a serious offsite backup solution, this would do it.
Although really, if you challenged their "unlimited" claims, you'd probably be shot down.

My first thought - who's to say they'll be in business for 10 years? A decade ago, I got burned when 'dialup for lifetime' went out of business after about 2 years. I'm not sure I'd want to do something similar again.

unlimited transfer and storage is pure hype. go with a hosting company that does not have to resort to unethical sales tactics as this to earn your trust and business
Unlimited is just a word. It's more like unmetered and yes I've reached that point. The company I was with personally upgraded the server I was on. However there's another thing that involved server load. Where if you get too many requests at once, you'll crash the server. The server load is not unlimited and rarely is.
I'm currently with BlueHost I prefer them over GoDaddy and dreamhost. I've used dream host but they were about the same as BlueHost, only difference was bluehost offered me more at the time. So I switched.
I think that they will both be around for a long time. They've been around since 1997. Which is good I do believe the average host crashes and burns around 5 years in (I think, don't quote me on it)
This isn't that bad though I create websites as a side job and some clients don't want to have to worry about yearly payments etc. I once had a client who wanted me to register a domain for 30 years. 30 years! Average client wants 10-15 years.
So this is a good deal for people with business in mind. Maybe not so much on a personal level.
Check the rules about the free domain that comes with the hosting. Generally once you end the hosting with the company, they own the domain, you don't. I'd register the domain separately with another company. That's what I use GoDaddy and domainsite for.

Their price of $5.95/month is if you prepay for 10 years upfront. If you want to pay for one year the price is $9.95/month ($119.40/year). But there are always promo codes which will give you $50 discount, so you basically get a year of hosting for $5.78/month ($69.40/year). Promo code PLATINUM is for $50 discount + 3 Free domain names.

Terrible host. You won't ever realize their "unlimited" promises. First, you can't use it as storage. Second, their reliability sucks. Take your money somewhere else.

Such general comments are not helpful when it comes to web hosting. There are hosting providers that offer higher reliability then Dreamhost - for a higher price. I've been with Dreamhost for over 2 years and have tried several others in the same price bracket. Dreamhost fares alright within their class. Support has gotten back to me within 12 hours in most cases. They are not the provider of choice for critical sites. Just a few weeks ago they had a major outage and my sites were down for over 24 hours, so were hundred others on the same cluster. That was the longest downtime though by far during my time with them. For critical sites I go somewhere else but often a two day downtime every other year is acceptable when paying considerably less then elsewhere.
And yes, the storage is only for "web content". I do have non-web content there (i.e. Subversion repositories) and they haven't complaint because I don't overuse. You do get a 50 gig backup where they probably never check what you're storing.
So yes, expect some downtime when you go with Dreamhost. This will happen with every other provider where you pay what you pay for a Dreamhost account. If you, chocoruacal, know a provider that has for years offered a more reliable service for the same price I'd like to learn about it.
