Just received mine about an hour ago. Uploaded DD-WRT build 9856 then 10431. Works great so far as a wireless bridge! Tough to beat at $25. Can you post a link to the 10431 you used?

Yep, I flashed this after installing the 9856 build. http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/others/eko/V24_TNG/svn10431/dd-wrt.v24-10431_VINT_mini.bin
The 1 thing I noticed was firefox doesn't play well with the DD-WRT control panel. I'd stick with IE for that. Yeah firefox kept telling me invalid filename when I was trying to flash....thanks for the info....what version of firefox were you using? |

Please note, I haven't received mine yet (it is scheduled to arrive today, may have even already arrived, but I am at work), but, according to the DD-WRT Installation instructions linked in the quick summary --
DD-WRT Installation instructions said:NEWD = New Drivers; VINT = Vintage Drivers. Use only NEWD firmwares with this router. VINT builds are for much older routers. Why did you choose one of the VINT builds? Did the NEWD build not work? |

Quick question for those who have received their order already, are you getting version 1 or 2 of the WNR834B? |

I just received my order from Frys. I'm trying to install dd-wrt and followed the instructions by downloading the correct firmware in dot.chk format. Using the stock router login, I've attempted to install the dot.chk file but keep getting an error: Invalid filename was provided, please enter again: (*.img) I've tried with both Firefox 3 and IE...same error. I'm thinking that maybe it's not a v2. In the router settings it says firmware version v1.0.3.8. I can't find anything on the router itself designating which version it is. Any help? |

Any help? Yeah, cross referenced firmware 1.0.3.8 to V1 of the WNR834B. http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wnr834bv1.asp Did a quick search and people have gotten DD-WRT installed on the V1 version. However, it might require a trickier install procedure http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=21712 Good luck with the install. |

Any help? On the back of the router by the ethernet ports my router identifies itself as a ...834b v2 |

Good luck with the install. For those with the 834b Version 1 the latest APPEARS to be http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/stable/dd-wrt.v24%20SP1/Consumer/Netgear/WNR834B/dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin Dated 07/28/08 The instructions in the thread mentioned an earlier version but basically said: Go to the Website http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/dd-wrt/downloads.html 2. release candidates 3. DD-WRT v24 RC6.2 4. Broadcom 5. Netgear 6. WNR834B 7. download the file "dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin" Some of the docs indicated you would first need a modded .chk file to get to dd-wrt from netgear....you'd probably have to search the thread for the one to start with.

Thanks for the updates. I'll give the dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin a go tomorrow night, as per the directions here. If anybody finds the modified .chk in the meantime, that would be excellent. I'll let you know how it goes...thanks again. |

Any help? It should have been a V2, thats what Fry's description said anyway. It should say V2 on the back under the ethernet ports surrounded with orange |

I wouldn't be surprised to see V1 router with a V2 label. A lot of the Sansa refurbished MP3 players from Buy.com earlier this year had V2 backs but were really V1 based on firmware (which was a good thing for those of us that wanted to load rockbox). The vendors may swap outsides from newer models. I got mine WAP yesterday and unfortunately it appears to have a busted power brick. The power supply from my co-workers Linksys runs my WAP but my brick just fails after about 10 seconds. It seems to be the brick because unplugging the router does not reset the power but uplugging the brick does. I hoping I can dig up another 12 volt brick at home and use that so I don't have to RMA. |

It should have been a V2, thats what Fry's description said anyway. It should say V2 on the back under the ethernet ports surrounded with orange It indeed does not say V2 anywhere, the fact that I can't upgrade the firmware as per the instructions on the dd-wrt website, and that the stock Netgear firmware suggests a v1, unfortunately probably means that it's a v1. |

There *is* a difference between the V1 and V2 of the WNR834B- the V2 has 3 internal antennas while the V1 has only 2. That, and dd-wrt is easier to load on a V2 /edit/ If you got a V1, I'd call frys and demand a V2... even if it has to be new! They sold you a V2 per the description... |
