I got one on clearance more than a year ago at around this price. It works okay and it is very hackable, but there are many options available that may give you better performance, flexibility, and capacity now. Afterall, this have been out for several years already.

Awesome device at a good price. It is several years old but I have not found anything I like better for backups. You also can turn it into a full Linux box and use it as a web server, ftp server, media server (including iTunes), digital camera server, etc. Link to main NSLU2 hacking site.

Anyone know at what point Amazon adds on the sales tax for NY residents?

I was not going to order if I saw the sales tax appear, but it never did when I ultimately clicked "Proceed with order", and my confirmation email says the Grand Total is $43.95

Is it possible they've stopped collecting for NY, as Newegg has done?

Seems you can run a customized version of Linux on it. Can you run any p2p softwares, like emule or bittorrent on it? If yes, then it would be a great downloading machine.

There are all kinds of bittorent options for an Unslung NSLU2. Here is the page describing the options. There also are several eMule options here.

Let me save everyone some time if you use the NSLU2 with Vista (a lesson I just learned the hard way). Vista defaults to using NTLMv2 protocol, which is not supported by the version of Samba in the NSLU2. As a result, Vista cannot access password protected shares on the NSLU2. There are three available fixes that I know of:

1. Run secpol.msc; Go to Local Policies > Security Options; Find "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level"; Change setting from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"
2. If your version of Vista does not have secpol.msc (e.g., Home Premium), run Regedit, change the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel from 3 to 1
3. If you run Unslung (the replacement firmware that makes your NSLU2 a linux box), update your version of Samba per these instructions

Number 2 worked perfectly for me.

Note that if your Vista box is on another workgroup than the NSLU2, instead of just using your username when logging onto a network share, you may have to use NSLU2'S_WORKGROUP_NAME\USER_NAME.

Good price on the device. It is old now but is still fun to play with and is a low power option for some services that you want to run 100% of the time.
