Americans will always find a way to profit off deaths and tragedy.

You want profiting off death and tragedy, talk about Bush or Cheney. Talk about insurance companies. Enron. Banks. Halliburton.

You want profiting as an unintended result of death/tragedy, that's what this deal is. Amazon didn't kill Newman and they didn't wish him any ill will. The fact that he died, however, puts him in the public's mind. This means they can offer a sale on some of his classic movies to commemorate his life and accomplishments. If I were an actor, that's how I would want to be remembered - my shining moments of film. This deal brings that to people who don't already have these movies or alternatively haven't been exposed to Paul Newman's work before.

You want profiting off his death, that would be if this cost $16 last week and they jacked the price to $30 following his death. They haven't done that so I fail to see people's beef with this deal as remotely rational.

If banks and the government can do it, why can't Amazon?

Actually a giveaway in remembrance of Paul Newman would be appropriate.

Worth $8.99 at best.

Maybe $9.99 if they throw in some free spaghetti sauce.

Paul Newman has previously indicated in interviews that he wanted his charities (e.g., Hole in the Wall Gang) to live on after his passing. So, if you really want to honor this great actor and generous man, buy his namesake salad dressings, spaghetti sauces, etc. The proceeds from these products go to his charities.

Nobody said buying this and supporting charities were mutually exclusive. Sheesh.
