I've known about the possible availability of the 8% coupon, but never tried to use it before. It worked for me just now, though I never received an email regarding it (and I've been checking my Buy.com emails intermittently over the last few months).

Seeing as how I haven't purchased anything from Buy.com in a good long while (a year or more, probably), I am not surprised it worked for me. They used to do that all the time, i.e., send decent coupons in an effort to entice you back.

Still... I'm worried about following through on this deal. The rebate company seems hard core. You must register on line first! Be sure to put your special 'claim id' on your envelope! etc. they scare me.

love to buy if I able to use the 8%, still trying to see how, havn't bought anything from them, its being a while now, but still 8% is no good for me.

After 5% coupon, comes out to $142.63 for me or $93.05 AR for me. It's ~$57 cheaper than my Seagate FreeAgent Pro 1TB deal from a pricematch to Fry's at BB! I've received one Buy.com $30 rebate from Cavalry in the past and I think it was from myrebates411 because I remember doing this form for the Cavalry 500GB. I did have to follow up with Cavalry because they did not send me the rebate. Luckily I kept a record and remembered to call them back after 5 months(sent 6/07 Received 12/07). The rebate came from Bank of the West and it was in California. Another bad thing is my 500GB Cavalry doesn't go to sleep mode ever unless I turn it off physically whereas my Seagate FreeAgent Pro/WD MyBook go to sleep mode if not used. Hard drive prices are falling but they probably won't be this low for at least 3 months. Even though I'm not really desperately running out of space, for the price of an internal hard drive and the capability to hook up the eSATA extension for my FreeAgent Pro, I'm buying. Don't know if you can combine % discounts from deal sites but there is live.com's 1%, ebates.com's 1%, upromise 1% as well as fatwallets 1%.

I've tried using the 8% but it's been a pain getting it to work for me. I guess I could make a new account and unregistered email address and possibly new credit card or address as well or just call them to get it to work but it just isn't worth the extra 3%. Anyone know the best way to get the 8% working if you haven't used it before and haven't shopped with Buy.com for a while?

This thread on external enclosures begs to differ. And you can find deals on 1TB drives for $120 or so. Still paying more than this deal, but you're not dealing with iffy rebates, and I highly prefer assembling them myself to eliminate as much risk of running into problems later on. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I have seen one pre-assembled drive after another have problem after problem of all sorts. Never had an issue with my own drive + enclosure setups.
