Don't forget this coupon for 8% off, if you qualify. NOTE: The 8% off coupon does NOT stack with the 5% off coupon. http://www.Buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=80231737&&adid=17976&dcaid=17976
Edit: The total price (for me) was $128.79 - $50.00 = 78.79 shipped

what is the eligibility for this 8%, it doesn't allow me to use this..
byteless said: never mind, got the answer (Only valid to customers who have received the e-mail).
so you used it and then post it..
The coupon is generic (not tied to any email address, and is not 1-time use), however it is only valid to people that received the email. In other words, if you previously signed up for their promotions email, it works for you. If not, it doesn't.
If you get the rebate check, it's a "very good" price for 1Tb w/ dual int. HD....Thanks OP!
My only remark is a $50 MIR from MIR411.COM. Just wonder if any FW-er can share his/her experience w/ MIR411.COM.... - Did you receive your rebate check? - How long?
I've known about the possible availability of the 8% coupon, but never tried to use it before. It worked for me just now, though I never received an email regarding it (and I've been checking my Buy.com emails intermittently over the last few months).
Seeing as how I haven't purchased anything from Buy.com in a good long while (a year or more, probably), I am not surprised it worked for me. They used to do that all the time, i.e., send decent coupons in an effort to entice you back.
Still... I'm worried about following through on this deal. The rebate company seems hard core. You must register on line first! Be sure to put your special 'claim id' on your envelope! etc. they scare me.
very little turns up about them in google searches. a few complaints about non-responsiveness and illogical rejections, but not enough to draw any conclusions about their practices and reliability.
canasdaq said: is this good deal? After 5% coupon, comes out to $142.63 for me or $93.05 AR for me. It's ~$57 cheaper than my Seagate FreeAgent Pro 1TB deal from a pricematch to Fry's at BB! I've received one Buy.com $30 rebate from Cavalry in the past and I think it was from myrebates411 because I remember doing this form for the Cavalry 500GB. I did have to follow up with Cavalry because they did not send me the rebate. Luckily I kept a record and remembered to call them back after 5 months(sent 6/07 Received 12/07). The rebate came from Bank of the West and it was in California. Another bad thing is my 500GB Cavalry doesn't go to sleep mode ever unless I turn it off physically whereas my Seagate FreeAgent Pro/WD MyBook go to sleep mode if not used. Hard drive prices are falling but they probably won't be this low for at least 3 months. Even though I'm not really desperately running out of space, for the price of an internal hard drive and the capability to hook up the eSATA extension for my FreeAgent Pro, I'm buying. Thanks for hurting my wallet! It's all your fault KingofDeal!
Don't know if you can combine % discounts from deal sites but there is live.com's 1%, ebates.com's 1%, upromise 1% as well as fatwallets 1%.
I've tried using the 8% but it's been a pain getting it to work for me. I guess I could make a new account and unregistered email address and possibly new credit card or address as well or just call them to get it to work but it just isn't worth the extra 3%. Anyone know the best way to get the 8% working if you haven't used it before and haven't shopped with Buy.com for a while?

OP, if you would, adding "Buy.com", and maybe something about it ending today, would be good.
Still a good price on this drive, though I'm usually hesitant to buy pre-assembled external drives. I'd rather get the drive and an enclosure and assemble it myself. How have people's experiences with pre-assembled external drives been, specifically with this brand too?
My m/b comes with the eSTATA connection and cable. but buying the drive and enclosure separately will jump the price to around $200.

This thread on external enclosures begs to differ. And you can find deals on 1TB drives for $120 or so. Still paying more than this deal, but you're not dealing with iffy rebates, and I highly prefer assembling them myself to eliminate as much risk of running into problems later on. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I have seen one pre-assembled drive after another have problem after problem of all sorts. Never had an issue with my own drive + enclosure setups.

Do any of the external drive enclosures have sleep mode?
The reason the 8% is not working for some is it doesn't work if you go through a FW link. The coupon says right on it it is not valid if you went through a referral site. Clear your Buy.com cookies and then copy/paste the URL into your browser to have it work.

Answering my own question from the thread Zachmo posted above, manly said:
No, at this low price, no company is going to buy a chipset with that feature to install. Most enclosures with auto on/off power saving feature are those sold with HD included under a brand name like the WD MyBook or Buffalo.
My Adaptec enclosure does do so on a Mac connected via FireWire; but for some reason it doesn't spin down when connected to a Windows PC via USB 2. There's probably a setting somewhere that I'm missing.
The answer is within your reply already. The key here is firewire vs. usb. Modern OS often has power management features that can talk to HD via S.M.A.R.T commands but when connected by USB these are lost or not translated. The enclosure's chipset has to do this talking itself. The older Maxtor OneTouch II series also has this feature but it looks like with the series III, they took that out to save cost. So far I like the MyBook most. They say you can adjust spin down/time out time but I haven't tried it.

The coupon works ONLY works if you Buy.com has qualified Buy.com your account to use it PERIOD. Not going the a FW or other referral links , clearing cookies, using different browsers, etc… is not going to help. Plus this 8% and 5% coupon are over six months old. Most who were qualified to use have done so long ago on one of the numerous Buy.com deals posted here. 90% of the posts in this thread are about using these coupons which everyone already knows about and their limitations both of which have nothing to do with the deal. If you really want something to worry about as posted earlier you should be worried www.mir411.com rebate. That company is the reincarnation of the infamous City of Industry rebate center ALA Sakkar,TrendNET, EagleTechI/O Magic, etc. with a long history of not paying rebates and where thousands of unopened rebates were found in the dumpster after the owners skipped town and fled back to China leaving thousands of unpaid rebates.

Right On! I'm skipping because of the rebate, even though I'm eligible for the 8%. If it were Newegg I'd be in, but Buy.con will be no help if I never receive the rebate.

BS! USB vs firewire and the installed chipset have little to do with powersaving features and getting those commands to the HD including spin down. If your HD and the OS hosting supports these features then it will work. While it may not be the default settings of your HDs firmware or host OS Power Management settings , you can get any external HD to spin down using power management featues either alredy in the drives firmware, your PC's BIOS, or using the Power Managemnt fearures of the host OS as long as the HD (not the case and Interface) actually supports those features. While the external case itself and insalled fans may still continue to run the HD will spin down if it supports that feature regrardless of the interface chipset or type of interface used.
Can anyone give a quick explanation as to how the esata hooks up in yor pc? Does it take up a slot? If so does that prevent you from having another internal drive? Thanks.

Sorry if I sound rude or anything, but the esata connector on the external drive is attached to an esata cable. The other end of that cable attaches to an esata port on your computer. If you don't have an esata port on your computer, you can add one via a PCI or PCI-e card. If you aren't concerned about looks, you can use an internal sata port and get a sata-> esata (or vice versa) cable, and route it to go outside the computer.

eSATA is simply "external SATA" and it connects directly to the front panel of your case most of the time. Some motherboards have a port on the back.
Really? And which one of those enclosure deals on that list is active right now??

cnIsfg is on the money, you can get any external hard drive to automatically spin down if you change the systems power settings. In the case of eSATA, because the system doesn't know they're not internal, the drives power on and off with the rest of the computer. They will spin down at idle times if you have that set.

pretty sure it's 1 YR on Cavalry drives http://www.cavalrystorage.com/warrantyterms.htm
i've found that warranties for most of these portable hd's are only 1 yr even from Seagate and Western Digital. always suggest to peopel to check the model number on the manuf website before you buy.
i can't wait for Solid State portable drives!!!

reviewers at Buy.com say the internal HD is a Western Digital Caviar GP WD10EACS 1TB SATA drive. Awesome drive!! in 4 1 and crossing fingers for rebate.
