I've purchased several items from Costco both name brand and Kirkland, Costco's store brand. A lot of the time, Kirkland is superior to the name-brands, or even the same product (Kirkland vodka is pretty much Grey Goose, if you didn't know). But Kirkland toilet paper... is bad. Quite bad. Paper towels? Love those. But when it comes to TP... I have to go for Charmin.

Now, I haven't bought every single Kirkland item (far from it), but I'd like to know what you guys have found with the Kirkland label that surpasses the product it's competing with- or if there's a specific Kirkland item that is utter crap (crap... toilet paper... get it?), please post that too.

I want to save more money without wasting time. Obviously I can buy and return if I don't like it, but I don't want to deal with the hassle if I don't have to.

the last time i checked, kirkland laundry detergent was very highly rated and very economical. you can search the gardenweb laundry forum for more info. the Sears and WalMart private label detergents are also highly rated, but they all may periodically reformulate the formulas or switch suppliers so you need to keep up with the information.

also, some kirkland branded car batteries were very highly rated in consumer reports, but not all models. the sizes for my vehicles weren't highly rated but i still bought it anyways because of the low price. in socal you generally don't need a heavy duty car battery.

Kirkland Super Premium ice cream is great stuff, 2 half gallon boxes for about $8, so it's not super cheap. In my opinion I have not found a name brand that is as good, but I've only found it in vanilla.

drool...

So far, I've found that Kirkland trash bags and tuna are superior to name-brand counterparts.

I have yet to come across anything Kirkland that I thought was sub-par.

FYI, this is not true.

That's correct. Kirkland Vodka is made specifically for Costco by a manufacturer in Cognac, France.

Been happy with everything I've bought with the name, from T-shirts to vodka.

The Kirkland (Mission) Tortilla Strips come in larger bags at a better price and always seem fresher. We go through a few of those bags every month.

Liquid dishwasher detergent rates high in Consumer Reports.

It's made at the same facility that Grey Goose is. I believe on average it is distilled more times than Grey Goose as well. It's not exactly the same - but its definitely a better price point than grey goose. Internally people got in trouble for mentioning these facts.

While I like Costco and Kirkland-label products in general, I haven't done well with Kirkland car batteries. I've had them leak in two different cars within the first couple of years--resulting in a thousand dollars in damage to one of the vehicles. At least Costco handled the damage claim appropriately and paid up when their contract battery manufacturer washed their hands of the matter.

FWIW, both faulty batteries were manufactured by Johnson Controls.

Kirkland undershirts and underwear have been awesome. Relatively cheap compared to name brands, and thicker/more resistant to wear and tear. The whiskey (or is it the Scotch) is very good.

I second the trash bags. They are much cheaper than the name brands and perform very well.

The super-premium dry dog food is amazing. It has quality ingredients (chicken and brown rice are the first two ingredients, if I recall correctly), my dog loves it, and it costs $20 for 20 lbs.

Kirkland coffe is good, milk is good, baby wipes are good, toilet paper is better but still needs some improvement, Kirkland frozen meatballs are good, Kirkland dryer sheets are OK (Bounce is better), Kirkland hand soap is good, Kirkland dishwasher detergent is good, Kirkland paper towels are good, Kirkland olive oil is good (but pricey), Kirkland photo paper is good, Kirkland asperin is good, Kirkland Acetaminophen is good, Kirkland alergy medication is good, etc.

Kirkland diapers are good. They don't leak, when Pampers changed design they started leaking.

I like the Kirkland TP better than Charmin after having tried both. I guess it is a personal choice.

I got this 3-pack countertop / household cleaning wipe package last week. It's the same as the brand name equivalent and I'm happy with it.

Kirkland Water tastes better than some of the other water brands (like Arrowhd)
