The Western Digital Caviar GP line has a variable 5400-7200rpm range. That is, the drive will idle at the slower speed and spin up when necessary, reducing power usage, heat, and noise levels slightly. They also have internals designed to minimize interior turbulence rather than offer maximum possible speed. They're not really slow, but they're not meant to be gamer drives.

thanks for the link p72, it's still a great drive, especially if you need something cool and quiet for a media center pc.

Still, I'm waiting for the cost to inch a little closer to double digits...

I'm wondering if the original (WD10EACS) are all 3 platter now of if there are still 4 platter models in the chain. All of the WD10EADS models are 3 platter.

Heck, I might look at the new 2 platter 640GB model of this drive.
