Too bad nobody makes lightscribe discs anymore. If you find them they cost $400 for 10.

You don't need to use the lightscribe feature.. the burner works great on regular blank discs.

Actually, the older 203 series was considered to be better, but those are discontinued.

Is this a DUAL LAYER Burner?

1. Dumb question, but are ALL burners DUAL LAYER thes days?
2. Where can I get INEXPENSIVE -WHITE- Dual Layer discs?
3. Do I NEED special DVD's for the "Lightscribe" feature? I usually use my Epson Inkjet to print to WHITE DVD's, bit I'd like to try this LightScribe thing

THANKS!

1. Yes, this is dual layer, and yes, all modern burners are dual layer.

2. Not sure what you mean by "white". If you mean printable, which is the proper term, there is no such thing as inexpensive dual layer printable media. It's going to cost you some money. Verbatim is the best brand. Check Meritline.com.

3. Yes, you need special DVDs, and no, they are not cheap.

Yes.

1. Dumb question, but are ALL burners DUAL LAYER thes days?
Yes pretty much. I have yet seen any name brand burner doesn't support DL discs these days.

2. Where can I get INEXPENSIVE -WHITE- Dual Layer discs?
There aren't many printable DL discs in the market. I can quickly think of this one but try it at your own risk - the reviews don't seem stellar with the RiDATA.

3. Do I NEED special DVD's for the "Lightscribe" feature? I usually use my Epson Inkjet to print to WHITE DVD's, bit I'd like to try this LightScribe thing
Yes you need the lightscribe DVD/CD discs to get it done. It's an easy & clean "burn-flip-burn" process and will save you a lot of ink. The LightScribe official website has some good examples and free templates. If you want to understand about the technology, check out the LightScribe Wiki. I recommend Verbatim's lightscribe DVD's though you may not be able to find a lightscribe DL disc in the market.

I got this drive a few weeks ago for the same price, and it works just as well as my S203B, this just includes lightscribe (and 22x speed which is useless for now)
the lightscribe isn't that dark, but that's the technology and not the drive. No coasters yet and I burned about 50 CD-R/DVD+R/DVD+DL.
Lightscribe discs are hard to find at good prices, I got 50pack memorex for 16.99 from fry's a few weeks ago, and they worked great so far.

Missing instruction manual, audio cable, ATA 33 IDE cable, mounting screws
big rip off

Sorry pal. OEM drives don't usually come with mounting screws. And most retail-boxed DVD burners don't even include the audio cable. The electronic instruction manual should be on your CD. Lastly I hope you knew it's a SATA DVD burner that you were purchasing, before you placed the order. Please don't try and connect it with an IDE cable & 4-pin molex power connector - they aren't going to work.

Umm, yeah, this is an OEM drive - they never come with that stuff. If it's worth an extra $50 for you to get a printed manual, $1 cable and a couple of screws, be my guest. For anybody buying this model:

1) Missing instruction manual - get it from the included CD or download it from the web.
2) Missing Audio Cable - Who plays CD's from their PC drives anymore? It takes all of 10 minutes to rip a CD to MP3 or lossless. Even if you choose to play it directly, the CD is digital media and will work fine through the data cable; no need for an audio cable these days.
3) Missing ATA IDE cable - this is a SATA drive so would not have an IDE cable even in a retail kit. Most motherboards come with plenty of extra cables, both SATA and IDE, so you probably have a few lying around unused.
4) Missing mounting screws - there are a lot of modern "screwless" cases so some may not even need screws. And if you do, your case most likely came with a huge box of extra screws when you bought it. Worst case, run down to the local hardware store and get 4 screws for around a quarter.

I have the non-Lightscribe version of this drive and it works great.

Great burner! I have had my Samsung SATA for about a month (from Newegg about the same price ). Only thing I wish it came with was a SATA cable. Had to round one up!
