I've been waiting for this to come down... thanks for the post!

I picked up the DNS-321 for around $100 (AR). I have been quite impressed thus far.

321 vs 323 LINK

321 is a very good option if you don't care about
- network print server.
- BitTorrent download.

At this time 321 is around $130, no tax, free shipping. For about $9 more plus tax I would go with 323.

If dlink comes out with a new rebate on DNS-321, that's a no-brainer.

Thanks for the input about 321.

Does Dlink client supports protocol encrytpion? Some ISP throttls BT traffic...

This is *NOT* a RAID enclosure, it's a dual drive NAS with software RAID running over gigabit ethernet - when people see RAID enclosure, they think an external enclosure with hardware RAID and an eSATA interface to the computer.

That said, it seem to work well and is one of the faster NAS enclosures on the market. Definitely a good deal at $140.

Edit: Just want to clarify, OP changed the title to say "NAS" after this post of mine.

What are you talking about?
This is a NAS enclosure that does mirroring, also known as RAID 1. So the term NAS RAID enclosure is accurate.
And no, it isn't using software raid, that isn't even possible with NAS.

Original thread title said "RAID enclosure" and not NAS. It was changed after I made my post.

As to hardware vs software RAID - hardware RAID is very expensive, just an entry level card can cost as much or more than the cost of this NAS. All inexpensive RAID solutions are software based, and that includes just about all inexpensive NAS that runs a flavor of linux.

Yes. I realized the I had missed 'NAS' from OP. Thanks to your post.

Though most people here know what is DNS-323 but adding NAS would help some.

I don't think hardware RAID mirror is costly add on, almost any damm cheap new motherboard has RAID built in.

There are cheap SATA chipsets that do hardware RAID mirroring, transparently. DriveXpert ports on certain motherboards use those chipsets to do RAID mirroring without drivers. They could have just slapped one of those parts into this enclosure, it wouldn't have cost much. But I do suppose that the RAID is handled in software on the enclosure's chipset. It's not software raid on the host machine, that wouldn't make sense running over the gigabit ethernet.

It's standard Linux/BSD MD Raid, meaning if the box itself dies you can pop the drive in just about any old Linux box and recover your data, rather than having to find a card/motherboard with the same chipset. I've had my DNS-323 for about 8 months and love it; runs ssh/rsync and optware.

I was thinking of buying 1 of this but I ended up of recycling a good old Pentium system and used freenas to build one.

Good find, I'm in for one. I'd been looking at a 343, but this should do the job.

You are going to spend more in electricity in ONE year then this NAS costs.
