Are you a student at FW university? Trying to learn deal hunting? Here is a deal for you...
Microsoft has updated their "DreamSpark" offerings. If you don't know, DreamSpark is Microsoft's area for giving free software to students. Previously, DreamSpark offered Windows Server 2003 for free. However, they have recently updated that to offer Windows Server 2008.
Server 2008 is slightly newer than Vista and would be acceptable as a server (obviously) or as a lighter weight gaming/ desktop platform than Vista. By default, a lot of the bloat that was in Vista is disabled by default in Server 2008. However, if you want, Server 2008 can basically be transformed into full featured Vista. So if want to install legit Windows on another machine, give this a look.
All you have to do is confirm you're a student, DreamSpark also offers other free software like Visual Studio 2008 Professional and SQL Server 2008.
Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition Expression Studio 2 (includes Web, Blend, Media and Design) SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition Edit by Moderator: Thank you for participating in the forums. However, this topic has been covered in a recent post Here.
Yes, there is an issue with linking. I took the link down. Copy paste will work for now. I have asked mods to look into linking. Oh yeah, thanks wasben for Red just because you could not figure out a link issue.

FYI
What do I need in order to access, download, and use the Microsoft software I get on DreamSpark? Only what you probably already have:
* A PC with a Windows OS * An Internet connection (broadband suggested) * An Internet browser * A Windows Live ID account
Your student ID credentials (e.g. username and password) provided by your school or organization that can verify that you are a student—in most cases this is your college/university or a commercial student identity provider.

Fatwallet University isn't on the list. Can anyone provide pointers on how to get through the verification?
If you school is not in the list, you can verify your student status through JourneyEd. You will need to send in a digital copy of your schedule or student id.

can you get the 64bit(download manager is downloading the x86 version)? Or can I just download the trial version from the MS website and use the key that I got from the dreamspark?

You do realize that if you aren't a student then this is just as illegal as downloading a pirated copy off of bittorrent, right?
You also realize that their TOS are that you must stop using the license and purchase a full license once you graduate.
Great deal but I get annoyed at the people who always talk about how immoral pirating is but yet will try to claim this is a loophole when in reality it's just as illegal.

I don't think they were weighing in on morality or legality, nor am I; I think they just meant if you want to install a copy of Windows that won't be disabled or crippled by copy protection.
I'm a little slow - some might say I'm "special" - but I couldn't get them to give me the software. I was trying to be honest and I chose "non-profit" (which is true). this is what they sent me: email said: We appreciate your recent Microsoft DreamSpark order. EDIT Just got an eMail, he wanted $40 I wittled it down to $20What the heck is wrong with you people?! If you don't qualify for the deal, move on! This the the epitome of RDMustang1's post - if you're going to cheat to get in on the deal you might as well steal/pirate/etc a copy.
Kudos to the DreamSpark verification system in place. I just hope they can keep out the liars and cheaters so that those that actually qualify can participate in the offer.
Green for you OP. Cant say the same for those that cheat the system just to get what s/he wants.

True that... Some people are more liberal at taking advantage of these deals than they should be.
I believe the licensing of the product also prohibits you from hosting a commercial web site to the public. It really can only be used for learning purposes.

I'll probably never have time to use it. I have server 2003 and visual basic 2003 and have never used either. I want to learn but never have time. In the off chance that I get time, it would be cool to have the latest. My community's non-profit could really benefit from a well designed website. After I learn to use it, I may go ahead and buy it but it would be nice to have it.

So I guess Harvard isn't a credited institution? Heck even Bill Gates went to Harvard.
hm, my UCSD account seems to be active 5 years after graduation. Don't think I wanna piss off M-soft though, so I'll just pass. XP is still going strong for me.
Wonder how long it'll take for these to show up on BT.

It doesn't matter whether your school's on the list or not! That just simplifies the log in process. If you can get verified via JourneyEd, there's no problem. I got the email that OrangeSpot quoted, replied back to the address they gave with a copy of my enrollment verification from the National Student Clearinghouse, and I was in within 24 hours. If you log in to your student account at your school, chances are you can find a document that meets their criteria. Of course, the crappy part about actually being a student means that I can't actually download any of these until next week because I managed to blow my whole weekly allotted bandwidth streaming the Denver/Tampa Bay game Sunday afternoon, LOL.
My question is, how is this post not incredibly old? I caught one to this site on Friday or so, and it was itself locked as being a repost.
I just sent in a screenshot of my online schedule. I hope that's good enough for them. I did it through the Journey Ed website. This is pretty awesome! I have a coding project for my engineering class, and I was planning on using Blue J. I'm so happy that I can actually have a good compiler/debugger now!
