Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Silver 10 MP 3.0" 230K LCD 4X Optical Zoom 28mm DC $269 shipped after email code (EMCBAAHCB $30 off Exp 10/13) @Newegg >> Free 2GB SD card w/ purchase, while supplies last

linked at Newegg - remember fatcash

this replaces the 870IS, which I own, and am very happy with. great for video @ 640 X 480 - only limited by size of card. it fits easily in pocket, or purse, I found Lithium Ion battery on eBay for under $10.

Where the SD870 offered Motion JPEG AVI movies, the Canon SD880 opts for H.264 MOV instead - a newer format which generally offers significantly improved compression (and hence smaller file sizes) for equivalent video quality. As with the previous camera, sound is recorded along with movie clips. - I can't find anything out about whether you can zoom during movie recording with the 880, I can with my 870.

Had the 870, gave it to sister. Was ready to pull the trigger at CC, this comes out better. Thanks OP!

It's really a good deal.
Heard quite a few good feedback on the SD880.
So if you are thinking about getting a new camera, consider this.

The 28mm wide angle lens makes this one stand out from the rest of the crowd of point and shoots. It is especially handy if you do a lot of scenery or group shots. Most P&Ss only go down to a 35mm wide angle which is not enough in the aforementioned cases.

I have the canon 10MP one that's $189 and about as good as this one. This isn't a hot deal but a good camera nonetheless.

does yours have image stabilization, a 3 in. LCD, 4X optical zoom, zoom while recording movies, and ultra-compact size? This price is at least $20 less than others on the "compare prices" listings.

Yes to everyting except the screen is 2.5" and it has a viewfinder:

It takes amazing photos. I can even get within a foot of someone and take a photo with the flash on and it doesn't come out washed out. It's a very smart camera. Currently $199 on Newegg and it shows up on Dell's site from time to time with a coupon.

but yours is not a $300 retail camera, being sold for $270, a 10% savings?

Besides the wider lens, how much better would this camera be than an SD850 IS? Also how is it any different than the SD870 IS since it also had a 28mm lens?

What cawman said.
Also, the average person doesn't need to pay attention to the MP anymore anyway. It's marketing hype. Do you personally need 10MP pictures? Plus it seems the higher the MP has gotten over the years, the worse the picture quality has gotten.

I don't think we are connecting here. Mine cost $189. I'm just saying this model is comparable. With yours you get the 4X zoom instead of 3X, but mine has a viewfinder, better flash and the volume goes up to 11!

I think the wide angle is the expensive part(?). However this camera (880) also has the motion tracking auto ISO. Neat feature (prob not worth anything) is when taking self timer photos, the camera waits until a new face enters the frame and then takes a photo 2 seconds later.

wide angle is the deal. The rest is just lame gimmicks.

which is better for close ups?

I want to say I've got the 850IS, picked it up last year around BF(for $200 from Newegg shipped to my door). I've been very satisfied. I'm too lazy to find the article, but I've read with these small form cameras the larger mega-pixel counts actual degrade the picture quality.

I agree. I have a Canon S500 (I believe came out in 2004). Has 5MP but has larger 1.8/1 CCD Sensor.

I just bought a Canon SD770 IS and I must say, the S500 takes better pictures

Exactly.

I haven't seen any reviews of this camera - I'm guessing image quality won't be much of improvement over the SD870IS.

I own the SD870 IS and I think that's a much better deal at $230 at buydig or $231 at Amazon. The SD870 IS can run CHDK hacked firmware you put on your SD card giving you RAW capability and much more control.

Side-by-side (very little difference): http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_s d870is%2Ccanon_sd880is&show=all

I'm not saying this is the best camera for $270 - I'm just saying for this camera, the price is a good deal - hot or not, I don't know.

that deal is now dead. I think that may have been a pricing error - $70 off a newly introduced camera?
