This is a great deal. It was $1,918 about 20 minutes ago before rebate, and now $1,594 before rebate. Yes, we all know new systems came out, but some people don't care about a similar system with a glossy-ONLY display.
Red....nice computer, and a decent price, but it's only natural that the previous gen drops significantly...and I think finding them for this price is gonna be about par for the course (especially since as pointed out, you can already get a refurb from Apple for almost $100 less after rebate...$250 less before rebate).
RobL said: I'm a big Mac fanboy (my dogs name is Macs) but beware that there may be a serious NVIDEA card failure issue with this computer. They might exchange your faulty one with the new macbook if it dies! ( well, within warranty ) --- Edit: What I don't like about the old ones are the plastic trimming on the edges that kinda warp. Anyone know if it's still a big hassle to replace the HDD on the new macbook pros?
These lappies are on clearance at the Apple Education Store for $1399 new ($1349 for the refurbs), + tax (for some), and free shipping. No rebate hassles. In addition, Discover Card offers 5% CashBack through a link on their web site.
OP, thanks for posting this, but the Amazon deal is not a smoking hot deal. It IS a great price for this laptop. Get it while you can.
One more thing. Buying from the Apple Education store gets you a huge discount on Adobe software.

This is a great deal on a great system. It's a very nice laptop for a MacBook price!

No one said that you said he "missed something" but when you add nothing and just restate what's already been stated, it's a reasonable inference that you missed it. Go troll elsewhere.

You have to have educational discount for these prices.

Yes, as I mentioned, the refurbs are $1,349.
But the new 2.4GHz MacBook Pros are $1,599 and NOT $1,399 (which would really be a smoking hot deal!)...
go fix your brain dude....price dropped b/c it is previous gen, not b/c it is in the title, "reasonable inference" -lol

How do you see the 2.4Ghz MacBook Pros to be $1,599. Even with student discount, it's still at 1,899
What's wrong with Dell or Gateway or Acer when you can get for under $300!

If you click on Special Deals - Clearance, they have the 2.4GHz refurbs for $1349 and the 2.4GHz old model for $1599 (both previous generation... when I said "new" I meant previous generation non-refurb).
actually I do see the clearance 2.4 pro at 1399 right now in the Apple Store. That's a very good deal. I've been anxiously awaiting today's announcement and was sorta hoping for a little lower price point on the new macbooks - so now I'm looking at these last gen pros. They seem to be a very good deal. I'm looking to replace a g3 ibook that we use for travel. I'm a pc user primarily but I do like os x and the aesthetics of the apple products (just not so much the price)

Show me a new 15" Dell, Gateway, or Acer laptop for under $300 and I'm buying 50 of them.
Well there was that Gateway for $325 at BB a few weeks back. Pretty much the same specs as the Macbook pro except for a 2.0Ghz CPU and lower screen resolution. Same 8600M with 512MB and it included 4GB of RAM. The CPU on the Gateway is also upgradable so people have been plopping in cheap high end CPUs off of eBay. Even now you can get them for $600 on eBay. So is this Macbook pro worth $900 more than that just for the Apple logo?
I don't see a gateway for 325 - I see one with similar specs you are listing for 650 - care to link the old thread so I can look it over - I'm sorta interested now. N/M - I found it in expired deals.

Where are you seeing this?
The only clearance 2.4GHz MacBook Pro I see is $1599.
OMFGWTF said: Oh yea, all this is coming from a all PC guy. I'm not saying this apple deal is a good deal, but your comparisons are way off. Now show me a new 15" Dell, Gateway, or Acer laptop for under $300 without the YMMV where I can actually get in on the deal. Without me having to live in a certain area and depending on the CSR to take the coupon or not.
Did you miss the part where I said that you can buy them off of eBay for $900 less. What's YMMV about that?

Yes, make sure you are covered if you buy one of these. Either the rip off Applecare or an extended warranty from someone else, but make sure you are covered. Scanning Mac Forums you will find plenty of people that had their GPU crap out a month or two after the regular warranty expired. I should note that Apple has recently announced that they will cover this GPU failure for year 2.

There is my cart - but I did notice I am in the education store - but I thought it typically didn't affect the price of clearance stuff.
here is the link to where it brings up 1399 for me:

Sometimes it's really entertaining to imagine people laughing out loud when they type "LOL" to things thing clearly do not necessitate hilarious laughter. I often wonder where they are, who hears them laughing, and what those people think of their innane laughter.

Yes,that can be a decent deal except for a few things to be taken into account:
1) If you buy from a vendor and use the right credit card, you can double the 1 year warranty for no extra cost. This is worth at least $100. Not sure that you can get that coverage if you pay with PayPal. Better call your CC company and ask 2) There are better deals out there than Amazon, see this. In addition to the laptop you can get some goodies for free: Fusion, Paralels, and the usual smattering of AV/firewall crap if you need/want them; $100 off a printer; free case --- more than one if you are so inclined. But do skip the outrageously overpriced memory upgrade --- Newegg will sell you the same thing for $50 instead of $150.
When you add it all up, you come out ahead by foregoing the Live.com deal. Now for those that want the latest gen, it does make sense to pay slightly more at JR.com and get the live.com 7.5% CashBack. The net price of $1810 plus goodies is hard to beat.
