well - my question to you guys is do you think this previous gen pro at 1399 is a better deal than the new gen macbook at 1299. I am replacing an ibook g3 that is primarily used for travel and maintaining familiarization with the os and certain programs. I'm not planning on it being a daily use machine - but... my wife might like it enough to make it her new main pc - which hardly even gets daily use now haha (she's not a big home computer user - uses one too much at work I guess...) I'm not interested in status symbol - just like to have a mac around (I'm a college art instructor and sometimes have to teach/interact with mac stuff so I like to be familiar and relatively up-to-date with it)

I am not a technical person, "is it difficult to add more RAM to Mac Pro?"

Anyone know if it's still a big hassle to replace the HDD on the new macbook pros?

If you are talking about new MBP released today, Apple made HDD replacement quite easy.

No it is easy.
Check the details here

This thread is about the MacBook Pro (the Mac Pro being an entirely different product line.)
However the end result is the same; It is simple to add RAM to either.

I would say that the passage of time would have a serious impact on the resale value of these older laptops...

Who buys a 3 year old laptop?

rbraden said:mlgbwk said:exactly, new gen came out, that's why price dropped.

did I say he missed it in the title...at all?

bunch of dumba$$ learn to read

This is a great deal on a great system. It's a very nice laptop for a MacBook price!

No one said that you said he "missed something" but when you add nothing and just restate what's already been stated, it's a reasonable inference that you missed it. Go troll elsewhere.

Sometimes it's really entertaining to imagine people laughing out loud when they type "LOL" to things thing clearly do not necessitate hilarious laughter. I often wonder where they are, who hears them laughing, and what those people think of their innane laughter.

If a nerd LOLs in the forest and no one is there to hear him/her/it.....

Yes, make sure you are covered if you buy one of these. Either the rip off Applecare or an extended warranty from someone else, but make sure you are covered. Scanning Mac Forums you will find plenty of people that had their GPU crap out a month or two after the regular warranty expired. I should note that Apple has recently announced that they will cover this GPU failure for year 2.

just use an AMEX card

What's wrong with Dell or Gateway or Acer when you can get for under $300!

Show me a new 15" Dell, Gateway, or Acer laptop for under $300 and I'm buying 50 of them.

Well there was that Gateway for $325 at BB a few weeks back. Pretty much the same specs as the Macbook pro except for a 2.0Ghz CPU and lower screen resolution. Same 8600M with 512MB and it included 4GB of RAM. The CPU on the Gateway is also upgradable so people have been plopping in cheap high end CPUs off of eBay. Even now you can get them for $600 on eBay. So is this Macbook pro worth $900 more than that just for the Apple logo?

Hmm...lets see here: Comparing Apples to Gateways are already like comparing apples to oranges.

1) MBP has a T8400 CPU vs a T5750 for the gateway...big difference.
2) MBP has a 8600GT vs a ATI HD 2600 for the gateway...big difference.
3) Gateway deal involved using a coupon in a B&M store where YMMV was huge in terms of pricing and stock and coupon usage.
4) MBP is thinner, lighter, aluminum compared to plastic on the gateway.

Oh yea, all this is coming from a all PC guy. I'm not saying this apple deal is a good deal, but your comparisons are way off. Now show me a new 15" Dell, Gateway, or Acer laptop for under $300 without the YMMV where I can actually get in on the deal. Without me having to live in a certain area and depending on the CSR to take the coupon or not.

agreed

perfect comparisons between Macs and PCs are near impossible. its difficult to find a PC laptop that has:

  • same or better thickness
  • built in camera
  • magsafe or similar power adapter technology
  • metal exterior

So theres no way you can make an apples to apples comparison

Who buys a 3 year old laptop?

Apple products hold their value very well over the long run.

I like Apple's OS and their laptops.

Having said that, I can't justify paying $814 more for an Apple notebook versus the Lenovo T61 I'm using right now, with a Penryn T8100 Core2 Duo and 3GB of RAM that I paid $630 for, including tax.

Edit - ewww. No FireWire port on this Apple???

alert mods

It's true, the Nvidia chips have a high failure rate due to packaging issues. Google for more info.

Not sure I'd call this "smoking hot". Just "hot" seems more accurate.

alert mods

Great deal, I get to spend an extra $700 - 900 bucks for a rather normal machine.......

sorry apple, Wintel or doorbell, I am not dropping that much for something that offer little more than a badge.

But hey if it makes you feel good go for it.

I am sticking to the hot deals.

smoking hot lol

its a Mac

WilliamG said:This is a great deal. It was $1,918 about 20 minutes ago before rebate, and now $1,594 before rebate. Yes, we all know new systems came out, but some people don't care about a similar system with a glossy-ONLY display.

Anyway, this is a great price!

MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz

alert mods

nevermind

alert mods

Okay, I was at macrumors and the Apple loyalists are pretty livid that the display on this is not compatible with Mac Pros, has no FireWire port and no matte screen option.

Sorry everyone - I didn't realize this was the prior gen, so disregard the above comments. It does have all of these things.

alert mods

It appears to have both a FireWire 400 and a FireWire 800 port.

still a MAC

alert mods

As mentioned earlier in thread this is previous generation so do not confuse new generation specs to this model such as no firewire, no matte screen etc.... these comments are about new generation macs as announced yesterday. [and in unboxing reports some are saying firewire is on the new macbook pros.]

Expensive? yes
Do I want one? yes
Will I get one? Maybe if I can figure it into my budget
