Localphone.com just reduced their price, specially India rate is 3.9 cents per minute. I tried this , looks good to me. You will get direct number upto 10 phone numbers and using local number upto 50 numbers after that.
If you happen to sign up and use it, please give the feedback for other FW folks here.
Updated price: India rate is reduced to 3.3 cents.
Another update: India rate is reduced to 2.9 cents on 2/13/09.
Another update: India rate is reduced to 2.5 cents on 7/10/09.
Another update: India rate is reduced to 1.8 cents on mobile),2 cents on major cities & 2.2 cents elsewhere on 10/06/09.
Looks good but I would be reluctant to try it without looking at other people's experience first.

It's kind of idea which Jaxtr running for some time, but with trueroots giving BOGO their price comes up to 3.5 c/min, I think that's the best deal at present to call India.

Jaxtr is about 4c/min with premium membership. A useful backup for weekend mornings when Trueroots fails to connect. Let's see how this new service pans out.
sekharnet said: The best deal I know to India is on Lingo.com Its 2.9c if U signup for a voip plan for 31.00/month (free US/Canada).
Normally voip plan cost abut 14.99 per month, why to pay extra sixteen dollar when you can have 410 minutes for that price.
I can not compare this with jaxtr, that really did not work for me, it's set up is very easy and you can get free portal for web-dialing as well.

Or you can try TeleBlend for $49.95 a month unlimited to India. That seems like an even better deal than paying 2.9c.

My review of localphone:
I signed up for the $5 calling card and I feel it is the best service I ever got. What the web site does is it gives a local phone number (US local number) for each of your international number. Not only that, based on your local city selection, it will give phone numbers with that area code. For example, if you select San Jose as your city, it will give all your international contacts 408 numbers. For example, your brother overseas will get a 408 number. Your sister overseas will get another 408 number. The greatest benefit is now, you can directly call that local number and it will terminate the call to the international number the number is mapped to. I think it is really cool. You can just store this local phone number in your phone address book, and call them directly with one click. With most other companies (I was using Pingo earlier) you have to first call the company number and then select another number to call the international number. Essentially it made a two-hop call a one-hop. call. Its a great convenience. In some phones, you can even assign short cuts to address book entries. For example, you can configure your phone such that if you press and hold number 6, then it will call your brother's local number, for example.
In the web site you can manage all your international numbers and local numbers. You simply store these numbers in your address book. I think there is some limit on the numbers you select. The call quality was also very good. When I called my international parties, they said it was very clear. Price is also cheaper. I would save it is very good and it is very convenient. Worth giving it a try. I am also a little excited about unlimited calling provided by Teleblend, but not sure how the service is. Would be nice if anyone can share experience with Teleblend.
Note I am not associated with localphone in anyway. Just a happy customer. I think it definitely deserves a try.

This is a very good explanation. Is there any monthly fee on this? I checked their website, it says we can upgrade to VOIP. Not sure what does that mean. Any idea?

It appears to say: "no contracts or monthly fees, and no connection or service charges."
I wonder if there is an expiration date...

Just a word of caution- Not all phone numbers in 408 area code will be local to you. Call your local phone service provider first to check if the number is local to you or not.
Wish I saw this thread before. I just tried it for a call to a cellphone in Ukraine; 9 cents per minute, which is 1/2 of what I could find anywhere else.
OP should take "India" out of the title and replace it with "worldwide" or something, as India is probably not relevant to most international callers. That's probably why I ignored the thread.
LocalPhone dropped it to 3.3 cents now. Here's from the CEO: ============================================================ I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that the world economy has taken a hit lately, and people are looking to cut costs wherever they can. The good news is that thanks to your continued support Localphone is in a stronger position to negotiate with our suppliers, and we've managed to obtain a reduced rate for our calls to India; savings we are passing on to you.
Effective immediately our new rate to both landlines and mobiles in India will be just 3.3c per minute: India Call Rates
Our Long-Term Commitment to Value We have seen some companies offer a promotional rate over the past month at a price we feel they cannot sustain in the future. I believe our customers will not fall for short-term gimmicks and appreciate our consistently low rates and dependable, quality routes.
This is our new rate going forward and we hope to only reduce it further as our service grows.
No Compromise on Quality It is also important to note that this reduction is the result of renegotiating with our existing partners in India who we will continue to work with. Localphone has a direct digital connection to the telephone network in India and you can expect to experience the same high quality calls you're used to receiving from Localphone.
As always we'd love to hear your suggestions so please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any thoughts about this reduction or any other aspect of the Localphone service.
Best wishes and a Happy Republic Day, Paul Cusack, CEO. Localphone.com
Hot on the heels of our recent price reduction (Jan 26th - "New Recession Busting Rates to Call India") I am pleased to announce yet another drop in the cost of calling India. Effective immediately our new rate to India landlines and mobiles is a market-leading 2.9c per minute.
This is not just a short-term gimmick or promotion, and there are no terms, hidden fees, or minimum top-ups; just low rates and a great quality, direct route to India.
Thanks to the enthusiastic response to our most recent round of price drops we have already been able to return to our suppliers and negotiate a better rate; savings we are passing straight on to you.
Don't forget; the longer you call, and the more friends you recommend, the stronger our position to negotiate even better rates on your behalf. I'd like to thank you once again on behalf of everybody at Localphone for your continued loyalty and support.
Best wishes, Paul Cusack, CEO. Localphone.com

My experience:-
I started using localphone.com about 2 months back, before that I was using reliance and Trueroots (when they had BOGO). Since using localphone.com I completely switched to them. The call quality is unmatched and the calls are connected in first attempt. I had below problems:-
1) Recharging on there website is not instantaneous. I switch to "auto top off" which recharges by 10$ whenever the account balance is below 5$. Although I don't like anything like "Auto pay or Auto Carge" but I gave it a try, it seems to be working fine.
2) Sometimes I have seen call disconnect after 40-50 minutes of talking. This is good as my wife talks quiet a lot. The problem is, one click gets the call connected again.
Overall I'm very happy and don't plan to look around for other alternatives.
If you have digital phone from Time Warner Cable you can pay an extra $19.99 a month for unlimited international calls (1,000 max.) I have had it for a while now it was a maximum of 3,000 minutes a few months back. if you are curious I live in New York City I don't know if it is offered in other areas.
have you guys used Rebtel? They seem to have better voice quality and I guess they are now also matching the rates to localphone.com. 2.9c/min (promotional for 2 months!) Wohoo!! Bye bye relianceindiacall and Airtel!

Freinds, localphone call quality is good. But you cannot use it if you do not have all over US calling facility, or else you have to use your cell phone air time. Recently I called to my freind in Canada, the call dropped after 5 min, and then I didn't able to connect to any localphone numbers, some how it was hang. When I checked the usage, it was showing 2 hours and charged 84 cent instead of 4 cent. I tried to reach customer service by phone and also send eamil. But till now nobody addressed the issue from LocalPhone. It looks like there is no customer service. Innitially you will think you are getting a good quality phone service in cheap rate, but ultimately you will end up paying much more. Be aware, Thanks Swadesh.

another issue with local phone is drop calls and no customer service...I was using it but now moved to yupee phone, its pretty good....
yupeephone.com give 120 min and another thing, if drop calls which could be below 25 sec is not calculated ...
ActionVoip has rate of 1.1cent/min landline & 1.6cents/min to mobile
SmartVoip has rate of 1.2cent/min to both landline & Mobile
Gtalk has rate of 2.6cent/min to both landline and mobile and they have some great speed dial and dedicated local number maping to indian phone numbers. You can get an extra $2 credit by using promo code NBOYU8
Localphone reduced rates to 2.5c per minute, due to Actionvoip or betamax guys jerking us around it can be good backup with local mapping.

Just an FYI...I have been using localphone for quite a while. Connectivity and call quality was excellent when the rate was 2.9c. Ever since the rate became 2.5, service isnt as good. They must have bought bulk minutes from a relatively inferior provider.

I tried almost everything and finally settled for Vonage "Unlimited" call to anywhere (including 60 countries) for $24.99 per month. Couldn't be happier. No need for any rate chasing etc. I just keep some change in my gTalk/Airtel/Reliance if I need to call from my mobile.
