The built in CPU and DDR2 memory manage the backups so your system doesn't have to. They also let you access the data remotely over an internet connection without having to have any of the computers on your network turned on.

Reviews are mixed, but great price - starts at $200 new, most issues seem to be related to more advanced features. Interesting that eCost has a SquareTrade link in the post. Would seriously consider if I was still in the market for NAS.
Great deal, but shipping costs are high. Any free shipping coupons out there? Also, can a printer be hooked up to the USB port (i.e. use the drive as a print server as well)?
This is no speed demon, but is a very flexible box that can be used for NAS or a variety of low-powered server needs. There are free firmwares out there that allow you to do a lot more than the stock box:
Awesome - in for 2! I needed storage for my hacked appletv and was considering a D-Link DNS-323 which doesn't come with drives and is ~$140 alone. I see the extra terabyte as a bonus, plus no rebates to mess with. If the drives go bad, oh well

I just got the linkstation live from e-bay. Kept the stock firmware, but 'opened' it up to allow ssh. Installed rtorrent (command-line torrent client) and nzbget (command-line newsgroup client). Works perfectly as a downloading machine. Linkstation Pro's do not have DLNA support, but I've found the DLNA support on the Linkstation Live's to be flaky at best. In the end, I just disabled it because it was churning the hard drive even when I wasn't accessing it.
Getting gigabit speeds is another issue. With a gigabit router, the best speed I've been able to get is 160Mbps. This is even after playing around with the jumbo frame settings (on both the pc and the linkstation).
Overall, an excellent little device. It draws less than 20W, so I don't feel bad about leaving it on for extended amounts of time.
