CNN says you can get a Tmobile G1 for $148.88 with a savings of $31.11 starting tomorrow at WalMart. Its still a 2 year contract and yes upgrade customers are also eligible.
Linky

Tmobile let me sign one year contract to buy G1 phone for $299 with $18.88 upgrade fee.Is that fair??

anyone know if data plan can be cancel?

@yzhu0312
Tmobile charged you an extra $150 for doing it a one year contract. Early termination fees are $175 I believe. For $25 extra you can terminate when ever you want. Also, they have pro rated termination fees now, which means after an year, you can terminate the contract by paying $175/2 = $87.50. Just my 2c...

Nice find! Thanks OP. Will have to check it out during the holidays.

phone looks like crap. the only good thing with G1 is the breadcrumbz app and google earth, both of which will be available on iPhone in firmware 2.2. and dont give me that open source crap because 1) you can jailbreak your iphone and 2) even not jailbroken, the apps available on the iphone are just as good as G1 ones

gimme the red

I like Google but not for a phone, I hear it's bulky and heavy... iPhone baby

Google (Android) is the software in the phone, not the phone itself.

nice software
piece of crap hardware

nevertheless, still a good heads up, friends of mine paid full price only to find out about the costco deal 2 days later

Nice deal. Already picked up the phone and I think it's great phone.

dealkk, you need the data plan for the phone to work. Everytime, you turn on the phone, it requires you to login to your google account.

This got to be annoying.

I usually don't turn off the phone unless I need to pull the sim card so it's not a nuisance at all.

I don't know much about the phone, but I do know that it's butt ugly.

I have it and it's actually pretty amazing. It's got a very good keyboard, and the Google apps are implemented really well. I get 3G in my city, and GPS works well.
Actually, the only bad thing about it is a crappy camera (which needs motion compensation really badly, the photos are blurry as a rule).

You don't know what you're talking about. There is no "Google Earth," but it does have "Google Maps." Breadcrumbz is also not an included application.

It does not need to be jailbroken. There is an abundance of 3rd party applications, and there will only be more.

Look, just because you bought an iPhone and need to justify the $300-$500 you spent on it to feel good about your purchase, does not mean that iPhone is truly superior. If your mind was just a little bit more open, you'd see that G1 is every bit as good. And yes, I own an iPhone too.

This statement is false. The phone logs you in automatically.

I stand corrected. I haven't turned off my phone since I turned it on for the first time.

You don't have to login every time if you stop data sync option in settings. Then it will never ask you for gmail password unless you decide to turn on the sync feature.

It says for existing customers, but I'm willing to bet that we won't get it for the price WalMart is advertising it for. Good deal nonetheless.

i'm surprised not a lot of ppl on fatwallet have this phone. the barcode scanner is pretty sweet - it looks for the lowest price for the product scanned.

I got one at the preorder rate for 179.99 i kinda feel ripped.

the phone is good not Great yet. im sure it will be getting improvements throughout since it has a open system.

SK user will be sadden by the AIM performance.

To those who say "there will be more apps", consider this - the Android SDK has been available since Nov 2007. One year later, their app store opens with 60 apps. iPhone SDK was available since March 2008, and when Apple App Store opens, there were 500 apps(most developers couldn't join the program until much later), and now 5000+.

When developers consider which platform to develop for, whether the platform is "open" has nothing to do with the decision. The only motive is $. Developers will develop for the platform which brings them the most income for the least work. That's why there are much more Windows apps than Mac, and much more iPhone apps than Android.

Now, when the iPhone software gets too crowded, some developers will look at other platforms like Android, WM, Blackberry and Symbian. However, again, whether the platform is open has nothing to do with the decision. I would say most developers would do WM first since the existing market is much larger. Actually, there are already thousands of WM software out there, everyone's just waiting for MS's version of the App Store (Skymart).

For T-Mobile users, this is still a good deal if you want Android, so I am giving the OP a green. I can understand some people's desire to stay with a carrier. Often, one location works great for one TMo but not for ATT (also there are spots great for ATT but not Tmo), and G1 is the best phone for people who want third party apps, since neither MS's Skymarket nor Blackberry's App Store are available yet.

Uh.. has ANY phone before the G1 actually USED android? Comparing the number of iphone to Android apps is the stupidest comparison a person could make. Google released the android sdk BEFORE a phone even used it. Apple was behind the curve, and released their SDK LONG after the phones had been out.

It's like trying to sell accessories before something even comes out. Google was being pro-active and trying to get development started. Apple was reactive. Not till there were already millions sold did they release the sdk. There's no question the iphone will have more apps than the G1, the least you can do is make an equal comparison though.

And sorry, but being "open" certainly matters (whether you think so or not). While the Apple sdk is "free.." You can't actually distribute your app without paying a fee. There's the catch.

need a white one.

I called and told them I wanted to cancel my service so I can get an Iphone since I couldn't get a discount on the G1. They then just gave it to me for $179.99, with a 2 yr extension of course, but I haven't even passed the one yr mark of my previous 2 yr contract. More specifically, I told them that I wanted to cancel because they raised the text messaging fees. Obviously, I am a few months too late for that. But the rep asked if there was any other reasons for the termination, that's when I told them about the phone issue. He even gave the 2 other lines on my family plan free phones (not G1) as well.

Good deal OP for those tied up to tmobile and not wanting an unlocked Iphone so green for you. However there is no question as to which phone is superior.

Iphone = Intuitive operation and simplicity. All rest is just nonsense. You can put 3G GPS GPRS 4G 5G 24MP camera toaster etc on a phone with bad interface or form factor (make it as big as the toaster) and you get nothing.

Iphone's novelty is not the GPS or the 3g or the wireless. It is just how simple it is to operate it with ONE HAND, using a unified way: TOUCH the screen

G1 is confused. I ll use the keyboard, no wait I ll use the trackball, no wait I ll use the buttons...

G1 is a great phone by all means, just not nearly as practical as an iphone.

I will not get the G1 until it can be tethered to a PC for Internet access, runs slingplayer, runs MS Exchange and ActiveSync with Outlook.

Are you for real? I applaud you for using Iphone with one hand, but confusing about keybard trackball, and buttons? Man you must have a hard time geting on fatwallet with your computer:

I'll use the keyboard, no wait i'll use the mouse....now should i hit enter or left click with my mouse?
Should I use the scroll button or page up / down...

you confused about that too?

Hmm, that can't be it. I have automatic sync on and have never had to re-login, even though I turned off my phone a number of times. There must have been a "remember me" checkbox or something during the setup that I enabled.

i hate it when they require you to get the data plan

Any chance Google and Verizon will team to make a phone?

Costco deal...you mean, Wally World, right?

Sounds like you are a self proclaimed numbskull who doesn't want choices or an open platform. Hence your favoritism towards Apple products

different strokes for diff folks

Agreed, well with the tethering anyway. What were they thinking releasing a phone like this that can not be tethered to a PC for internet access. Stuck with my Tmobile Dash for now I guess.

slingster said: I will not get the G1 until it can be tethered to a PC for Internet access, runs slingplayer, runs MS Exchange and ActiveSync with Outlook.

I can sympathize. A lot of functionality will come over time. If you can't wait for it, by all means don't buy this phone folks. The iphone has been out for a while now, so is it any surprise it has a big headstart? Nope. The iphone is a good phone, but the G1 is clearly aimed at a different market now. It's a linux based OS, so I imagine porting existing software shouldn't be too difficult over time, which is a huge plus for devs.

Google has much bigger plans than just one lousy phone. They're trying to make this a quasi-open source mobile OS for use by many phone manufacturers. Competition for WM mainly.

If you don't like the phone, skip over the thread.. just don't be a troll. You're getting what you pay for at this price with the expectations of a lot of software to show up in the hopefully not too distant future.

I like my iphone 3g but for those who want something else this is not a bad phone. It is open for developers and you can download a lot of applications on them but they do not have 3G service everywhere for the phones kind of like AT and T.
