jdopple said:Would love to get this but I've been running Corsair 3200 1GB at 235 Mhz & 2.5 CAS (effective 470 mhz) and I know this stuff is not likely to clock anything like that.

So I would take a big performance hit in memory speed, might not be worth the change.
Relative performance of more RAM vs less but faster RAM depends highly on the work load. Remember, paging to the hard drive (virtual memory thrashing) takes thousands of CPU cycles. If your app(s) exceed your physical memory, the penalty of swapping is far, FAR worse than a tiny hit in CAS latency. With a lower amount of faster RAM, you might get better peak performance, but the average throughput may suffer alot due to intermittent disk thrashing.

I'm aware of that. Two things. 470 vs 400 or 410 is a big difference in performance. I'm not sure how 'real world' it is, but almost 20% is nothing to sneeze at or give up.

I actually do use quite a bit of memory, but thrashing is not a big problem. And I believe XP will use that swapfile even if I go from 1 to 2 meg, just not as often.

You mean 1 to 2 Gigs? It's not a 20% diff in performance, the CPU cache absorbs 95-99% of memory accesses, so the overall performance diff is 0.1 - 2%. Again, dependent on work load, but that's a very common figure.

Went to pickup a pair in Irving Texas but in store price was $54.99. Had sales buy lookup online and he confirmed it is the same item number but could not adjust price. I used a terminal in the store to order online with in store pickup to get it for $49.99. What a screwed up policy. Took they 15 minutes to figure out where the order was using their point of sale system from the 1970's. Good deal even with the hassle factor.

Thanks OP scored one to replace my 2x 256MB corsairs that I've been running since the dark ages.

I agree with the OC part for the RAM. I am also skeptical about the OC ability of this particular set. I currently have Corsair at 275 Mhz (Effective 550 MHZ.) which really gives quite a boost to the system compared to 400 MHZ.

By the way, any links available regarding OC this set?

The boost is more than just memory/CPU performance. How's your HD? Wink.

HD is a 500 GB Seagate w/ 16 MB cache, i believe its a 7200.10 but quiet enough that i dont hear it spinning.Computer Specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Rev. E4 @ 2.2 GHZ, OC to 2.75 GHZ, with Muti set at 10x
Corsair CMX512-3200C2PRO (1 GB total), OC to 275 MHZ (Effective 550 MHZ); OC's to 300 MHZ
MoBo - Asus A8R32-MVP deluxe, with some kind of AMD chipset, lol
Ati video card - HD 3850 w/ 512 MB DDR3

The system seems to be performing quite well for me at the moment. I did buy another gig of matched pair(s) to get the RAM to 2 GB & also bought dual core 939 processor - AMD Opteron 175 @ 2.2 GHZ. Hopefully things should remain the same after i swap the new parts.

I did this same deal last month with a different rebate number, so do you think i can do it again? The rebate states one per address but this is a diffferent rebate number. Worked out great last month since I sold the 2 512 meg modules I took out for 20 dollars on craigslist. I'll do the same when I get these.

I got in on this deal, but the memory would not boot my computer. I have the Elite Group (ECS) K7VTA3 (Rev 8.0) Motherboard purchased from FRY's many years ago. I guess I'll just keep it and mail off my rebate. I'm going now buy the 2GB (2x1gb) PC3200 DDR 184-Pin DIMM Kingston ValueRAM KVR400AK2/2GR $16.99 @Frys after $43.00 MIR and give that a shot. http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/876064?highlight_key=y&keyword1=ddr

Try resetting the BIOS, wait a minute or so and cross your fingers.

If you buy another set (of DDR), and your next PC most likely will use DDR2, you would be stuck with 2 sets.

WhiteBoi, I appreciate your suggestion. Thank you very much. I have already ordered the Kingston ValueRAM and will try your suggestion if those do not boot. I might even try your idea later just to see anyways. It looks like I would have to write down my current BIOS settings before doing this since it will reset to default.

alert mods

WhiteBoi, you were 100% correct on that resetting the BIOS might work. I will now use the extra set on my wife’s computer which is running on 750MB now. Thank you again WhiteBoi and thank you OP.

TIA for any info.

YES, it should. PC3200 is downward compatible with PC2700 and PC2100.
