In my area they had a promo for 6 months for 29.99, than it goes to 44.95 My 6 months was up about 2 months ago so I was paying 44.95...I decided that was too much to pay, so I was going to go to a lower my service.
I called and they gave me two options for my area. RoadRunner Lite & RoadRunner 2.0
Light was 24.95 & Roadrunner 2.0 is 29.95.
I said I'd think about the prices and call back. About an hour goes by and I called back because I decided to go with RoadRunner 2.0
When I asked to be downgraded to 2.0 the operator asked me WHY I would I wanted to drop the 44.95 plan. I said it was too much and that I'm hardly using the internet so their's no need for me to pay the extra prices. She than followed up asking me if would I stay with my 44.95 service is she could drop 10 dollars a month, I asked if I had to make a commitment and she said no....so in one simple call I dropped 10 dollars off my road runner bill. I'm now paying 34.95 (she said they can't change the price on my account for a year and that she would log it..I can cancel anytime.
So it's worth a shot if your an existing Customer to try and give them a call....worst case scenario they say no....if that's the case, call back and hope you get another operator. Worked for me...maybe it will work for some of you also!!!!
A few months back when RR turned into a major chickens**t and removed newsgroups, I called and complained. They had used the excuse that "newsgroups just weren't used". Well, I used them, and I knew that the real reason they dropped them was that New York was getting ready to start suing internet providers because 68 of 90,000 newsgroups had kiddie porn (I'd rather see the kiddie port purveyors shot, personally). I called and griped, especially since RR gave 3rd party options for newsgroup suppliers that cost upwards of $20/month.
After a good gripe session or two, they dropped my overall Time-Warner bill by close to $30/month for 2 years.
So, if you used newsgroups, or can speak intelligently enough about them to gripe to RR about them, give it a shot.
I have the same problem. I've been on the promo for 7 MBps for 29.95, the promo price ended and now I'm pay 44.95. I called in to ask fora cheaper plan because that was way too much. Both reps told me they couldn't do anything unless I go to the slow connection.
Maybe I'll try calling again, or else I'll have to downgrade. Anyone had success getting their plans cheaper?
it's actually nothing new. you are allowed a promotional rate every 6 months. u can get 34.95 for 1 year or 29.99 for 6 months
29.99 for 6 months is better. because u have to wait 6 months again before you can do the promo example: first 6 months, 29.99, next 6 months 41.95 (earthlink) 44.95 RR call in, readjust to 29.99 again for 6 months. next 6 months regular price.
if u do 34.95.. u would be in a 18 month cycle. 1 year 34.95, wait 6 months, then 34.95 again.
been doing it for 3 years now. the funny thing is this promo rate has no contract. u can cancel anytime. so it's basically month to month.
Edit: forgot to mention what to ask for.. I always just if i can get any promo rates. they check my last promo rate( that 6 month rule), and usually gives me those two options.

Last time I called to bluff and cancel, they adjusted my account right away. I didn't have to wait 6 months. I have TWC cable and internet.
Digital cable w/DVR receiver, showtime free for 1 year, 2nd digital tier free for 6 months, RR standard (6 mpbs) $66.50/month + taxes

they told me that since I already had the promo rate for 29.99 that I couldn't get it again that's why I went with the 34.95 ???
Did I get swindled out of 5 bucks?

This isn't a deal. It's common business practice for subscriber-based services. Not mention, it's incredibly YMMV. I did sometyhing very similar with my Sprint cell phone bill. This is a thread better saved for the discussion forums.

i've tried that, and also tried to threaten to cancel my RR but the lady didnt seem like she cared. so i got angry and canceled it. my bro reactivated it under his name for 30/month, for a year only tho.
to me, *this msg for you RR* if you guys are trying to make/keep customers, it would be nice to show them a little respect after all i've been with them for 10+ years. they didnt really care about anything, just cancel and that was that. you wont be in business that long if thats the attitude you're teaching your workers.

I just called them and said I was getting FiOS in my neighborhood and was thinking of switching. They gave me their fastest service for $29.95 for one year. Not bad. On the work-order, it says "FIOS SAVE." Call if you have Verizon in your area. Time Warner is afraid of FIOS.

I just told them to put me on the promo price since I was also paying 45/mo. I have been with them for over a year and they happily switched me to the promo.

FYI most companies will bend over backwards to keep you as a client if you "decide" to cancel.
I have Cox cable for both cable and internet. I called them and told them that I would like to cancel their services. They asked why, I told them that with the economy being what it was i felt i was paying too much and could save money with different carriers for both internet and tv service. The rep then cut my current bill by more than 30% for 3 months and 20% for the next year.
Try it. Call your company and tell them that you're interested in canceling your service and ask what you need to do in order to do this. When they ask why, just say you feel you could save money by going with different carriers in the area. See what they offer you. If they offer nothing then you're no worse off than you are now.

I don't think just telling them to put me on the Promo price will work. I might try the cancel approach. When i canceled my cable service with them for DTV they specifically asked me if a discount in my bill would change things. But if they do nothing after i tell them i want to cancel, then what do i do? Just say o nevermind i want to keep my service? haha

Ask them for details on canceling your service... for example.. if you have a cable box ask where you need to return it to, or if somebody has to be scheduled to come turn it off since you had to have somebody come out to turn it on. If they ask if you want to turn it off now tell them you need to call DTV first to schedual installation and you'll get back to them to make sure you don't have any serious interuptions in your service. That almost always does it... if they don't say anything.. *shrug* go with dtv anyways they apparently don't value as a customer enough :-p
Just a note, usually when you say you are going to switch to DSL or another provider they just recommend going for the lower bandwidth cheaper RR service. That's their way to offer you a lower monthly fee but it sacrifices the connection speed.
I started on a promo rate $30 for 3 months. Once it expired I was paying the regular one for about a year before I started using an unencrypted wifi that I was picking up. After another year or so that free wifi got a bit spotty so I signed up for RR again at $30 for 12 months. I don't remember how long after that expired I was paying the $45, but a friend of mine in different state told me he just called comcast and asked for the promo rate again and they gave it to him. So I did the same - called RR and told them that the $45 seems a bit too much compared to the $30 and while I prefer to have my own connection I'm thinking of sharing with my neighbors, They gave me the $30 for another year. Few months ago I got a flyer that RR is increasing their rates. Strangely enough once the promo expired I got $45 and not $50.Just called them and asked for another promo rate and the lowest they could offer me was $35, which was what the flyer advertised as the 'new promo'.
