But is it your best throwing light? If not, I want to see beam shot comparisons at a distance !

Thanks for the warning about the QC (CandlePowerForums also mentions this issue). I bought two that looked pretty centered (it's hard to tell through the packaging) and took them home to compare. It was really obvious that one of them was not up to par (lots of concentric rings, beam not very tight), so that one is going back.

Cant find it on The Home Depot website. I tried all Husky products and even the number code you gave.

I found one left at my HD last night -- however it was all-black (???). It did say "4 WATT LED TACTICAL FLASHLIGHT" on the upper right of the packaging, and it was a Husky, but didn't have fins at the base nor an aluminum top. And it did have what looked like the same LED.

While I was considering it (I liked the all-black construction and no fins), I noticed that the plastic packaging had been opened, and apparently somebody put this other model flashlight in.

I brought it to a CSR and asked him to check their inventory. He saw they had 13 left, and found six in a box in the upper racks. They all had aluminum tops though, and he couldn't find any more of the all-black ones.

Does this thing throw light! I wish I had this when we had a prolonged power outage some weeks back.

Does anybody know what model the other all-black Husky flashlight was, and if it also is 4-watt 200 lumens?

BTW SKU (for the aluminum top) is 626731.

Green for you OP

I picked up the only one left at my local HD but I have a question.
Mine has several rings around the center beam and looks like a bright center beam and poor light outside of that. Is this a result of the poor centering you were mentioning or something else?

The teachers use to say that about me in elementary school.

Well, if your story is anything like mine, they start you off slow, like a free LED keychain light. "Go ahead, kid, just try it" they will say. You try it, you like it, and you find yourself weakening. Just one more LED light. "It won't hurt just to buy this AA" you find yourself saying. Then it's on to C, D, 123. You find yourself craving more and more power, more watts, multiple LED's. "This is the last one!" you say to yourself. But you know you are just lying to yourself. Soon your head is filled with terms like lumens, Cree, Nichia. You know now that it's too late - you can't stop.

Off to Home Depot.

lol, that other flashlight was a switch out. sounds like someone returned their cheap crappy flashlight in place of the husky. pretty much stole from the store.

That is spillover, and its not a result of poor centering. All lights except lasers have some, it just means how focused the beam is. The less spillover the better, but then again you may want to see to the sides also.

They are virtually all made by the same couple companies/factories.
The kneepads, utility knives, hammers, flashlights, etc that I sourced
and ordered house-branded by the containerload at my last job for a
tool company were identical to the kneepads, knives, etc with Husky,
Kobalt and Task Force names down to the smallest detail except for the
logo, colors and package artwork. Its not even close to cost-effective
for small retailers like HD and Lowes to engineer and develop their
own private-label products, hence why their blades are made by Stanley
or ASR, kneepads, gloves etc by China.

After reading that thread, I convinced the wife we could use a good flash light (especially at such a price) and we went to get those at HD.
We paid attention to the centering and chose a first one. As soon as we stepped out, I ripped the packaging and tried it but no luck. The thing would not even turn on. Back for an exchange (talk about QC problem...). The 2nd one is just great. Very concentrated beam, great throw and nice flood on the sides. Only problem would be the button, as it is a bit difficult to lock (it clicks but may not stay on). I'm still keeping it, just for the great beam. With that, it will be easy to find my cat under the hedges

my homedepot charges 29.97 for this light.......didnt buy it cause the led wasnt centered only 1 in stock

OK, I picked one up at Home Crapo. They had 3 in stock so I picked the one with the LED the closest to center. It turns out the other 2 were off.

I must admit it's pretty darn bright compared to a regular filament style flashlight however I'm not too happy with the on/off switch. It seems to take more then normal pressure to toggle on and off. (more so then Maglites). I also noticed that the beam is not adjustable like my old Maglites. I liked being able to widen or focus the ray of light.

Is there an afordable way to swap the lighbulbs in old Maglites to LEDs?

Yes, they're called Maglite drop-in LED's, and there are many of them to choose from. Of course, Candlepowerforums.com is the best resource for anything related to lights, and I was able to find a thread just on this subject which lists all the options as well as their pro's and con's (which with flashlights, you'll learn that there are many tradeoffs to make, such as the power source of the light, the spill and color of the beam, the run-times of the light, and the form factor: MagLite Upgrade Thread at CPF.

The one downside of modding a MagLite is that you'll still get an almost immediate and gradual decline in brightness from the moment you install new batteries. With some of the latest and more advanced flashlights (which can also be fairly inexpensive) you'll have a fairly consistent light output up until the very end of the life of the battery. This is made possible by the regulated current that the circuitry of the flashlight provides.

If you'd like to see other options, this comparison thread of LED's lists the ratings of the flashlight and its price (I stick with the 5 & 6 star flashlights that cost <$40) as well as the type of battery it uses (AA vs AAA vs more exotic battery types), the number of modes (which allow you to adjust the output of the light), and the output (measured in throw and lightbox readings).

Good luck! With more hours of darkness after daylight savings, you'll see how handy having a flashlight around can be!

It's a man's flashlight.

cleartrace said:OK, here is a practical use for these (actually more lumens) high powered devices:

We use them for night cycling, primarily mountain biking. You can get the same power from spending about $100 as you would get from a $400 set of cycling-specific lights. I have a setup that produces 750+ lumens from one light on the handlebars for less than $60 including batteries and a charger. Then I spent another $40 for extra batteries (all rechargeable), mounts and a 300 lumen spot flashlight for my helmet. I suppose you can power a flashlight like this with D cells (for a while?) but it's definitely to heavy for cycling, so we use rechargeable lithium ions that can handle the required output without exploding.

Unfortunately you have to deal direct from Hong Kong for these kinds or more powerful LED lights right now (but you get 2-3 times the power per dollar). I was happy to start seeing lights like these in HD and Lowe's because it mean getting them will soon be much easier. Often times it takes weeks if not months to get orders from HK.

How can you mount one of the flashlights to your handlebars? Where did you get hardware? Do you have a linK?
