I love the free market. I have no sorrow for price-gouging companies that die.

After massive store closings last year Tweeter stores were mostly left on East Coast (the HQ is in MA). This was a great store where every salesperson really knew what they were talking about (unlike BB or CC) and could give you a great advice on what to buy etc. Completely opposite of predominant majority of morons working in BB or CC (although CC salespeople are much friendlier). With Tweeter closing and CC is on the verge of closing, BB will be the only major electronic retailer on East Coast. Sorry for the rant... but this will suck big time!

Actually, you're wrong. Nobody said anything about Hifi.com- pay attention. Hifi Buys, Showcase, and Sound Advice are all Tweeter companies.

Indeed. I think the confusion arose because just typing Hifi by itself automatically links to Hifi.com (which is, indeed, Cambridge Soundworks) because that's what FatWallet does, but check out HiFiBuys.com and notice the big "Store Closing ... 20-50% Off" poster they display.

But man, I'd love to see a 50% off sale at Hifi.com!

In the past, I've done some research at the local Tweeter, but I've never bought so much as a cable there because they are so overpriced. That probably has something to do with why they're going out of business. 20% off of an inflated retail price might not be a great deal, but 50% off probably is....

Over-priced? Tweeter used to do a great job with price-matching. They'd match advertised prices and then monitor advertised prices for 30 days after your purchase and refund any difference. Maybe the base prices were high, but I thought that alone was a good reason to choose them over Best Buy.

Feel bad making money on someone else's loss but I'm gonna buy anyways.

its common for a company that is closing to have a 3rd party come in and manage the clearance sales.

they usually go and mark everything up right before the closing sale, so that when you take the 20-50% off, they're still making money on it (sometimes it's more expensive to buy an item after the closing sale starts than if you bought it before the closing sale started.

I miss the Tweeter stores we had in TN. I could go in and listen to (& buy if they give me a decent price) brands like JL, Boston, etc, and higher end lines from other brands that you can't find in CC/BB, even if they carry the same brand.

While they may be marking up things in an effort to reduce their overall death knell expenses now, Tweeter/Sound Advice etc. had knowledgeable sales staff (as has been stated before), and they would work with you on price matching and making a deal if you tried. Just remember as you gloat over yet another company's death that the ones that are left when the dust settles will have no reason not to begin price gouging themselves because they will have no competition to keep them in line. Price matching? Price match to who if there's no local retailers left? In my opinion people would go into Tweeter stores and gather information from the knowledgeable staff then go buy at the rock-bottom no-overhead cheapest place they could find.

I don't see this as a good thing at all.

I do because thats free market and my right as an american.

Why should I have loyalty to a store because they're knowledgeable?

I'm worried about me and my family, so the best price is what suits me, and if it means that another over priced mom and pop store or chain bites the dust so be it if it means more money in my pocket. This is fatwallet not loyal to one store because they're knowledgable wallet.

sorry to digress but the free market attitude is the reason the government just did that big bailout. If people don't have a social conscience themselves then eventually the government will have to step in and FORCE THEM to have one. A rampant free market sounds good in theory but it can't go on forever when it'as based on consumable and non-renewable resources. Essentially the big cheap guys kill off the small guys until they're the only ones left, then the big guys start raising prices and dictating the market, then the government steps in and eliminates the free market by imposing sanctions on the big guys to let some new small guys in ... who then become big guys themselves .... rinse and repeat.

Loyalty is not the problem.
Your action and reaction are both short sighted.
We complain that chains like BB or CC have no knowledgeable staff, but then, when push come to shove, we will only abuse the knowledgeable staff, get anything we need out of them and buy later at the cheapest price.
Yes, this is the free market in a sense. They provided a free service (knowledge and good customer service) with the understanding you would buy from them. This does not work obviously. This means we all concentrate *ONLY* on price, not even value (which is price compared to quality). This does not bode well, as this means we will have a bunch more of entry level jobs in retail, as this is what people expect: clueless cheap labor and low prices.
Tomorrow, that cheap labor may be you. We are buying ourselves into the ground...

LilGator said:Checked 'em out last night, honestly, the deals were pretty bad. Most every TV was at least 20% higher than you'd find them online at respectable dealers. Nice selection, but way overpriced even with closeout sales...

Which is why they went out of business. Stupid business model, ie compete against Best Buy and Circuit City with higher prices. Dumb.

Thank you, LilGator - I was wracking my brain for the past hour trying to think of what the Tweeter on Glenwood in Raleigh, NC used to be. It used to be Sound Advice. No more wracking needed (at least on this subject).

trust me you are not missing anything. Just a bunch of overpriced crap. Was at the one in Towson, MD over the weekend. The TV prices were out of this world even after the 10-20% off. You could go up to BestBuy and get the same TV for $500-1000 less. And I wonder why these idiots went out of business lol.

Most of their audio equipment and speakers were well overpriced and could be found at Best Buy as well. They sell Polk and Klipsch speakers... that ain't high end folks. These guys are a snob chain and they don't even sell high end equipment. If they were selling B&W and Paradigm then I would be excited.

They did have one sucker in there, middle aged guy and his wife. Buying a TV for like $3000 when they could get it at bestbuy for $1500. I guess they wanted the prestige of telling there friends it was bought at Tweeter. lol

Tweeter's target market/business model was "mid-fi". Not the top end audiophile stuff, not the Best Buy/CC stuff either...in between. Commissioned sales hacks that attacked you like an uncrowded McDonald's counter staff the moment you entered the place.

Tweeter's only value was to listen to/view the equipment you may have been interested in and then purchase it online or somewhere else that didn't have such bloated markups. They have sucked for a long time and it's surprising they didn't Chapt.7 long before this.

No doubt they are being liquidated by a Gordon Bros. or similar, if that's the case, expect their 50% of pricing to be about 30% more then Costco or Best Buy or Frys.

Glad to see them go.

This is exactly my point. Since salespeople were on comissions, they were eager to win your business. And they even price-matched the internet price it it wasn't outright ridiculous (my experience, really). Couple of years ago they carried B&K Components receivers, Velodine and REL subwoofers and many other components that BB had not and will not ever sell.
They also carried Klipsch Reference Speakers, not the cheapo made in China Synergy that sounds almost like Bose.

I can go on and on, but my point was that: here in New England we had 3 major retailer. Tweeter was mid-to high end, BB and CC were mass market. Berney's that's like Big lots among electronic retailers albeit with twice as pushy and obnoxious salespeople. So with Tweeter going belly up options here are shrinking.

There's a silver lining to this.
Maybe frys will come to the east coast now with CC and Tweeter going away.
