true that ..... true that .......

I don't think that will happen as bad as you might think. The internet has saved us from the retail vultures. I bought my TV at CC, but if the prices were much higher than internet sites, I would have bit the bullet and had it delivered.

Maybe frys will come to the east coast now with CC and Tweeter going away.

FYI Frys is in just as bad financial shape as CC. Plus they are already on the East Coast in the Atlanta GA area. Well at least for now.

Thank you very much for this information. I used return protection and warranty extension a lot but never looked carefully at the terms.

cnIsfg said:FYI AMEX return protection AND AMEX extended warranty protections do NOT apply if you purchase from a retailer that has publically announced they are closing at the time of your purchase(s) from that retailer. This applies to self directed liquidations as well as third pary liquidations. I went through this with AMEX return protection last year and a couple of defective CompUSA purchases which they refused to accept under EITHER AMEX program benefit because CompUSA was going out of business so beware.

Edit: For those interested here (Adobe PDF) is the link AMEX sent me with my Return Protection claim denial. The exclusion for purchases from closing stores is in thier program terms under the Limitations section through just mentioned briefly. I figured at worse I could then file an AMEX warranty protection claim and get a refund but AMEX flat out denied to accept the claim after I emailed them my CompUSA receipt. They claimed the store was closing and eyerything was sold ALL SALES FINAL and items sold under that premise are excluded from the AMEX Extended Warranty Program.

Does anyone know what they will do with their warranties? I got a 3 year warranty in 2006 on my car speakers and if they go out of business before my warranty is up, am I stuck if something happens?

My experiences with Tweeter in the Chicago area have been very positive. Their knowledgeable staff and selection of top quality merchandise was quite refreshing in my opinion. Sometimes you have to pay more to get the benefit of excellent customer service.

Aside....
I also have shopped at Crutchfield.com. Although their prices are far from the cheapest, they represent the BEST value for me in terms of customer service, technical support, and have many quality items.

In parts of the North East we used to have Bryn Mawr Stereo for the medium range stuff. Once Bryn Mawr was purchased by Tweeter everything at these stores (including quality of selection) went downhill. I have to believe the expansion of Best Buy's (awful) Magnolia HT store within a store was a final nail in areas where the two concepts competed. (Near me the Tweeter and Best Buy w/Magnolia were literally next door to each other.)

Out of curiosity I walked into my local Tweeter store to see what store closing "deals" were available and found absolutely nothing. 20% off list is not a good deal especially for open box merchandise.

Another victim of the internet. Soon the only place to buy anything will be online. Works for me.

Maybe myer emco can close down too.

I have hated them ever since they spilled soda in my car while removing a stereo that didn't work right.

stopped in ! - nothing of interest - yet - all discounts are off msrp - deeper discounts on floor models, but sales are final - so beware! good luck!

so I wonder what happens to my warranty with them for my tv I bought already.

LilGator said:Checked 'em out last night, honestly, the deals were pretty bad. Most every TV was at least 20% higher than you'd find them online at respectable dealers. Nice selection, but way overpriced even with closeout sales...

Floor model receivers/speakers are probably your best bet for finding a decent deal.

If I remember correctly, Tweeter also = Sound Advice, at least at one point, they may have closed those down.

yeah, i pretty much would think 30% off would be standard internet prices

Why should I have loyalty to a store because they're knowledgeable?

I'm worried about me and my family, so the best price is what suits me, and if it means that another over priced mom and pop store or chain bites the dust so be it if it means more money in my pocket. This is fatwallet not loyal to one store because they're knowledgable wallet.

Loyalty is not the problem.
Your action and reaction are both short sighted.
We complain that chains like BB or CC have no knowledgeable staff, but then, when push come to shove, we will only abuse the knowledgeable staff, get anything we need out of them and buy later at the cheapest price.
Yes, this is the free market in a sense. They provided a free service (knowledge and good customer service) with the understanding you would buy from them. This does not work obviously. This means we all concentrate *ONLY* on price, not even value (which is price compared to quality). This does not bode well, as this means we will have a bunch more of entry level jobs in retail, as this is what people expect: clueless cheap labor and low prices.
Tomorrow, that cheap labor may be you. We are buying ourselves into the ground...

I feel the same way! I bought some things at Fry's today in Burbank, CA and the customer service culture that the employees have been allowed to create there is disheartening. I feel as if they are almost playing the asshole card with customers by being completely bullish and getting away with it, knowing they will come back because of the low prices. It's not just Fry's. I'm continuing to see a collection of arrogant pricks in each and every retail chain, Best Buy, RadioShack, Circuit City, and especially bad Fry's. Then again, I think about how little those employees are making, and I can't really complain, but really, their overt display of stupidity and attitude towards work is beyond me.

5 months ago I went in to a Tweeter to buy a car stereo was greeted and sent to the mobile specialist. I was interested in a car stereo with either Bluetooth or HD and explained to the sales staff that I wanted something around $300 and had either Bluetooth or HD built but was not interested in any extra modules to add the functions.

He took me over to the 4 models he had and explained that the Apline was just what I needed. When I asked if it had HD or Bluetooth built in he said yes with the extra Add on module. And what was the price...

$1200 - Ha Ha Ha...

I asked him and his manager if he understood my requirements - and that if they hadn't noticed we were in a recession. Nope.

When I was at their web page I filled in a customer service notice and the District Manager called me and we spoke about the issues and offered my prediction that without a radical shakeup in their corporate buyers lack of reality in the current ecconomic climate and a serious revamp in their sales force being able to listen and meet customer requirements that the store would go out of business.

The store buyers were clueless about the financial marketplace, the sales staff not interested to listen to the customer, and management lacking in a vision to change the comapny mantra.

$1200 for a car stereo in a recession - get real Tweeter.

There's a few JVC models that would probably work for you.

I hope Frys don't go belly up because I'd be out of places to shop electronics. Despite the OK customer service, I 'd rather shop there than BB or CC for electronics to avoid the overly inflated Best Buy / CC tax. But other than that, they're not all that bad for the price / service tradeoff.

Heh... stopped by... none of the prices come close to Crutchfield's everyday prices... and isnt exactly the cheapest source.
