German Engineering for less than $20,000 says the ad.

Crossfire Closeout

They should sellout quickly if those with cash see this. A Mercedes convertible with 6-speed manual for around $23k brand new! Wow, shows you how bad the financing market is right now. Cash rules!!!

amazing deal!

why the red? If I were in the market for this type of car I'd be all over it. Crossfire is pretty nice.

Good deal.

Good deal OP.

Not bad at all. Green for OP even though I'm a Subaru man myself. RWD with some decent power and a good stick shift under $20K is a fantastic deal.

German engineering my a$$. Don't forget Daimler-Chrysler no longer exists. It sold off Chrysler to Cerebus Capital Management. Daimler could not overcome all the problems inherent in the American auto business (unions, poor workmanship).

All auto critics agree that the cars produced during the Daimler-Chrysler era had little of the good "German engineering" and mostly the bad "Chrysler engineering". I once rented a Crossfire from National Rent a Car on a business trip. What a POS! I own a real German engineered car (2008 BMW 328i hardtop convertible) and the comfort, ride, and feel difference IS night and day.

You get what you pay for - $23K for a car with terrible reliability, terrible ride, and little resale value.

Isn't this a typical auto advertisement that is bait and switch? Only one is avail at low price and the rest are jacked up?

I mean, it says, "starting at 18,845".

Just the cynical me.

50 Crossfires is a lot of Stock. Doubt the bait or switch. Cars are not selling. Tight credit. This is a highly specialized 2 seater which really doesn't move unless priced to give away.

Keep in mind the Crossfire is now discontinued, still a sweet car.

I remember how interesting this car was when it first came out. Some background on the original. Whether it has the same underpinnings, engine, etc., is questionable, but at least you'll have more info if you decide to inquire further and ask questions.

'But below that is a truly European heart, with the Crossfire based on the previous-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster.'

This is one heck of a good deal if you're in the market for one...

The $20 Bass Pro Shops gift card seals the deal for me !!!

This is one heck of a good deal if you're in the market for one...

The Crossfire shares 39% of its components with other Mercedes models. The chassis is a combination of a modified C-class engine compartment, pre-2003 SLK platform, S-Class rear linkages and new stampings for the side rails and rear. The design was engineered by Detroit.

No one who wants a racy European sportscar buys a Chrysler, no matter where it is made or how many parts it shares with a Mercedes. And Americans aren’t into paying for a bit of a German halo. In addition, the steering is lackluster and the ride was unremarkable (according to Edmunds.com). Thus the car was discontinued. You don't discontinue cars people want.

People buy sports cars to relay a message about themselves. With this car you say "I am too cheap to buy a real sports car - Ladies, who wants to join me for dinner at Golden Corral, I have a buy one get one free buffet coupon!"

Ouch.

They make good points. They thing is very poorly styled and is a dog. Do they make a supercharged version?

I recently bought a 328i non-convertible. The best car I've ever owned. It's indescribable the ride and the feel. It really is a driving machine. It's a little small for me though. So I'm giving it to my wife and getting a 5 series.

I love the way the Crossfire looks but have never ridden one. I always figured it's a lot of eye candy on the outside and American carp on the inside. Still, at 17k, it seems like a good deal. I might look at if for my daughter.

Edit. My mistake. After looking at the video, I see it's a lot of german engineering but not good. Oh well, gonna pass on this one.

That 39% is the official figure from Chrysler because they certainly don't want to admit that the thing is essentially a rebadged Mercedes. The platform, engine, transmission, brakes, steering components and switchgear are all Mercedes. And the big giveaway...it's made in Germany. I'm not sure how Chrysler came up with their figure, but it really is an SLK in disguise.
I don't disagree with your other points. I just take issue with anyone claiming that this is an American car.

"A dog doing number 2." That's too funny!

In for 1 ! And the trunk is big enough to store all those Golden Corral coupons I saved up.

Hideous looking cars...

those thinking that this is a good deal really should test drive it first. I've rented one expecting this to be a fun ride but I was disappointed. Worst $75 I ever spent. It does not feel like a German engineered car both inside and handling-wise.

I guess the question is, what other cars <20k can compete with this?

Is it a BMW? No
Is it a Mercedes? According to reviews, No

Is it a Chrysler? Yes, so don't expect too much excitement.

Put 3 other new cars at less than 20k that will compete with this deal...

I don't live in TX, nor would I be interested in one since I have a family...

Every one here keeps saying it's a great deal if you're in the market for this type of car, but the problem is there are few buyers that are in the market for it... the reason for the big price cut. In the recent econmic downswing, most car buyers are looking for practicality (and of course economy). The Crossfire is a niche car ( a two door roadster). With so few new cars being sold, buyers aren't lining up to buy a two door domestic roadster.

Sounds like the Consumer Reports quick take:
"Based on the old Mercedes-Benz SLK, this rear-drive two-seater has a strong engine, but handling lacks finesse. The ride is stiff, visibility is poor, and there's too much wind noise."

no kidding and that lifetime warranty means you'll have a warranty until chryslers goes out of business. oh wait that will nevar happen!

Sounds to me like someone is a car snob who doesn't like the idea of another car being better than what they bought, regardless of what it is.

Wow -- Jeremy Clarkson is really brutal in that review:

"It looks like a dog doing a poo, it's slow, uncomfortable, expensive and cursed with a cramped, badly-trimmed interior, an awful gearbox and no back seat. The engine doesn't make a particularly sporty noise, the ride is terrible, and it isn't especially economical. This has to be the worst example of American-German cooperation since....Budweiser."

They suggest getting the sporty version of the Celica (do they even sell it in the US?) or the Mazda RX-8, both of which are cheaper than the ~$50K the car costs in the UK. Of course, he may have had a somewhat more forgiving view if the car had been priced at ~10,000 pounds instead of ~25,000 pounds.

OT: That review is exactly the reason I love Top Gear and have grave doubts that the US version of the show will succeed. It's a car-guy show, which means the auto manufacturers will be lining up to buy ad time...but what happens when Adam Carolla says, 'this new Chrysler is a steaming hunk of poo. I can't imagine any sane person buying one.'? I'm guessing Chrysler won't be too pleased, and will pull their ads -- so the show will either die from lack of advertising revenue or the hosts will limited to saying positive things about the cars or reviewing only cars they like.

i'll add to this with something that is moderately off topic. I got this email today, and then an email saying that the email was sent out in error, but the deals and rebates were still good. Dont know why they recalled the email, but here is the info. Looks like there might be a lot of deals on Chrysler vehicles right now:

Note that the lifetime in the lifetime powertrain warranty is the lifetime of the Chrysler Corporation.

Ooops, didn't see rigor's post.

I did not see the word "New" in the ad. These may be program cars, perhaps the same poo that posters "auyong" and "b0bzilla" rented.

$17000 off? I thought they cost $17000!

Personally I prefer the styling of the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile over the Crossfire.

b0bzilla said: German engineering my a$$. Don't forget Da]imler-Chrysler no longer exists.

The Crossfire was built in Osnabrueck, Germany by Karmann using a Mercedes Benz powertrain and axle assembly. Just the facts...

If you want a Crossfire, this is a very good deal. If you don't like Crossfires and you are posting in this thread to say so, you really need to get a life. There's lots of cars I do not care for, yet others buy them and like them. This is a deal forum, not a place to demonstrate how large your knowledge of cars is so you can save people who do not agree with you and are therefore stupid....

For the bitter BMW owner above who knows he overspent on his car... The crossfire is not only german engineered but as built it Germany and imported to the US. The car was not even built by Chrysler but I instead by Karmann for Chrysler... Know the facts before you make yourself sound so bitter...

"GERMAN ENGINEERING" is not what it used to be. Yes, 20 or 30 years ago when you compared German engineering to most other vehicles there was a huge difference in quality. Todays German engineered vehicles are overpriced and maintenance intensive. Two of the biggest German makes (Volkswagen and Mercedes) are now ranked at the bottom of the list when it comes to the number of defects per vehicle and other quality issues.
