Normally, the SPOT receiver runs $149 and the Basic service for 1 year is $99 for a total of $248. Currently, there is a $50 Mail-in Rebate from the manufacturer making it essentially, $199. Costco has the receiver and Basic service for $199 with a $50 Mail-in Rebate making it $149. Essentially, you're saving $50 buying through Costco.

WARNING!! The $50 rebate quoted is through Continental Promotion Group, which is bankrupt -- causing rebate checks to bounce.
Until SPOT announces they will honor the rebate some other way, assume the $50 rebate is void!

I don't pay costco anyway to be allowed to shop there.
Idiotic premise...
I go with a neighbor.

I pay $100 for the membership.

They send me a check for $250 at the end of the year.

Not purchasing a membership: Idiotic conclusion.

OK, so how or why do they pay out $250 for a $100 membership...

Here is the link to the service: http://www.findmespot.com/en/ I have one of those units and use it when I fly cross country in a hang glider. Works OK, but it does seem to want to be positioned face up and with no obstructions to the sky.

With the excutive membership($100) you get 2% Cash Back on purchases from Costco. We have done the excutive membership for the past couple of years and get atleast $200-300 back each year, not including the Cash Back from the Costco/AMEX card.

Riding my Sport Touring (ST1100) bike all over, SPOT looked interesting, but seemed pricey.

Found a free alternative that works much better is some aspects, and a little worse in others. But, it's free.

TrackMe Main site

TrackMe Forum

Requires a phone with Windows Mobile and GPS, as well as web capabilities on the phone.
I use a PPC6700 and a $20 external Bluetooth GPS.
I have never had this not work traveling in the SE USA.
but, that is the bad part. You need cell phone signal. It will save locations if you are temporarily out of cell service area, then send data as soon as you re-enter cell service area.

You can configure this to update as often as you wish, by time or distance traveled.
Anyone can view your location instantly in real time, and they can see it change in real time, using Google maps, Google earth or the Trackme browser.

The extra features are awesome. You can stop anytime and take a picture, and they then are included in your current trip for others to see. Add text and notes as well.

All free.

Looks like Smart Phone and other versions for other phones coming soon.
Also works without GPS using Cell ID, but I could not figure it out that way, and just used Bluetooth GPS.

UPDATE:
11/12/08
-TrackMe is now compatible with Smartphones and non touchscreen devices.

I looked into this before and again now but still no coverage in Southern and East Africa where I spend a lot of time.

I paid 5k for a breitling emergency watch for when I go boating, might just pickup one of these as well, for 200 bux its not much considering it purpose.

Its a great deal for what it is, I'm thinking hard about getting one now since I tend to stay away from cell phone coverage often.
