Lowest price I have found that's not a refurb. Anyone looking for a sound bar for TV/movies, this is a great buy. Sorry -I know there are postings about Sears friends and family already, but I have not seen this item listed, and this is a deal.

Tell me a model. The Yamaha sound bars I've looked at are way more expensive than the Sony. Sony has pretty good ratings, based on inputs, sound quality, and price. Can't touch this for $199. Check the ratings....I've been going back and forth on a HTIB or this sound bar. The $100 price drop makes the decision easy. I'm looking for good sound quality for tv's/movies, low clutter, and don't need a dvd (have PS3).
I got the Sony DWG-700 for $150 at Fry's but really wanted this Sony soundbar instead. With the price now $50-70 lower than before I'm going to jump on it.
Here are the reviews at AVSForums, seems to be pretty good for its price range. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1026566

Green to you! Just got one for $179.99 after 10% friends and family discount! With tax $192.14. Plus FatWallet CashBack 4%. Just checked it came to be $7.20.
Sorry but the virtual surround from these bars simply can't compare to a real 5.1 setup. I can understand the selling points: convenience and price. If you consider that you're not getting surround sound, those points aren't really valid. I'd recommend putting the money towards decent individual speakers.
got one, thanks OP! And yes, it doesnt sound as good as a $20,000 7.1 sound system either, but I dont have the space nor the $20,000! If it gets the job done reasonably well for the price, then its a good deal.
Thanks OP. I read a positive blurb about this in Consumer Reports just yesterday and today I see this deal. I'm in!

I bought mine 2 months ago at Costco for $220.
The feature I like the most is the HDMI switch. I supports 3 HDMI IN and 1 HDMI OUT. There is support for 3 optical audio inputs. They can be used independent of HDMI inputs.

A low-end 5.1 setup can be had for under $500 and would actually produce surround sound. Not dissing on this deal, just letting people know what to expect. I have what might be called a mid-level set of speakers at under $1k and the sound is phenomenal. Sure there are better, but my ears can't tell.
Have one of these---great solution for a small bedroom. The soundbar fits perfectly in my bookcase, right in front of my LCD.
Two complaints: it has trouble correctly handling sound over HDMI with my Toshiba A3 HD-DVD player, so have to rely on an optical hookup (so much for the miracle of HDMI). And, with some sources, the volume simply can't be gotten very loud. An issue for me since I use some exercise equipment (bike, rowing machine) while watching TV/DVDs, and like a higher volume setting to overcome the sound of the equipment, as well as my wheezing and exhausted heavy breathing.

Onkyo S5100 refurb, 7.1 HTIB, can be had for about $200 from time to time. But, this Sony looks cleaner. I think yamaha also have similat deals on the sound bar. Sony is not a big name in mid-fi and Hifi.

any opinions on the yamaha yas 70 or yas 71? it's only $250 at costco.
I've tried out more expensive products like this in the past and was severely disappointed (Polk Surroundbar), as they effectively were nothing but an overpriced center channel speaker. Sony audio products pretty much blow by all accounts, so I can't imagine this bargain basement item would be an exception to the rule.

I agree with you 100%, but most of America would be totally satisifed with this product since they don't have to run wires to the rear speakers...half probably couldn't tell the difference between a 2.1 and 5/6/7.1 system anyway...
Another vote for Onkyo....have a 770 HTIB system in the master bedroom which rocks and using a TXSR605 in my living room with some Onkyo HTIB speakers...
I'm skeptical as well however the reviews are good and there's a rather large thread of happy owners over at avsforums. For people just looking to upgrade the sound of their TV without any hassle this seems like a no-brainer.

I own the yamaha YSP-1100 sound bar. It is truly an amazing product when calibrated properly.
I have never heard the Sony bar, but was going to buy one at $179 given. I tried at about 11pm last night, but while it was showing as $199 on the product page, it was checking out as $299
i have the phillips one from Dell. it sucks monkey butt. compared to a $500 (5 year old) 6.1 Sony htib, doesn't even come close. basically sounds like someone added some DSP to a 3.1 system. exactly as you would suspect.
i think your pc can do this without paying any extra money lol.
well there's a reason why they are on sale for so cheap.
I have the Samsung soundbar with wireless subwoofer and built-in 1080p upscaling DVD. It's decent when it comes to replicating surround sound. But it cannot "fake" the two rear end speakers of a 5.1 system faithfully. So don't expect any soundbar system to replace your 5.1 surround set up. It will reduce the space needed and offer you the ease of use and looks elegant indeed.
If you missed this deal, another way to get it for around $150-$200 + tax/maybe shipping is to take advantage of the Sony Card promotion---gets you $150 (sometimes $100, promotion varies) off your first purchase of $299 at the Sony online store, where they sell for HTCT100 for $299. Previous Finance Forum thread about Sony Card deal
Yes, it involves signing up for a new credit card, so it's not for everybody.

this promotion would be put to better using buying a new camcorder, camera, PS3, or even the Sony HTIB system...using it for this sound bar would be a waste...
i have this sound bar, it's ok for small room or someone who don't want to run lots of wires n speakers, it absolutely can't replace any real surround sound systems, if you are serious about it then get yourself a 5.1/7.1 instead

Well, that completely depends on your needs, doesn't it? I didn't need a new camcorder, don't want a PS3, and for my small bedroom, a 5.1 setup just didn't make sense. But getting $150 off this soundbar did, and it has fit my needs well. I read enough positive reviews on it, knew it wasn't bad. Yeah, you can do better. But a deal's a deal sometimes.
I've got 6.1 in my living room, and 5.1 in my rec room, so I'm no stranger to the obvious benefits of true surround. But that just wasn't practical in this case, and this little soundbar has worked out to my liking.
To each his own.

Be careful with this deal, I was about buy this soundbar, but before I went to 4 different stores to check it out. The sound coming out of this system is almost non-existing,not even talking about the bass. The last trip I made was to the special Sony store in manhattan, NYC, they could not explain why, but that the sound turned on max was actually weaker than any tv speakers can give you. In CC the Boston Accoustics(100W!!!) outplayed the Sony on every measurement and Sony soundbar is supposed to be 300W, no way and as I said I tested 4 systems in 4 different stores.

Anyone have experience with setting up the remote? the only thing i find annoying is since i dont have a universal remotr, and all my equipment is not Sony i need to carry to remotes, one for the sound and one for cable. is there a way to program the remote that came with the soundbar to change cable channels?
Speaking of cheap 5.1 systems, Woot has the "Philips 1000 watt 5.1 Home Theater DVD System" for $99. Probably much better sound (and surround sound) than the Sorny Sound Bar.

Exactly. Hopefully the people buying those systems are those that want an improvement from the tv-only speakers they have now, but can't (or don't) want to invest in a full 5.1/7.1 system.
For the upcoming $199 sales, I wonder if Sears will have another 5%/10% discount? Also, does anyone know what Sears restocking fee is (if I open it, then don't like it, and want to return it)? I'm pretty sure BB is probably 15%.
