Newegg owns (or is the same as) ChiefValue. That's why their prices are in locked step.

Some issues people want to look at:

The affected part numbers for the write caching delay issues are: 9JU138-300, 336 with firmware revisions SD15, SD17, or SD18.

Unresponsive for 30 seconds at a time.

I have 2 of these in a Windows Home Server. Every hour or so my drives start high activity, and there's a loud click every 30 seconds or so. If I look in the logs, there's an error like this every 30 seconds:

***ERROR: DEfileFromShadow(filename) took too long 5360.1575ms

Basically, the drive is timing out for 30 seconds or so, which exactly matches all of the trouble reports on the internet. These drives have a serious unresolved issue, and I would definitely suggest avoiding them until Seagate figures out what the problem is.

You mean we shouldn't be unpaid beta testers for a product that we're paying for?

Here's the
"consumable" snippet from an email that was sent to tech support/sales/AE's,
etc.:

Seagate 1.5TB Customers,

Some Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB hard drives may show uncharacteristic
operation when used with Mac and Linux operating systems in multi-drive
configurations. Users may experiences pauses in video streaming applications
or
a dropped drive from RAID arrays. Customers seeing these symptoms should
contact Seagate Technical Support for a firmware upgrade.

In order to assure the proper application of the new firmware, please email a
description of the issues youre seeing to Seagate (discsupport@seagate.com)
Please include the following disk drive information: model number, serial
number and current firmware revision. Also, please describe your
system, operating system and the application in use when the issue arose. We
will respond, promptly, to your email request with appropriate instructions.

Back to $159 at Newegg, no longer available at ChiefValue.

Newegg has it back at $139.99, free shipping. Seagate's firmware fix has been reported to work.

Price is now $129.99 with free shipping at Newegg.

Was about to post the new price, but bkoo beat me to it.

In for 1. Couldn't resist. I think I'll just let this sit around for a week or two until there is more of a consensus on the firmware update. Who knows, the price may even come down by then.

As I predicted would be the official outcome in many of the other Seagate 1.5TB threads here on FW this problem was a non-issue for 99% of these drives sold to PC users. Today Seagate officially announced a new firmware update to address the so-called "freeze" problem which they confirmed ONLY appeared in Linux and Mac multi-drive configurations. Hopefully this will put an end to FUD posts like the one above by mostly naive posters who either never actually owned one of these 1.5TBSeagate drives.

$120 at the moment with free shipping from new egg.

News article about the "issues" regarding this 1.5 Tb drive.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/154602/.html?tk=rss_news

pc world: said: Seagate on Wednesday said it has fixed a bug affecting some Seagate Barracuda hard drives that caused applications to pause.

The bug resulted in the company's 7200.11 1.5T-byte hard drives hanging at certain times, which led to problems like pauses in video streaming applications. It also led to a failure to recognize drives in certain configurations. The hard drives showed "uncharacteristic operation" when used with the Macintosh and Linux OSes in multidrive environments, the company said in a statement.

To receive the firmware upgrade and instructions on how to install it, Seagate has asked customers to send the company an e-mail at discsupport@seagate.com describing the problems and system information, OS and the application in use when the issues arose. Seagate has also asked for the disk drive model number, serial number and current firmware revision. The company said it will respond promptly to e-mail messages.

I think some users had this problem using WHS (Windows Home Server) so it is not limited to Mac and Linux.

$102 after Cash Back at tiger direct.

Excellent deal. Canceled my Newegg order and went with tiger with $18 Cash Back.

Hi,
I did search via CashBack and click the link of TigerDirect but did not see any CashBack amount in TigerDirect page? And I even tried to checkout with payapl and none either. How does this CashBack works? Do I get CashBack right away or needs to wait 60 days like eBay CashBack?

Thanks.

Cool I had my Dad order this for my Christmas. I was leery about the problems but now that it has a firmware fix it sounds good to go.

dead now

free shipping dead on Newegg?

thanks guys in for two at TigerDirect pplus CashBack live great deal imo

Any good Firewire Dual enclosure to put 2x 1.5TB hard drives ?....

I went in for one. 121.98 before live.com CashBack. No tax to CA is nice (when you get the 1.99 shipping, otherwise s/h kills the deals)

I don't have a SATA interface. Anyone know of any good deals on internal PATA drives?

The largest PATA drives are 500GB, I think. Maybe 750. I'm sure someone will correct me. The PATA 500's are expensive. I know this because I looked hard for large, cheap PATA drives because I have two really nice PATA Firewire enclosures that I want to keep using. Better to just get a new SATA firewire case and a SATA drive.

there are 750's in pata. one in my xbox right now

See my post if you bought one of these drives and are having trouble with it (as I did), the post is in the computers forum.

Got my 2 drives from CompUSA. These were packaged extremely poor. Each drive came in a plastic box that has no insulation or protection for the drive. There's one very cheap and thin piece of paper on the front advertising "Advance performance series HARD DRIVE." >.> The drives are in static bags and label "The content is made in Thailand."

I don't expect these two drives to work for very long, if they work at all. They look very refurbished. Sigh. If you are thinking about getting it and the deal hasn't expired, I say stay FAR AWAY.

I got two from Newegg last week. Also in static bags and label made in Thailand but also they were placed in the polystyrene holders with lots of additional air bags around it. Very well packaged.
