Notebook coolers are as good as their design to the notebook used.
the cheapies are the ones that have static fans that only cool specific spots of a notebook, which is only good for the notebooks that actually have bottom vents/fans at those locations.
the Zalman coolers brought a new design into the game... full cooling the the stage of the notebook, which is more compatible and quite efficient from the numerous reviews.
I have owned over 6 different kinds of coolers... the crappiest ones were the Antec and Belkin ones... worthless.. and cheap.
If you have a gaming notebook, you want as much cooling for it as possible... why not give a small investment to make that happen.
A notebook cooler would have to make breakfast to be worth $50. I don't care how good it is, it's not going to do a 500% better job of cooling the laptop at 500% the cost.
All laptops get hot on the bottom - and the vents on the bottom are intakes for cooling air that typically exhausts at the rear of the laptop. With no air movement along the bottom, the hot air radiated off the bottom is then sucked in the vents for cooling the components. So all a laptop cooler has to do to be effective is pull the radiated heat away. The fan vents on the cooler don't have to be perfectly aligned with anything to do an effective job of that.
The only way one cooler would be dramatically more effective than another would be if it was custom designed to introduce cool air to the exact position of the intake vents, but all coolers I've seen pull air away, rather than blow air at the bottom. And this one doesn't appear any different in that regard.
Maybe those who hang around in notebook forums have too much cash on their hands... this is Fatwallet, quite the opposite!
I'd be willing to pay a little more for a cooler that fits squarely under my 17" laptop but this doesn't appear to be one of those.
This is an awesome cooler. I'm very cheap, but if you really want something that cools this is the real deal. I spent a lot of time researching these when my Dell 6000 was having heating issues and finally purchased this one and haven't regretted it at all.

I actually have one of the largest 17" notebooks out there that weighs about 12 pounds.
I spent about $3000 building it back in March 2006... so I would say $50 is a pretty good investment to help cool down a high-end notebook.
This is the only notebook cooler that is effective in cooling down this beast compared to any others on the market.

If you know about high-end and custom notebooks, you should have come across my name already.
If you have a gaming notebook, this will definitely help. If you have a basic use notebook, this might not do much or be worth it.
I called and the lady on the phone said that it was in store only. She did mention that if the item was cheaper online, I could walk into the store and they would sell it at the lower online price. There are no Fry's here on the east coast. We only have Worst-Buy and Target-less.
