Ok, this must be the lowest price 1.5TB drive I have seen yet....

Black Friday sale available now:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (bare drive) for $119.99 LINK

Shipping is included. Works out to $0.08 per GB...so try your luck on this problem ridden drive....maybe you'll get lucky and get a non-defective/non-frozen drive.

This is also the one plagued with the firmware problems. Stay away esp. if you're going to use it as your boot drive. For data this will be OK if you don't mind it timing out every now and then.

They're supposedly working on firmware updates but tbh if they haven't find the problem by now and came up with a fix, they're not trying hard enough.

Hmmm I guess you are wrong once again

This can be picked up at TigerDirect for around $104 after 15% CashBack from Live.

Well actually, they released the new firmware that fixes the problem yesterday... PCmag was just slow in picking it up.

Actually the firmware was released to ARs on Monday. I listened to the web conference announcing the release and Seagate's lead engineer statement that these NEVER exhibited any of the reported problems in PC environment. After two months of extensive testing on over 500 drives they could not replicate ANY of the reported freeze-ups in a PC environment even with when the customer’s return actual drives reported to have those problems in a PC environment were tested. The problem and firmware update applies ONLY to Linux and Mac multi-drive installs. IOW all the hysteria was just that: hysteria. Naïve posters posting FUD like the one above who never even owned one of these let alone experienced the problem first hand.

at the torrent site that is related to demon robots the firmware patch was posted a day or two ago..

FYI you do realize installing the new firmware on a drive being used in a PC environment will actually cause a performance decrease? That is why Seagate is requiring you contact them for the firmware vs posting it one their public download site. You might want to read the official Seagate firmware thread here before arbitrarily installing it on your Seagate.

well, i find it hard to believe that this was all hysteria.

i don't find it hard to believe that the lead engineer/seagate may not admit to any problems. that's what companies/corporations do.

i'm still staying away from this drive even at this price. 5-year warranty everybody goes on about. i personally will take a 3-year warranty if it means i don't have to go through the headache of losing data (huge amounts at these sizes) and RMA'ing a brand new drive right out the gate.

Almost clicked submit on the TigerDirect order then I saw tax in TX, which killed the deal or atleast no better than the deal from OP w/Newegg. Ah well.

For 119.00 I'm in for one. It has a 5 year warranty and I've dealt with warranty issues before and had no problems concerning hard drives...if there is a problem then I do the download, if the download doesn't fix it I get a refurbed drive most likely or possibly a new drive. Seagate has tons of these out there and I'm sure if there is an issue that it will be resolved. Good find OP and repped!

In for one at this price.

I just ordered one from TD also. My $18.00 CB is already showing up as pending. This is cheaper than the 25% CB from eBay I just did 3 days ago. I now have (2) 1.5tb drives for my EX470 homeserver... 2 more to go.

I ordered 2 for my Ex470 also. Can't wait to start consolidating data on to EX470 from various external and internal drives I have. I have read few reviews and will take my chance on these in the Windows/PC environment.

Or get Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA Internal Hard Drive from Dell for $88.99.

Dell Home has the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 7200RPM/32MB 3.5" Internal SATA Hard Drive for a low $88.99 after $40 off Coupon Code: 9BPJP5C2PHKMMC (Exp 11/28). $6.99 Shipping. Tax in most places.

Thanks to ganjagadget in the other thread.

please elaborate more. I am also in the boat for getting 2 of 1.5TB for EX470 server.

Ah figures. My 1.5TB just came in and I paid $150. Well, I'll just have to consider picking up another at $120.

Don't feel too bad, I picked 2 up at $180

Hmm... ~$104 for 1.5TB Seagate or ~$65 for 1TB Hitachi...

In any case, thanks OP.

I wish I could get that in TX

TigerDirect has it for $119.99 with $1.99 shipping. You can get 15% CashBack through MS Livecash. Total = $103.98 shipped after shipping and CashBack.

When I did a search on live.com for items I kept getting a 5% link for TD but when I typed "Tiger Direct" in the search window, 15% link showed up.

Thanks, just got 2 of this baby at TD. Will hook it up with EX470.

Btw, do you guys take out the stock 500GB or just leave it as the system drive? I guess 500GB is good for system drive.

My understanding is that WHS is not using any hardware RAID. It might use software RAID.

I just worry about if one of this drive fail, I might lose all of data.

Anyway, 3.5TB should be enough for me. I plan to use it as share folders and web/app/db servers. no need to do PC backup though.

And my 15% CB shows up now.

God 2 and TD as well. Even with tax in TX it is better deal than Newegg.

Sales Tax TX, NC, IL, FL $21.19
Order Total $263.16
TigerDirect, Inc. $36.00 Pending CashBack

Thanks for the plug 7890! =:-'>

Also:

People are getting these for as low as $65.40:

mikes929292 said:Just an FYI to sweeten the deal for a few minutes extra work...

Bought $100 Dell gift card codes from eBay @ 10% off face + 25% Live CashBack then used those combined with 3% Dell Home CashBack (from here) to buy my 2 drives for $75 ea. shipped to my door. It saved me about $25 more per drive and should work great for the HP EX470 Home Server that just showed up.

Thanks OP!

Just bought another one going this route and my end cost after FatCash and live.com is $65.40
Thanks again OP & mikes929292

I bought a 1TB from Dell about a month ago and I do notice the drive shuttering. I have ran several diagnostics on the drive and can not get it to fail a single test, but I do notice that it will freeze up for a few seconds at a time, and then immediately resume operations as normal.

Just ordered one from TigerDirect

Search Live.com for "computer desktop" and click 15% CashBack ad on the right

Product Total $119.99
Shipping & Handling $1.99
Sales Tax TX, NC, IL, FL $0.00
Order Total $121.98
- $18 Live.com CashBack

Final Total $103.98

One thing to note when considering TD or the Egg. The Egg allows returns with in 30-days while TD is clear that once you sign for the package the drive is your problem. For some the approximately $13.00 between the two (given the Eggs 2.75% CashBack) may be worth less than the ability to return a drive to the vendor given its history. I went with TD anyway but I have my doubts now.

it seems that this is what TigerDirect has been saying about anything it has been putting on sale lately? SVA 24" was the same

very good point, I ordered my TD and going with Newegg.

I recently RMA'ed a DOA drive back to Newegg and an older drive to Seagate. The Seagate RMA process was much better. Newegg's RMA process required me to send the drive back at my own expense (despite the fact that it was DOA) which cost roughly $9 UPS. Once Newegg received the drive, they sent a replacement; a total of 1.5-2 weeks total time.

With Seagate, I did an "advanced replacement" option for $20. Submitted the RMA on Monday, replacement drive was shipped Tuesday via 2nd day UPS, and will include a pre-paid return label. So for +$11 I cut 1.5 weeks time and it's far more convenient for me b/c I don't have to find a box, package the drive, make a label, etc.

In other words, if your TD drive is bad, don't sweat it. The return process is easier with Seagate and, for a couple extra bucks, very convenient.

Sam

I just ordered 2 from TD. Being in California didn't have to worry about tax and shipping was only 2 bucks. Also did 2 HIS 4850 cards in the order. Might as well save on shipping. With the 15% CashBack makes the whole bundle a pretty good deal when building a new system.

If you are maxed out or weary about live CashBack, CompUSA (owned by tiger) is another option
2 drives, ($119 x 2) - (4% CashBack) - ($20 paypal off $200) + $1.99ship = $105.24 per drive shipped. No Tax for me in NJ.

I have returned 3 drives to Seagate (one I wrapped in foam for noise reduction, but must have gottent too hot, one I dropped, a third just died after 3 years 24x7 use). Easy return process. Once they sent me back a better drive (+20 extra GB). Much better than Newegg RMA process which I have had trouble with in the past.

K, with the 30% live CB on eBay, got this for $93.08 shipped after CB from live. This beats the TigerDirect deal esp for me since I live in TX and would have to pay tax. If my math is right, works out to be a little over 6cents/gig. All I can say is OMG, this is insane.

Is that 4% from FW CashBack you are referring to? That's better than live's 2.5% for Newegg anyway.

Is it safe to get a HD from a eBay seller? At least with Newegg, they'll ship you another one if it comes up fugged up. I dont think the eBay guys are that great about returns.

Also the cheapest I saw on eBay was 148... It will still cost $103 shipped, which is a $17 difference from Newegg. I'm not sure if saving $17 is worth the hassle in case the drive comes in inoperable.

See my post if you bought one of these drives and are having trouble with it (as I did), the post is in the computers forum.
