As a TiVo analog customer, I'm underwhelmed by this deal. They have yet to contact me concerning any kind of upgrade offer. As a former cable marketer, I see that they're asleep at the switch as they lose customers by the boatload.

My yearly subscription ends the end of the month and does not renew... and it certainly won't if they try any trickery by charging me anything as they've done with others, as I changed my credit card to a Norton rebate Visa card with $2 left on it as my payment option!

Read the love/hate reviews on Amazon before you buy.

Me? I wish Replay would somehow get reincarnated, since the only option for me is a Comcast DVR, which truly sucks.

One excerpt from Amazonian reviews:

First - The Love:
* TiVo's best feature- its great being able to watching programs on "your" schedule and not the "TV program" schedule.
* Skipping thru the junk and commercials is heaven.
You can watch 2 or 3 programs using TiVo in the same time you watch
one live show.
* Menus are easy to use and it's "smart" ! TiVo can find your programs, advise if you have recording conflicts, has a program recommendation feature based on your preferences, can download movies from Amazon and Netflix, watch You Tube, and a whole list of great feature that is growing.
* Dual channel HD is very nice and TiVo is addictive !
It will drive you nuts to have to watch a "live" program once your use to TiVo and you will soon be buying another unit once the other member of the family horde in on "your TiVo" - lol.

Now the Hate:
* DO NOT purchase the lifetime subscription service !!
Unless you're a addicted gambler or a fool - there is a very very good chance you will be parted from a huge (400.00) chunk of your wallet. The service subscription is for the life of the "unit" and
--- TiVo reliability is abysmal !!! ---
Some research on diff web forums as well as TiVo's 30 day replacement (no charge) and 1 yr limited replacement (min of 40.00 charge) will attest to the this.
* I bought 2 TiVo HD units and both have failed in the first year. I have read a lot of reviews about folks having units for years with no problems - but beware..
there are also a LOT of units that have had problems, been replaced multiple times, and or just become useless after the 1 year limited warranty is up.
* And if you are thinking - Wow what a great rebate !
O-boy... another disaster ! Several calls to customer service, rebate service, tech service, and the janitor and you may finally get it. Let me know cause I'm still waiting.

As much as I love the TiVo when its working,
I would not recommend this unit to anyone due to very lousy warranty and reliability. And PLEASE don't get sucked into buying a "lifetime" TiVo subscription unless you like just love to gamble or waste money !!!

Personally, I'll be attempting to squeeze some sort of retention deal out of them, or I'll be hooking up my old Replay again.

I've had the exact opposite experience with my TiVo's. I own three, and have bought a total of four ... all with Lifetime Subs that have more than paid for themselves (aside from my HD TiVo which hasn't passed the break-even point yet). TiVo destroys all other DVRs out there (aside from maybe FiOs, which I haven't tried).

It's not as bad as you make it out to be ... at least in my experience.

jonnashville said: Me? I wish Replay would somehow get reincarnated, since the only option for me is a Comcast DVR, which truly sucks.

I guess DirectTV just bought up the ReplayTV technology (the service is still being served by DNNA from what I understand), so I guess the possibility is there.

I have two 5040s that I love and I just bought another one off eBay to give as a christmas present. The biggest downside as you know, is that the replays are SD and, IMO, not the highest quality SD encoding either. That being said, I love my replays and am still using the one I got 6 years ago. The couple hundred bucks I spent on the lifetime subscription was completely worth it.

I paid 1100 for my series 3 and lifetime transfer the day it came out. NO REGRETS.

Interesting OT article: http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/26/tivo-economics/

Average hourly earnings are around $18, suggesting that TiVo saves time that could otherwise have been sold for around $108 per week. We should also add in the benefit of higher quality television — around $11 per week — and subtract the cost of the annoying service charge, which is around $3 per week, yielding net benefits of $116 per week, or $6,000 per year. The net present value of this flow is around $120,000 per person, or perhaps around a quarter of a million dollars per household. Wow.

Another excellent Amazonian review here comparing it to Dish and Verizon Fios.

Comparing TiVo to any other competitor is like comparing Apples to crappy sub-par DVRs. There is a reason for the fierce customer loyalty, and that is a vastly superior product.

This is last years "deal" re-heated a/a bigger drive tossed in

I recently bought an openbox Series 3 TiVo from NFM for $149. Tried to activate it online but TiVo said the unit had already been activated...I thought WTF?
Did a system check and the unit already has lifetime service. Apparently,TiVo gave lifetime service to some "demo" units they placed in electronics retailers.

Know I lucked out and we will see how long it lasts but for now I'm a happy camper.

BTW, this is my 4th TiVo and they all have been great---much better than the cable co DVR.

Is this not active yet? Did anyone try adding it to their cart?

When I click on the "Buy Now" button, I get the message: "Sorry, this TiVo Service Number does not qualify for this offer. If you feel you received this message in error and would like to confirm your eligibility, please call (877) 289-8486 to speak with a Customer Service Representative."

I think you have to have received the original TiVo email to be eligible. The email lists the TSN they have on file for you that is eligible for the offer (or at least mine did.)

My experiences...

TiVo S2 with Lifetime - $350 (6 years)
TiVo S3 with Lifetime - $850 (2 years)
TiVo HD with Lifetime - $600 (1 + years)
Laughing at everyone who tries to justify their sub-par DVR by bashing TiVo for their reliability/price/whatever - Priceless

There are some things I can always justify...a real TiVo is one of them.

my Sony branded series 1 analog TiVo turned 7 years old this past august, got it as a gift with lifetime subscription and it still works flawlessly...my brother has the same one and also has had no problems (other than we cant use voip to make the dialup calls) my parents have a hughes branded TiVo with their satellite service that is about 4-5 years old and also with a lifetime subscription, again, no problems so far, other than the cooling fan in the back seems to be getting louder...

but on the same token, i have read about the hit or miss quality of the newer devices as well...

as far as the lifetime sub, on occasion, TiVo will offer to transfer the lifetime subscription (for a fee of course) if you upgrade your unit...at least it was offered to me in the past...

The other thing about the life of the unit itself - what fails? If it's the HD, then it's a simple matter to replace it.

and if anything does happen to a TiVo, it is usually a hard drive issue. a 1 TB HD is under $100 now so it is a cheap fix anyway which will more than triple your recording capabilities.

This is only for qualified customers

Sorry it looks like the offer is only for qualified members. Someone already jumped on this deal for the link.

For those of you who have TiVo, I know this will sound stupid, but here it goes: I already have cable with a tuner box. Does this replace the tuner box? Also, my cable comes with On Demand. Does this work with On Demand? Thanks for the help.

No it doesn't work with On Demand and you will have to get a dual tuner cable card from you cable company to be able to view HD channels.

Does this have QAM tuner. No digital subscription here.

f2000sa said: Does this have QAM tuner. No digital subscription here.

No it does not. You would have to get a cable card and a digital subscription.

JohnPg82 said: f2000sa said: Does this have QAM tuner. No digital subscription here.

The unit DOES have a QAM tuner, the problem is there is no guide data for those channels and you would have to do a manual recording for the time and channel. That defeats one of the biggest features TiVo has.

I'd still like to get in on this deal + CashBack. Anyone know if the TSN would be tied to the purchase or it's just a hurdle to get through the first link?

What doesn't make sense to me is that TiVo only offers this deal to existing customers. Granted with this deal, it's not like you'll become a monthly subscriber and therefore not provide TiVo with additional revenue. As others have pointed out, it's not exactly the deal of the century (please link to the $200 non-eBay new TiVos), but it's one of the better deals out there for me. I'm buying it as a gift and the 30-day money back guarantee from TiVo would be nice if my sister doesn't like the device.

I'm not a TiVo customer myself, but I run a MythTV box with a firewire-enabled cable box (SA3250). I wouldn't give MythTV as a gift to anyone without a lot of spare time to tinker.

I have TiVo and while this deal is ok, it is not a barn-burner. I'd prefer to buy a unit of eBay, then get the lifetime deal for $350 or so also from eBay, get CashBack for both and end up with a grand total of about $450 for both.

I am skeptical of "lifetime" deals, especially with companies that are perennial money-losers. Caveat emptor.

I'm sure I'll get red from the TiVo lovers. It is a great product, but the company is not in great shape (latest quarterly results with one-time lawsuit settlement money notwithstanding).

That d##n eBay deal trumps every deal.

Lifetime, in this case, refers to your TiVo specific unit.

I bought my TiVo in 2001 and have paid over a $1,000 in monthly service fees. I could have bought 3 lifetime service contracts for what I've paid in monthly service fees. I haven't had any problems with the unit and I upgraded it with 2 x 120GB internal disk drives about 6 years ago. I also have an old Panasonic Showstopper/Replay TV unit that came with lifetime service in 1999. It is still going strong but I did have to replace an 80GB internal disk drive that I had put in 8 years ago to replace the original 30GB drive. These units are very reliable if you take care of them.

I'd like to get a TiVo HD unit to replace my Series 2 unit but I'm waiting for a better deal. I'm a little leary of buying one of the eBay units and they don't appear to be any cheaper than the refurb units directly from TiVo.

The XL version is $300 more. Only difference I see is going from 20 to 150 hours Of HD recording. Anybody know how big these hard drives are? How easy is it to replace the hard drive yourself?

i know! and with hard drive plummeting, i have been so temped to upgrade to get more recording time but it runs like a champ so i have been holding off...

I paid $199 for lifetime on my TiVo series 1 about 6 years ago, I think I made out OK. they even let me upgrade and transfer the lifetime license to a Series 2 when it came out. They won't, however, let me do the same to move to a TiVo HD.

Given that my second DVR from Comcrap is $20.95/month, it will only take 30 months to buy the box and have lifetime service. I'll take that bet. I can buy an extra 65 hours of HD recording for $125 or so with an expansion drive, can't do that on the Motorola box at all.

If anybody received this email and has not used their offer, could you please pm the link? Thank You.

looks like this deal is still valid? Also appears that you can connect an external sata drive for more storage, so the deal for the cheaper one is better.

I need to find out if time warner offers the same HD programming for cablecard as they do their STB.

edit nevermind:

The TiVo Service number associated with this request has already been used for this offer. If you feel you received this message in error and would like to confirm your eligibility, please call (877) 289-8486 to speak with a Customer Service Representative.

The HDXL has a WD 1TB drive installed....I just upgraded 1 of my TivoHD this past week to a WD10-EVCS 1TB drive(best drive)drive was $110.00 install takes about a 1/2-1hr. complete!

That is why I was asking if anybody didn't use their offer. I believe you can still use it if you have the unique customer number for the url if it has not been used.

I'm not in HD yet buy have a TiVo series 2 that I've hacked (records 448 hours now) and I also have the lifetime subscription. It's way more than paid for itself in the close to 4 years that I've had it. I think I got the TiVo close to FAR and paid $199? for the lifetime.

Im not sure what "problems" people are speaking of. It's just a basic motherboard with a hard drive. What's there to break? A hard drive??? Go out & buy another one. They are only $50 or so & the reliability of the drive has nothing to do with a reflection on the TiVo brand.

Don't know how the HD models will age, but a swelled capacitor on a failed power supply is not "uncommon" for some Series two's. This too is fixable, but it's a hassle and if you pay someone to fix it,it will cost you. I guess the lifetime sub is a little bit of a gamble. As long as you're lucky, it's a good deal.
