I realize it's not a hot deal, but I wanted you to know...

You can now subscribe to your custom views, and receive a notice when matching topics are posted.

If you have yet to experience the power of Hot Deals custom views, this is a great time to give it a try!
Custom Views are currently available in modern.* Saving and subscribing requires login.

Experiment and have fun! Let us know any questions. Here are a few sample views:

Hot Deals > Cameras & Photo
Hot Deals > Cameras & Photo, by Canon
Hot Deals > Cameras & Photo, by Canon, at Newegg
Hot Deals > Cameras & Photo, by Canon, at Newegg, with free shipping
Or more specific with Hot Deals > Cameras & Photo/ Memory Card/ MicroSD Card.
Or more general like Computers & Electronics.
Or any combination of the above. The possibilities are endless!
Toys, Kids & Baby, at Amazon? Yes.
Plasma TV? You can do it!
Simply save or…

Subscribe to it!
Click “subscribe to view” and you’ll receive an email (instant or daily) notifying you when new topics are posted in your chosen view. Heck, you can even receive via RSS. Manage your new View Alerts at my account / view alerts.

*Thoughts on the future of Custom View setting (how ‘bout exclusions?), Modern vs. Classic (What would it take?), etc are welcome in FatWallet Member Suggestions or elsewhere in FatWallet forum. Thanks!

Apologies to those who were following this thread initially... I had some issues moving it around and needed to start a new one.

Great idea proposed by Zxavion2 to add Ratings to custom views/subscriptions. In other words, set a threshold above which you'd like to be notified. We'll work on that.

Thanks for the props, I still think that would be a great idea

Keep up the good work!

How quickly are the topics posted to their respective categories? Will I get emailed more quickly using this method or using the classic subscription service?

Red for "Custom Views are currently available in modern"

FW created Modern against the wishes of many users. If you want to only add features to the modern interface, then expect lots of red red red until we all defect to SD.

PS: This is not a HOT DEAL. Shame on you. Just because you can (violate the forums rules as a moderator), doesn't mean you should.

Would like to see the ability to include rating in to the subscription

Are you guys also working on giving users access on posting thread with pictures and include attachment? like, rebate form?

great, the webmaster is implementing more functions.

SSi said: Are you guys also working on giving users access on posting thread with pictures and include attachment? like, rebate form?

I could've sworn someone came up with this idea SEVERAL YEARS AGO, to keep a copy of rebate forms on FW site; and I think I know him....

Oh well, better late than never.

SteveDuke2003 said: How quickly are the topics posted to their respective categories? Will I get emailed more quickly using this method or using the classic subscription service?Good question. Hot Deal topics take about 5 minutes on average to be categorized. So Custom View Alerts are not faster, but different. For example, watching the whole category of "toys" or "men's clothes" whereas neither might be in the title for topic alerts. Or... all the cool examples in my OP. With that flexibility does come a small price in time.

Anything and everything that requires a "Modern view" will be ignored.
Lately, SD is my deafult site for Hot deals and FW the default site for finance.

Thanks for explaining your red vote; I appreciate that.

I'm sure you've noticed most new features have been added to both views. Custom View Alerts just couldn't be added to Classic since there are no Custom Views there. Please join the solution and tell us what it would take to meet your needs here: What would it take?.

nm i got it.

Spare me. Some of us like the modern view, some of us don't. If you like the classic interface, fine.. You will have reduced functionality.. It is expensive to keep up a website and it is silly to do double coding to keep a minority of users happy. If you do not like the "Modern View" give suggestions to fix it, rather than threaten like a petulant child to go to other sites. (Which I have been to and found far more annoying than FW)

Don't be silly, he is a moderator and is posting in order to relay information that many of us may want to use, but would otherwise be unaware of.

I think the moderators know that many of the people visiting their site go directly to the Hot Deals forum and announcements would have to be posted in Hot Deals in order to be seen.

Thanks to FW for adding these new features, I can appreciate the effort it takes to help me find great deals.

Just wondering, are you one of the few folks that are also complaining about how they won't be able to watch anymore TV from your 1980's black and white TV when the switch to digital TV broadcasting is implemented in 2009? It's just not fair, why are they developing cool shiet for digital channels while not improving the analog channels? It's just not fair.... blah blah

*cough* I still heard that "some" libraries still have microfiche readers for those who refuse to move to modern stuff... *cough*

just my take

hey footn200!

Hope your trip / time off went well!

To touch on the new add: GREAT!

To touch on the posting in HD: GREAT (cuz you have the right to post anywhere you feel necessary to reach the most people)!

People, give FW a break about "breaking rules"... its THEIR freakin' site!!! They can put ANYTHING they want anywhere... in order for you to see it!

To touch on classic vs. modern: this MAY be the thing that finally makes me switch.... but ONLY after FW listens to all the suggestions, and addresses the INTELLIGENT ones, rather than ignoring MOST of them, and fixing the easy ones!

*Tell Tim I said "HI!!!", and happy holidays to all the WONDERFUL people at FW (and FWF)... to include the people RUNNING the show, but never get to post (Admins, coders, marketing, advertising, and Facilities!).

oh jeez, give it up...why don't you all just start to crawl back in...

The real question - where is a deal worth being alerted to anymore? ...just sayin'...

sorry, hate the modern view

sorry, I dislike the modern view

MagicRabbit said: sorry, I dislike the modern view

Sorry, Ditto.

Remember, discussion on Modern/Classic is over here.

Why can't I see the "subscribe to view" option? Could someone please post specific instructions, since I seem to be missing something. Thanks

Edit: NM, it showed up after I posted this message? Looks like there may be a bug in the change.

I, for one, appreciate the heads up. I do not have the knowledge of the ins and outs of this site and would have missed it. I also appreciate all of the deals I have found on FW and do not bite the hand that feeds me. zag

Slightly OT but --> I still want the ability to save a search as a Custom View.

For example, many times I search the Hot Deals Forum for "wireless". Instead of having to click in the search box, enter the text, click go, and then click the "last post" column to sort the results (which actually come up under the 'Classic' view), why can't I just save the search and then click once in my Custom View bar each time I want to use it??

Saving the search seems like a pretty cool idea, actually.

Custom View Alerts may be somewhat helpful... When you search for "wireless" are you looking for all things wireless? Check out the image I attached in this post to see what our Views suggest when you key in "wireless" within categories. As it stands now, you can click on any of those terms (plus stores, manufacturers, deal types if you choose), save, and subscribe to the view. Saving gets you one-click access to that view. Subscribing gets you emailed any time a new topic is posted in that view. Now, granted, if you are interested in various types of wireless products, it would take more than one 'view'.

In short , thanks for the bright idea; maybe we can implement it. And, I hope you find some good utility in this new custom view alert feature.

Another cool opportunity with your Custom Views...

Once saved, your views will show as optional content for your Daily Update email from FatWallet. There are so many cool options in our Daily Update now... you just have to check 'em out!

looks like the custom view needs little bit more work to make it effective...

Check out this thread: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/889108/

Instead of putting it under restaurants, it pick up the first known value in the body context. In this case, california pizza kitchen became the category.

Thanks! Real live humans do the categorizing, and we're working on improving the quality (accuracy) of that process. I appreciate your example to help us get better.

EDIT to add: Looks like we've updated categories according to your suggestion.

Thanks, that is what I have been doing for the time being. The "wireless" thing was just an example. Hopefully you can implement a Saved Search View or something similar.

Oh, and thanks for listening to your users !!

I don't even remember what classic looks like and had to go check. The classic/modern argument is getting silly now but I guess people will always have their complaints.

As for the custom view alerts, I personally never use the custom view and like to keep it closed but new features are always a good thing, so long as it doesn't mean removing existing features.

This is the only forum I look at regularly, so I, for one, appreciate the fact that FW posted information about this feature here. And "shame on you"? Really?

Actually, I think this is a good reason for me to try the modern view again

i also want to be able to search the custom views

i would like to combine views so that i could do something like this:

Hot Deals > Cameras & Photo, by Canon ***OR*** Nikon

so multiple selections from each of the 3 filter categories rather than one selection from each of the 3 filter categories.
