What if you load the 1.5 TB drive with movies. Will it be slow?

Well, with approximate 100 movies, it took around 30 secs to finish scanning. I am guessing that it scans every files then determine which would be photo, audio, video and others. So the more files you load up in the hard drive would increase the scan time. I definitely would not recommend loading thousands JPEG files. Another way to cut down the scan time is to keep the DVD files in ISO format rather than VOBs. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

i have a huge dvd collection that is in iso and img format. i see iso mentioned but do i need to extract the vob's from the img or can it read that container too?

I'm in the same boat as an above poster.. i'm using a 500Gb modded Xbox & am wondering what functionality I'd gain with this unit - of course, i can't play from a USB drive, but I have my DVD player for that.

I'm replacing my xbmc with wdtv. xbox only play Standard Definition movies. NO H264 in 702p/1080p. If you happy with crappy sd resoultion then you should stay with xbox modded.

No component output (only HDMI and composite) and no wireless/lan connection. You want that you pay more for a popcorn unit.

I picked one up in January and love it. After the firmware update the only complaint I have left at this point is it still does not power-down USB drives attached to it when shut off. Not a big deal with sticks but I have an external laptop drive and would be more comfortable if it shut down.

Here is what I don't understand. The external HD has its own power source. It's not like running dependently and use power souce from WD (like usb stick) so the when you shut the WD down it shuts down the ext. HD also. May be there is something I am missing.

I have attached a passport drive, and it powered it just fine. Turned it off when the box was off. They now have 500Gb versions so that might be usable considering there is two USB ports.

I have a WD 1 TB external drive that I will be hooking up to it, but I have to wonder if it might do the shutdown with WD-only devices or controllers. (at least that was my hope).

I love the device and it has worked wonderfully!

Anything other than vob ? I'm assuming vob is ok

there are media player like this but they also have hard drives.. this attaches it's self to the hard drive. for the same price you might consider a standalone version like this one Media player hard drive enclosure

I'd take the WD name over eBay special any day. HDD and enclosures are cheap.

I tried .iso file. The unit recognized it but just play the files within all in one big chapter. Can't skip or fast forward. there isn't any menu navigation. I'm returning the unit and get the Popcorn Hour A110.

I'm very tempted but can someone who owns this comments a little more about the standard DVD or DVD ISO playback? I typically would rip my DVD's to ISO or File rip into VOB.

Can anyone comment on their experience? Someone had mentioned about some issues with not being able to get to the menu or navigation? I am also strongly considering the Popcorn Hour which has more features but is more expensive and the UI is not a sleek and straight forward.

I tried it. It plays VOB file with subtitle and multiple audio track. But it won't show any DVD menu navigation. I tried .ISO, the device recognized the file but play as one giantic video file without any chapter. Can't even fast forward too.

I ordered Popcorn Hour A110. it's twice as expensive as this WD TV device. But to me the DVD menu navigation is more important than buying something that plays only VOB file. I saw this video on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jBfpTJbG4c

I asked him if the A110 can play back DVD (either .ifo or .iso) with menu navigation? that's his reply

"It will do both, though in past firmwares I had a couple .iso files that would lock up. When I ripped them down to ifo/vob I had no problems. This problem should have been rectified in later firmwares."

There's also volume control on the remote too. That's what i need too.

@takyc.. many thanks for your valuable feedback.

If ripped as VOB, are you able to fast forward and are the chapters maintained? Can you confirm on not being able to power off 2.5" USB drives when unit powers off?

I did see the reviews of the A110 and I like it if I was the primary user but I'm trying to make my wife's life easier because we have tons of kids dvds and the idea is to create a DVD library with easy to use UI and playback.

There were a few points of concern for me on the popcorn which is making it hard to decide:
1) The interface did not seem to be as straight foward and one reviewer said that it was a bit complicated. Given that my wife would be the primary user, I'd like a simpler and cleaner interface.
2) Somewhat moot point if I strictly use ext HD but I did not see a fan for the int HD. So it is possible that it may heat up quite a bit unless I opt for an int 2.5 drive.
3) Price

After shipping and sale tax (in CA), it ends up almost $250 for me. Is it out of your budget? If so, it doesn't matter for the interface and the fan.

Anyone know where can I find a good one with the RM/RMVB support?

Thanks.

I think RM/RMVB they are licensed to RealOne company, and you gotta pay for supporting them.....

I know my 2.5" Passport drive stays on when the unit is turned off. I usually just unplug the drive when done. This is even with the new firmware....

i'm trying to push ther engineers to make this device play audio files seamlessly, gapless.
you can open an incident on their site and submit questions.

i'm telling them the pause beteeen playing files is harsh when listening to albums that are meant to transition from song to song without a pause.

i'm suprised so many digital media devices lack this simple capability. it's the one thing that the CD still has over these DMP devices.
