Wonder if it has divx support. To bad they didnt throw a network card on it for the Mybook networkable (or people like me who network it through a server). Anyone own one of these that can vouche for Divx 4 or higher support? Would like one of these for my bedroom since i use a moded Xbox in my livingroom
Has fine divx support. Firmware was updated recently and helps functionality a lot. Remote sucks but Harmony's support it.
No component output (only HDMI and composite) and no wireless/lan connection. You want that you pay more for a popcorn unit.
I picked one up in January and love it. After the firmware update the only complaint I have left at this point is it still does not power-down USB drives attached to it when shut off. Not a big deal with sticks but I have an external laptop drive and would be more comfortable if it shut down.

divx, xvid, 1080p mkv's, this thing plays everything I throw at it. There are plenty of discussion threads from older deals, and of course an infinitely long thread at avsforums. i'd link, but i'm too lazy, do some digging.
also, don't forget to upgrade the firmware, this probably won't have it already loaded (came out in late dec i think)

A bit off topic, but does anyone know if they make hdmi -> component adapters? My receiver has no hdmi and I need to output to two sources with a component splitter, so i'm stuck watching it on tv only for now, no big screen projector.
Be sure to upgrade to the latest 1.01 version firmware. Fixes numerous subtitle and other issues as reported by users in the first 2 months it was out:

Thank you! One more question though. Could I use a PS3 Component cable? It looks as if it converts and HDMI to component signal, but I don't own a PS3 so I can't confirm. Here's a Newegg link if anyone wants to help...Text

That's a proprietary connector for the PS3, it's not an HDMI connector on the end. Monoprice has an adapter that converts component to HDMI, but not sure if it works the other way around. It's pretty cheap though, $44.

Here is what I don't understand. The external HD has its own power source. It's not like running dependently and use power souce from WD (like usb stick) so the when you shut the WD down it shuts down the ext. HD also. May be there is something I am missing.

If you're an EPP you get another 7% off.
How do you get this 7% extra? Sorry but what is EPP? thanks

The portable external drive (2.5 inch harddrives) does not have powersource.. It uses power from the usb drive..

Just ordered one. Thanks OP! I have been wanting to have a home theater PC but this seems like a less expensive and easier option. No big deal to shuttle the hard drive back and forth from the PC when adding new content to it.
I noticed that it has to UBS ports. I'll have my WD Passport 500GB drive attached to it most of the time, but does anybody know if you can plub a flash drive into it?
taison said: Why would you buy this? You have to buy an external USB harddrive also. Isn't that a lot of cables hanging everywhere?
Well if you consider the audience... most of us already have an external hard drive....or 14 So not really a big deal. And not any more cables than you likely already have running all over the place. Couple of power cords, one USB and a HDMI cable...doesn't seem to bad to me.

This is prefect media player for someone like me who doesn't want a big and bulky pc/laptop with wireless keyboard/mouse around living room. It plays all the format(my collection of DVD backup, AVC from HD camcorder, family album,mp3)and only use 7w instead streaming from pc and waste electricity.

I read on some forums that the max hard drive size you can hook up to this is 320GB. Is that true?

I'm interested in one of these things-
but i did read that it cannot play FLAC gapless. i'm surfing around on the WD forums and elsewhere to see if they plan to add gapless suport in a future firmware. non-gapless playback is rough on live and concept albums....
that's the only thing holding me back from placing the order- that and also the fact i'm already using the 2 HDMI ports on the back of my TV so i need to find a way to connect it. i can't pull any new RGB cables and haven't seen good reviews on HDMI splitters and not sure i want to spend $40 on a HDMI distro center!
Browsed a long thread on avsforum, and could not find a definite answer. I would like to know whether the recent firmware update enable it to play blu-ray iso images ripped by anydvd. If not, which format did you rip your HD-DVD or Blu-ray?
I bought this for my dad. Plays stuff pretty well. Have not upgraded the firmware yet. He is using the 640GB mybook on it.

90% sure it does not play ISO's. You'd have to rip the disc's to their file state. It will play the .ts files.
Quick question, after reading the description, I'm a little confused as to whether or not this device actually converts your .avi, divx, Dvd files on the USB to HD quality on the TV.
Or is it just used as a bridge between the USB and TV which has the ability to play HD quality movies if you have one downloaded on your USB.....?

No it's not. I have a 1TB drive hooked up to mine. It works fine. Because it has an external power supply it also gives me the option of turning the HD off when I want. Overall, I'm very pleased with this unit and I would recommend it to anyone.
Greygooser said: kre0380 said: I read on some forums that the max hard drive size you can hook up to this is 320GB. Is that true?
no. i have 1 tb hooked up.No. That's the largest drive they recommend to do a FIRMWARE upgrade with, IIRC. People have had 1.5 TB drives working fine with this. I have a 640 working fine with mine.
However, the larger the drive, or more specifically, the larger the quantity of files on it will cause a longer time for the system to mount the drive and catalog everything that's on it for instant access later.
So you might not want to put a whole collection of DVD rips on the same drive as thousands of MP3 files and millions of JPG files.
I am not sure what I am missing. What I currently do is I connect my external hard drive to the dvd player with USB/DivX(I have this oneText) . Whats the difference?

This one supports way more formats and codecs. Ok I guess.. My setup seems to work fine for my needs. I have a 300 GB HDD attached to it and serves the purpose.
