I was 'window shopping' at my local WalMart store tonight and came across this item on display and thought it seemed like a good deal for the price!
The laptop has a 8x DVD Super Multi burner, an AMD Athlon 64 processor and a Windows Vista Home basic operating system.
Apart from the one on display there appeared to be at least half a dozen more locked in the cage below.
For anyone wanting a cheap entry level laptop this may be the way to go as opposed to buying a netbook for a similar price.

currently OM has sale on COMPAQ Presario Notebook in their weekly ad. Online order is not accepting but we can pick it up @ store.
though its $120 extra but worth for Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Mobile Processor T3400 with DVD Burner

I picked one in bay area for $508 including tax.

THAT IS NOT A GOOD DEAL AT ALL

and what does it have to do with the thread?

I was unable to ascertain the weight of this model. Would you happen to know, please? Thanks.

6.4lbs is my guesstimate.

The acer laptop is single core.

Some what stupid question because I think I know the answer. But the specs on the Acer show (ripped from another site):
Specs on Acer Aspire 5515
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 2650e (512KB L2 cache, 1.6GHz) < --- not dual core
3GB DDR2 667 SDRAM
160GB SATA hard drive, 5400RPM;
Six-cell battery

Will it play Red Alert 3 which has the following requirements:

System Requirements:
* OS – Windows XP / Vista (32-Bit)
* Processor – XP: 2.0 GHz (Intel Pentium 4; AMD Athlon 2000+; Multiple Cores) / Vista: 2.2 GHz (Intel Pentium 4/AMD Athlon 2200+/Multiple Cores)
* Memory – XP/Vista: 1 GB
* Hard Drive – Media: 6.0 GB / EA Link: 12.0 GB
* DVD Drive - 8 SPEED
* Video Card – NVIDIA GeForce 6800, ATI Radeon X1800 or higher end DirectX 9.0c compatible gfx card
* Sound Card - DirectX 9.0c compatible (Creative Sound Blaster Audigy cards require a Intel P4 2.6 GHz or similar under Vista, Yamaha Xwave-512 not supported)

My confusion is the Athlon 2000+ what is that versus the 2650e.

Guys! I finally bought the machine and I must say - I'm impressed! No, it can't compete with my Lenovo Ideadpad but it serves its purpose as an internet pc.

Does this Acer come with Vista home premium or home basic? If it is not the basic seems like an awful good deal for the price considering 3gb ram and 160 gb hard drive. So does anyone know what kind of processor this has. How does this laptop rank with the other deals out there in the $399 - $450 class.

The Acer comes with home basic. As per 'savers' post above it has an Athlon 64 processor.

I think its a pretty good deal. Again, I would not use it as my main laptop but it serves its function as a cheap internet pc. By the way, what I don't like about this laptop is that it does not have external volume control. It does have an excellent keyboard and the system is built in such a way that fingerprints do not easily smudge the pc.

I see this model auctioned on eBay is for $550 with a downgrade to xp for an extra $65. Is that possible to easily install XP on this laptop? $348 has to be a killer price for this machine since i nearly bought the Acer AS4730-4516 from best buy last week for $399 with 2Gb. The ONLY plus i can see is a wireless 'N' as opposed to 'G'.

Just picked up all my WM had, I noticed the box as rather heavy.

9 pounds 7 ounces

RE:

Plenty.
I like seeing other items pointed out,
especially since I have a friend at my WM who calls me and lets me know when they get these in.
Since I kill it for others, they need to see what else is out there at a low price.

How many you buy yesidonoitall?

Recent completed sales on eBay for this laptop.
The newly listed ones are priced too high.
The one at $414 is only a profit of $37 (if bought tax free)
and it isn't worth $449. But them there is always a few ebayers
that will pay too much.

Does eBay mean low prices always, I think not.

Downgrade to XP procedure for this chipset, drivers, please post..thanx.This unit would probably run a bit faster with this platform i'm sure.

In 4 1, just came across it tonight also. Then found this thread.

Apparently no dial up modem, can anyone confirm that?

What is... a dial up modem?

Ha ha

how many USB ports does this laptop has? I purchased one but have not opened the box.

Just worried that this laptop might be real cheap junk and ultra slow.

Also if you plan to do a clean install of Vista make sure to backup the drivers as they can't seem to be found on the Acer website.

the driver can be found on the C Drive

C:\ACER\Preload\Autorun\DRV\

see this post!!

There are two usb ports and the only means of connecting this computer to the internet is via wireless network or through a broadband ethernet connection.

well an even better deal is he gateway md2614u i hae had one for two weeks nd i love it

I am confused. This seems like a very good deal but why does my local WalMart (Centerville, OH) have 62 of these in stock. Is it poor advertising or is this a clunker? Current owners please advise...

I'd say you have a wise manager.

Or a USB modem.

specs are now posted on the US ACER site:

http://us.acer.com/acer/product.do?link=oln23g.redirect&changedA...

bare bones model without modem, card slot, s-video; still a deal if you don't need those items!

Just bought one from WalMart. Very fast, with lots of junkware on it. Took me half a day to uninstall the junk. There are drivers on the Acer website. Overall a good computer for the price, but don't expect miracles.
