How do these work if you have DirectTV? I have one DVR from them already. Do you just call them and they can add this unit as well or do you have to do something special to get this to work?

This unit does NOT work with DirectTV.

The TiVo HD and Series 3 don't work with satellite.
Thanks. Still haven't made the jump to HD - I don't like the thought of renting a DVR from Time Warner, I'd rather just have my own box. Not to mention I really like the Series2 TiVo. I'll have to call TW and ask them how much it will cost to switch over to HD and get some cable cards.
Scored one of two left @ Tustin, CA. Clearance item. Nice not to be an early adopter on these. Now I got a TiVo HD and lifetime for $500 which used to be the MSRP back in the day of just the box. thanks OP

Anyone try the Sears protection plan? For $30 you can call Sears plan and report TiVo (or other products) is broke and Sears will send you gift card of equal price of product in this case $199, salesman said it is to replace product, he also stated they rarely require you to return product, read info and it states Searsmay require shipping product back at their cost. Basically he was saying call Product protect after 1 year TiVo coverage is up, report TiVo is broke and Sears will send gift card. They may replace but he said he thought Sears was quitting carrying TiVo thus the price. Need to buy plan at time of purchase but have 30 days to refund.

Another possible option - stay with your non-digital cable. I was under the impression from the description on the TiVo site that you DON'T have to use it w/ HD, regualr old cable will work just fine.

If anyone knows something else, please say so.
Yep, it will work fine with SD. I already have a S2 TiVo so I was thinking if I went for the HD one, I might as well switch over to digital and HD. Decisions decisions..

Really want to jump on these, but because this doesn't work with On Demand nor SDV (and I think some cable co's are taking away HD channels) I'm going to hold off. At least until the dongle comes out

What do you mean by "lifetime?" TiVo service? No monthly payment, 1 payment for service updates for life of the box.

Can you sign up for lifetime service at Sears for $300? Where did you get this price for life-time service?

After you sign up for TiVo service, you can create a user account at www.tivo.com and upgrade to a lifetime service level (life of the single box, not of your account). I suspect you may be able to call TiVo and have them do it for you, but I suspect it's easier just to set up your own.
I can't remember if you can setup an account without calling first and then activate your own box at the service level you want.

Time Warner in Albany just started distributing the tuning adapters. My bro-in-law has had his for almost 2 weeks and reports that it works well.
I called the Wilton mall Sears (Saratoga) and purchased one over the phone with my Sears card. 10% off 199.99. total came to 192.xx. I'll go pick it up tomorrow and call Time Warner on the trip up. I can't get rid of their horrible SA 8300HD soon enough!!!
There were 8 more left @ Wilton BTW.

I believe the question was directed at the price. The TiVo web site currently lists lifetime service at $400.
Does this have a built in tuner to pick up unscrambled HD channels. I have about 28 HD channels from comcast for free with my Sharp LCD with QAM at ATSC tuner.

Yes. But for some odd reason they don't include guide data for QAM channels. So you can record them but you have to set manual recordings and it won't know what program it is. There is a ongoing petition to fix this but it doesn't seem like TiVo is listening.
Be sure and look around for the clearance area. I asked the salesman and he said they were out , but I spotted an open box for only $104 after Sears card discount. This was at the Memorial City store in Houston. The only thing missing were the batteries for the remote. Pretty expensive batteries
TiVo is expected to release a True2Way box soon. It will work with VOD and doesn't require the external SDV adapter. Might as well wait.

Bummer is that I just found out that Verizon FIOS charges $79 for a technician to install the cable card ($3.99/mo).
That is very strange because I have FiOS here in lower Westchester NY the Verizon rep told me installation was free.

I was at Circuit City last night and they have them for $179.99 + tax. I thought about getting one but the cost of the box + service + cable card rental + installation ($45 here and you're not getting cable cards w/o it) + TiVo placing ad's everywhere made me decide to hold off. If they came out with a box that didn't require cable cards, cost less than $200 I'll consider it again. There's also the issue of possibly not getting the full list of channels because of SDV. I'll just stick with the cheap one from the cable company. The only real benefit I see over the cable company is the better menu's and the ability to download recorded tv but I can torrent everything with the commercials already take out pretty easy so it's not worth the hassle for me.

Netflix is all the VOD I need and works great with TiVo HD

Purchased one last night for $199. plus $30. for Sears extended coverage. Was in a different store today where they had it for $189. plus $28 for the coverage. Didn't have a Sears card for the extra 10% off
SafetyDance said: So, pick one up at the local office and "install" it yourself. It's not rocket science.
From what I've read online, the company's policy is not to ship out cable cards. And people have posted about trying to buy one at Verizon FIOS locations. If people know otherwise, please let me know.

Thanks, toddler, for the information. Unfortunately, i canceled my monthly subscriptions a long time ago. I still have the lifetime subscription, which came with the S2.
Yes, TiVo had a $199 lifetime transfer promotion back in 2007. Wish i had jumped on that deal.
