This deal is partially a combination of other current promotions that have been discussed in the past. All I did was apply them together.
If you are like me and had comcrap internet but they wouldn't let you have any of their current promotions, this is how you can get a couple months of free ATT dsl to wait while you become re-eligible for the most current comcrap offers. This particular deal requires that you do NOT have a local phone line (new customer) but there are other deals out there already for dry loop service. First you sign up for a local at&t phone line via the fatwallet high speed internet FatCash link and make sure you choose ATT for your long distance provider (ATT has a no-cost long distance plan). In many states ATT has a promotional credit that gives you free phone line hookup ($42 here in MI). After your phone line is set you can then sign up for dsl pro (3M) service ($30/mo) which will qualify you for a $100 internet service rebate and a $79 wireless gateway rebate. Make sure you sign up for dsl online (not over the phone) and use the fatwallet FatCash link again for another $20 CashBack. It may take 1 to 1.5 months of continuous dsl and phone line service to get the rebates but after that the local phone line (and dsl) can be cancelled without penalty (no contracts). Personally I just completed this and it took me ~ 1 month for my first bill to arrive. I then signed up for the ATT account manager service (free) and applied electronically for the two ATT rebates. I had the rebate checks in hand within a week. Even considering the phone line taxes, installation kit/modem shipping charge, etc this deal turns out to be pretty good. If you need faster than pro (3M) service then call after your first bill and ask about "upgrading" to the elite 6M service at pricing comparable to comcast and many of the customer service folks will be willing to give you a rate better than $35/mo (most can get elite or pro for half price for 6 months). All told I'll have 2 months of high speed dsl for free and $21 extra in my pocket. In a few weeks I'll be eligible to switch back to comcrap if I want but personally I'm going to see if I can get the elite (6M) dsl for half price for 6 months and then switch to dry loop to avoid the useless land line and associated costs.
Hope this helps someone…

I have been with comcast for last 3 years and last time they would not give me the promotional price. but they had Comcast economy (1.5Mbps) for $24.95 which I think is a good speed. I was initially planning to do exactly what you did (although I dont need their landline) but felt it was too much of a hassle and signed up for $24.95 slower comcast (which is fine for my needs). By the way I dont have comcast cable and have been able to get 19.99-29.99 multiple times in the past with no interruptions in the past.. HTH

I also downgraded to the comcast economy internet before I tried this ATT deal. I had been with comcrap for the past 8 years and they gave me a vareity of promotions over the years but this time they would not budge. I didn't need/want the ATT land line but it came out cheaper with the rebates so I installed it anyway (just like I used to have comcrap basic cable to save a few bucks on my cable interent). I don't even have a phone hooked up to the land line. The problem with the comcrap economy internet for me was that it was super SLOW! The 3M dsl service I have now is over twice as fast and if I can get the 6M service for half price there won't be anything comcast has that can compare speed/cost wise (especially after switching to dry loop). I was affraid that it would be a pain but the rebates are electronic and very fast. The only hassle was waiting for the land line to be installed (a few days) followed by waiting for the free dsl modem (a few more days). I kept my comcrap internet until the day that my dsl was running. This is FW after all, so its worth it in the end.
WTF is up with rickfmdj giving me red? Geeze some people...

It is a good plan but the problem with your plan is that ppl may have to wait for more than the 1 week for the rebates to arrive. Personally it has been more than 6 weeks since I signed up and haven't received the rebate yet.
And the phone charges are typically higher than the $20 you have quoted.

I know this deal isn’t for everyone looking for cheap internet. Its is intended for people that are comcrap customers and are consistently denied promotional rates and are stuck on crazy overpriced high speed internet plans (as worded in the thread title). Obviously ymmv...

this may be a stupid question for most, but what is dry loop? i do not need a land line phone but hate comcrap, so a little bit of work and even waiting will make me switch to a comparable speed service even at same price.

It's just a regular copper wire land line connecting the NID from your house to the central office's switch, i.e. your local loop.

As dspw said, dry loop refers to dsl without a land line. ATT calls it DSL Direct (ie… direct pro, direct elite, etc) and charges $10 extra (but no taxes). I personally went with the land line initially so that I could get the free wireless gateway (very nice unit) and extra rebates. I also had no idea if the phone lines in my 30-year old home were wired properly so I used the land line dial tone to troubleshoot. Now that I’m confident my wiring is good and I have rebates in hand I’ll probably drop the land line and go with DSL direct unless I can get the 50% off elite promotion they have going (need to call later).

wet loop = phone line with dial tone dry loop = phone line with no dial tone

Agree...it's a good deal if you want to get away from comcrap. I was just pointing out some of the gotchas...

Maybe it's only available in certain areas, I don't know (partially makes up for the higher price of the plans in former BellSouth areas...):
I was able to get the free DSL modem by scheduling service and calling back to cancel. They offered it to keep me.

Why red? Going though Fat Wallet I was offered the $20 Cash Back, but then at AT&T the lowest phone plan is $33/month with a $65! Installation fee...and after going though the process it is apparent that the offered "free installation" does not materialize. Yes if I call AT&T I lose the $20 Cash Back, get offered a $24 phone plan, but again no free installation. I guess YMMV and MA is not the state to live in. Darn I despise the turtlish Crapcast.

What's your experience with Comcast installation fee? I was told $49.95 installation fee when trying to set up my HSI with Comcast. Plus they do not allow self-installation.

unfortunately I don't think you can avoid installation fee. $50 sounds a little high. Make sure they are not charging you for anything more than the bare minimum of installation. Set up the rest of your home network yourself, I think they charge more if they set up more than one computer for you. Ask them about it.
What is people's experience with getting Comcast to lower your bill when you get all 3 services from them? I'm stuck with $150+ bill a month. I called and they said they could only give me a $10/month discount, I was hoping to get the promotional rate ($99) back. I haven't been on the promotional rate for 8 months.

Plus they do not allow self-installation.I've always done the self-install option with Comcast. You don't even need to buy their self-install kit (tell them you already have one) as it only contains a splitter, a coaxial cable, a CD, and a small booklet. You don't need the splitter if you have a dedicated cable outlet for your cable modem. You probably already have an extra coaxial cable lying around in the house. If you've installed Comcast before, you've learned that you don't really need the CD (and some people don't even like to install whatever the CD contains whether from the physical CD or from the set of files that you can download, basically the same as the CD contents).
Once you connect the cable modem to your outlet, all that you need to do is to call to register your modem where they'll ask you for the MAC address of the modem. They'll then run a test from their side and, if everything goes well, they'll register your modem and you should have connection to the net.
There are quite a few info on how to do self-installation that you can search through Google, including the phone # to call.
If you haven't set Comcast cable up before, ask a friend who's done it before and it'll require that person only a few minutes. I've not heard of $49.95 installation as I thought it's much higher than that. I hope they're not starting to charge people for calling in to register their modem. The last time I called them to register my modem was about 3 months ago and I didn't get charged.

If you don't have cable TV Comcast is not going to allow a self install. If you have limited cable its possible they may require a service call because of the signal traps. I recently helped a neighbor with the self install and she already had the phone and TV package. They actually encouraged her to do the self install to save on the service call.
